Commercial Aquaponics: Fish & Plants in Recirculating Systems
1. Commercial Aquaponics
A Brief Overview Aquaponics is
the combined culture of fish and plants in
re-circulating systems. Nutrients, which are
excreted directly by the fish or generated by
the microbial breakdown of organic wastes,
are absorbed by plants cultured
hydroponically (without soil). Fish feed
provides most of the nutrients required for
plant growth. Aquaponics has several
advantages over other re-circulating
aquaculture systems and hydroponic
systems that use inorganic nutrient
solutions
Advantage of Aquaponics Fish provide most nutrients required by plants.
Plants use nutrients to produce a valuable by-product . Hydroponic component serves as a
biofilter. Hydroponic plants extend water use and reduce discharge to the environment.
Integrated systems require less water quality monitoring than individual systems. Profit
potential increased due to free nutrients for plants, lower water requirement, elimination of
separate biofilter, less water quality monitoring and shared costs for operation and
infrastructure.
2. Unique Features of
GROW Aquaponics System Design
1. Using of natural stream water for rearing of fish -Creates a better habitat for fish in terms of clean
water and ample dissolved oxygen & helps to naturally balance the PH level.
2. Adaptation to existing terrain-Usage of gravity for re circulation of water whole system works with a
single pump , thus conserving energy.
3. Multi level growing systems-Increase the area of cultivation thus achieving higher yield per sft’
Multiple fish rearing tanks below the grow systems in addition to the natural pond, thereby
increasing rearing capacity and variety of fish.
4. Usage of Aquaponic nutrient rich water for soilless hydroponic cultivation- Generates free
hydroponic nutrients , thus reduces the dependency and expenditure on chemical nutrients
5. Self sustainable recycle chain system-Conversion of solid waste into bio gas vermi compost makes
the system recyclable with zero wastage. Avoids release of toxins to the environment. Biogas
heaters instead of electrical thermostats for maintaining water temperature. Use of micro hydro
energy for pumping system instead of electricity.(work in progress)

13. Growth plans
• Urban setups for individual terraces and balconies, with vegetables/herbs &
ornamental (aquarium) /table (edible) fish; start locally around Bangalore, later
spread to all over India with easy DIY systems.
•Setups with decorative aquarium and green walls for corporate office interiors
•Commercial setups with training and hobby classes for large corporate office
terraces, which are usually empty. This will have a double attraction to the
employees; they can carry fresh vegetables home and also have a group activity
around this for stress relief.
•Commercial self sustainable setups for large farmlands
•Workshops and training programs
