1. 1. The "Art" of Blackfacing By: Sasha Strother Professor William Hart MCM 510 11/14/09
 2. 2. What is Blackfacing?

"Blackfacing" is a tactic used in media to portray a certain culture (African Americans) in a disrespectful manner by using stereotypical acts and painting the face black to entertain.

The individuals who act the part are not normally of the culture portrayed.

 3. 3. Characteristics

There is a list of characteristics people of the African decent are claimed to have. Some of them include:

continuous conflict, poor speech, dishonesty, criminal behavior and having simple minds.

 4. 4. Repetition of Time

Although there was a rise in Black culture for a short period of time (during the 70's), there was repetition in the late 70's, early 80's where time did repeat itself. It was a era in entertainment coined the phrase "Blaxploitation."

 5. 5. Examples

Some examples that are movies that exploit the African/ African American culture:

The Wedding of a Coon (1905)

A Birth of a Nation (1915)

Foxy Brown (1974)

Transformers (2009)

 6. 6. The Truth

The truth about "Blackfacing" and "Blaxploitation" is that although we look at the matter as a thing of the past, it is truly a matter of today. As long as the audience continues to watch and producers continue to create without the audience in mind, this stereotype will never cease.
