toothbrush
IoT products include …
sarwan@NIELIT Chandigarh5
 smart socks (to measure running form)
 connected water bottles (to gather water-
consumption data.)
 Internet-connected e-cigarette
 First electric-toothbrush by P&G-Oral in 1963
now “World's First Available Interactive
Electric Toothbrush”
 sonic toothbrush by Kolibree, includes nine
motion sensors and an algorithm designed by
five mathematicians to identify which
quadrant of the mouth a user is brushing.
Reinvent brushing
IoT products include …
sarwan@NIELIT Chandigarh6
 The Mimo baby monitor is a body suit
that monitors a baby's body
temperature, motion, and breathing
patterns
 Sleep monitors
 Leaf sensors- by NASA
 e-textile, BlendFix sensor electrode
technology or simply sensor-equipped
shirt that monitors a patient's vital signs
and movement,
Reebok

“ The Internet of Things is the network of
physical objects that contain embedded
technology to communicate and sense or
interact with their internal states or the
external environment.” - Gartner

sarwan@NIELIT Chandigarh
Sensors & Actuators
13
 We are giving our world digital nervous system. Location
data using GPS sensors. Eyes and ears using cameras and
microphones, along with sensory organs that can measure
everything from temperature to pressure changes.
sarwan@NIELIT Chandigarh
Sensors & Actuators
14
Sensors for collecting the
information:
 Humidity sensor
 Level/tilt sensor
 Pressure sensor
 Temperature sensor
 Motion Sensors
 Proximity Sensors
 Optical Sensors
 Acceleration sensors
 Load sensors
 Vibration sensors
 Chemical sensors
 Flow sensors
Actuators:
• Light emitting Diodes
[LED]
• Relays
• Motors
• Linear actuators
• Lasers
• Solenoids
• Speakers
• LCD or Plasma displays

Connectivity

Connectivity
16
The embedded systems can use a range
of connectivity to connect with other
devices or the internet.
 Some examples are as below:
.
WiFi
Bluetooth
RFID
ZIGBEE
NFC
.
Ethernet
LTE
3G
GSM
CDMA
sarwan@NIELIT Chandigarh
People and Process
17
The information transmitted via the chose
connectivity can be used by people and
processes to take action or re-transmit the info
to a different embedded system to be used to
perform an action using actuators, below are
some examples:
 A gas leak/ smoke is detected by a chemical
sensor and the info is transmitted to a monitoring
center. Help is dispatched immediately and the
affected are informed
sarwan@NIELIT Chandigarh
People and Process
18
 A home security system detects intrusion, a call
is placed to the authorities and owners alerted.
Help dispatched
 Load sensor can initiate a communication to the
supplier to send more stock enabling the supply
chain management automation
 Car can send the diagnostics to the service
center and the service center schedules a repair.
 Your IoT thermostat sends the information to the
cloud which can then be analysed by to manage
your energy expenditure.

Draft IoT policy DeitY, Govt. of
India
sarwan@NIELIT Chandigarh32
 To create an IoT industry in India of USD
15 billion by 2020. It has been assumed
that India would have a share of 5-6% of
global IoT industry.
 To undertake capacity development
(Human & Technology) for IoT specific skill-
sets for domestic and international
markets.
 To undertake Research & development for
all the assisting technologies.
 To develop IoT products specific to Indian
needs in all possible domains.
Smart cities
sarwan@NIELIT Chandigarh33
 Rs. 7,060 crores kept for 100 smart
cities
to undertake
• Smart parking. • Intelligent transport
system.
• Tele-care. • Woman Safety • Smart
grids.
• Smart urban lighting. • Waste
management.
• Smart city maintenance. • Digital-
signage.
