• Start with your student Photo,
outline key areas and features
that you will be working with
(Eyes, nose, mouth hair etc)
• This doesn’t need to be perfect. It
is just a guide for your painting.

• Start adding paint to your features on your photo. Keep it
simple and limit the amount of colours you use just like
Lichtenstein! (I recommend maximum 3 plus black and white).
• Make sure to be bold in your colour and add some heavier
brush strokes like Van Gogh.
• Don’t worry about going over the lines as it will be given a
strong black outline and trimmed for the final work. Once
finished, set it aside to dry.

• Start cutting out your newspaper pieces. These need to be cut, NOT torn.
• Avoid pictures, we want to keep a monochrome (black and white) background.
• Use headlines and varying text sizes to make it more dynamic.

5.
• Once you think you have enough, start
glueing them onto your black A3 sheet in
every direction.
• It needs to be completely covered. Make
sure there are no gaps left! Overlapping is a
great Idea!
• Make sure they are glued down well enough
so the edges don’t lift up.

6.
• Start cutting out your painted
portrait. Some finer features
may need to be added with a
marker later eg. nose and eye
lashes.
• Glue your cut out pieces onto
your newspaper sheet and add in
the finer details, first with pencil
then with a black marker. Add
any extra features and finishing
touches to give your work that
cutting edge!
