3. First Aviation in the History
On 17 December 1903, Orville Wright made the world's first
powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine, near Kitty Hawk, North
Carolina (Franklin, 1980). The flight lasted 47 seconds and covered
2000 feet. As far as we know, there was no food or drink on board
this historic flight. However, it was not long...in 1919 the first food
and drink were served on board.
In 1940-1950 the catering company established as a supplier.

10. Airline Catering
Catering includes the offloading of unused food and drink from the aircraft, and
the loading of fresh food and drink for passengers and crew.
Airline meals are typically delivered in Airline service food trolleys or food cart.
Meals are prepared mostly on the ground in order to minimize the amount of
preparation (apart from chilling or reheating) required in the air.
While some airlines provide their own catering, others have either owned catering
companies in the past and divested themselves of the companies, or
have outsourced their catering to third-party companies.
Airline catering sources include the following companies in Thailand as example

12. Airline Catering
An airline meal, airline food, or in-flight meal is a meal served to passengers on

specialist airline catering services and normally served to passengers using
an airline service trolley or food cart.
These meals vary widely in quality and quantity across different depend on
airline companies and classes of travel. They range from a simple snack or
beverage in short-haul economy class to a seven-course gourmet meal in a first
class long-haul flight.
The types of food offered also vary widely from country to country, and often
incorporate elements of local cuisine, sometimes both from the origin and
destination countries.

Meal Ordering Device (MOD)
Cabin crew recruitment portal Paddle Your Own Kanoo reports that the MOD
smartphones connect to a plug-and-play WiFi router which is separate from the
onboard connectivity system that passengers use.
All the smartphones (Samsung Galaxy A7) are synced to communicate with one
another for the duration of the flight, don’t have a SIM card, and have been
blocked from running any applications apart from the bespoke Meal Ordering
app.
“The orders are taken on a hand held device and are instantly reflected on a
tablet in the galley. Each order is then prepared immediately making service
faster, more efficient and more personal,” said Terry Daly, Divisional Senior Vice
President, Service Delivery at Emirates.

The system is currently being trialed on three routes – Dubai-Melbourne-
Auckland, Dubai-Paris and Dubai–Mauritius – and will be rolled out across
Emirates' Airbus A380 fleet by the end of April, with the Boeing 777s following
by the end of May.
What Emirates refers to as 'Meal Ordering Devices' are Samsung Galaxy A7
smartphones, locked down so that they boot straight into a bespoke app built
for Emirates on which the business class cabin crew take meal and drink orders.
42. Emirates is rolling out a new
electronic Meal Ordering Device for
Business Class passengers but
teething problems are causing a
headache for Cabin Crew.
43. Each order is instantly beamed back
via WiFi – across a separate WiFi
network to that used by passengers –
to a tablet located in the galley so that
the order can be immediately
prepared.
All Business Class cabin crew have
been issued a Samsung Galaxy A7
smartphone. The phones have been
set up as what the airline calls a ‘Meal
Ordering Device’ with a bespoke app
designed for the airline.

Daly, Emirates' Divisional Senior Vice
President for Service Delivery.
