Walmart is a large retail corporation founded in 1962 that has grown to operate over 11,000 stores globally. It offers a variety of products including groceries, electronics, clothing, and more. Walmart has various store formats including discount stores, supercenters, and neighborhood markets. It aims to save people money so they can live better. While highly successful, Walmart also faces some criticism around its business practices.

• 1962: Walmart was founded by Sam Walton in Arkansas, USA
• 1967: The Walton family owned 24 stores, ringing up 12.7m USD in sales
• 1969: The company officially incorporated as Wal-Mart Stores, Incorporation
• 1970: Walmart becomes a publicly traded company. The first stock was sold at $16.50
per share.
• 1972: Walmart was listed on the New York Stock Exchange

save money on merchandise purchased in bulk.
• Offers bulk displays of name-brand merchandise, some soft goods and
institutional size grocery items.
• Most clubs have fresh food departments such as bakery, meat and produce
sections.

• Walmart Supercenters offer a one-
stop shopping experience by
combining a grocery store with
fresh produce, bakery, deli and dairy

and nail salons, restaurants, or
vision centers.

• Walmart Neighborhood Markets were designed in 1998 as a smaller-footprint
option for communities in need of a pharmacy, affordable groceries and
merchandise.
• Walmart Neighborhood Markets offer fresh produce, meat and dairy products,
bakery and deli items, household supplies, health and beauty aids and a
pharmacy.

• Walmart Money Order Service: It is essentially a prepaid check or bank
certificate. To get a money order, you pay the amount of the money order to the
issuer, plus a small fee. Then you’ll be issued the money order, which will typically
include the name of both the recipient and the issuer.
• Walmart Cellular Service Plan: Choose from a wide variety of smartphones or
keep his/her own phone and buy a compatible SIM Activation Kit. With this
service, subscribers enjoy the lowest-priced, unlimited plans and the most 4G LTE
data. It's powered by T-Mobile's nationwide network, so you can enjoy unlimited

• Walmart Photo Processing Plan: This service allows customers to upload their
pictures (photos, wall art, designs, posters, and so forth) to their website using
the Walmart app for a quick, easy way to get it printed and also deliver to them.

international market is dynamic.
• Whist Walmart operates in some
countries as a fully owned entity, they

• In fiscal year 2012, Walmart registered approximately $444 billion in sales, which
is $20 billion more than Austria's GDP. If Walmart were a country, it would be the
26th largest economy in the world.
• Walmart top selling item in 2014 was banana.
• Walmart generated $514.4 billion in revenue in the fiscal year ended Jan. 31,
2019, up from $500.3 billion the previous year. In addition, e-commerce sales
grew 40%.
• In the first quarter of 2019, Walmart sales increased by 37% year-over-year.
Revenue rose 1% to $123.9 billion.
• Walmart had 2.2 million employees as on April 25, 2019.
• 275 million customers shop at Walmart every week (last updated: April 24, 2019)

24. Criticism of Walmart
• Predatory Pricing:
Walmart has been accused of selling merchandise at low costs that competitors
have tried to sue it for intentionally selling product at low cost in order to drive
competitors out of the market.
• Employee and Labour Relations:
With about 2.2 million employee worldwide, Walmart has faced a number of
lawsuits and issues ranging from low wages, poor working conditions, inadequate
health care and so forth.

• Walmart must improve on it’s international expansion in emerging economic
countries.
• Walmart must put in greater effort to be the leading pioneer for groceries
retailing store in the world.
• Their mode of entry in countries (for example, the Asian countries) where they
cherish their local products/services should be a joint venture(preferably a local
company)
• Walmart needs to improve on the condition of services of their workers.
