Handspun vs. Machine Spun Wool in Oriental Rugs

  1. 1. HANDSPUN VS. MACHINE- SPUN WOOL IN ORIENTAL RUGS SAMAD Rugs
  2. 2. About Spinning Wool  Spinning is the process of twisting together strands of wool to make yarn.  The technique of hand-spinning wool was used for thousands of years until the invention of machines made for the purpose of spinning wool.  By World War II, almost all rug-making wool was machine-spun.  In the mid-1980s, handspun wool started to come back into fashion.
  3. 3. Handspun Wool  When wool is spun by hand, there are irregularities in the tension of the twists.  Some areas are spun more tightly, while others are looser.  Because of this, when the yarn is soaked in dye, the colors are not uniform.  Less dye is absorbed in areas that are tightly spun.  More dye is absorbed in areas that are loosely spun.
  4. 4. Handspun Wool  The irregularities in the wool also make the surface of the rug slightly uneven.  The irregular textures and colors give the oriental rug a very handmade look.
  5. 5. Machine-Spun Wool  Because the wool is spun by a machine, the tension is uniform.  This also means the colors are more uniform because the dye is absorbed evenly.  A rug made with machine-spun wool will have a very even looking surface.
  6. 6. Which is Better?  Many experts prefer the look of handspun wool.  However, there is no right answer. It all depends on personal preference.  Some people prefer the character and personality that comes with the irregularities of handspun wool.  Others prefer the uniformity of machine-spun wool.
