Born in Teramo, Italy on June 25th 1975
In the academic year 1993/94 graduated from Classical Studies High School with degrees 60/60 (GPA 4.0).
In the academic year 2001/02 graduated as Medical Doctor at University of Bologna School of Medicine with grades
110/110 Magna Cum Laude, presenting an experimental thesis on “Current treatment of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ of the
Breast”, study conducted in the 1st
Department of Surgery of S. Orsola Malpighi University Hospital, in cooperation with
the Department of the Public Health and Biostatistics of the Bologna Local Health District.
In the academic year 2002/03 he was admitted in the Postgraduate School of General Surgery at University of Bologna
School of Medicine. He completed his residency and graduated as specialist surgeon with grades 70/70 Magna Cum
Laude on November 6th
2008, after being allocated in his final year in the Emergency and Trauma Surgery Unit - Trauma
Center (Head Dr. F. Baldoni) of Maggiore Hospital in Bologna, having had training experience in the previous years in the
departments of General and Colorectal Surgery, Breast Surgery, Emergency Surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery
and Transplant Unit of S. Orsola Malpighi University Hospital. After having attended in November and December 2008 as
Specialist Surgeon in the Emergency and Trauma Surgery Unit - Trauma Center (Head Dr. F. Baldoni) of Maggiore
Hospital, in January 2009 he was selected in a public competition (4th
classified) and got a position as
Attending/Consultant in the Emergency Department/Accident and Emergency Medicine/Trauma Casualty of Maggiore
Hospital in Bologna, Italy. In June 2009 has been selected (5th
classified out of 42 surgeons) and invited for a position as
Consultant Surgeon by the Bologna Local Public Health District. From August 2009 to February 2010 he is Clinical
Fellow in Upper GI Surgery at Frenchay Hospital, North Bristol NHS, UK (selected for the Clinical Fellowship Post). From
January 2010 is appointed as substantive consultant surgeon in the Emergency and Trauma Surgery Unit of Maggiore
Hospital – Bologna Local Health District. From November 2010 he is also substantive Consultant General Surgeon in the
General, Emergency and HBP Surgery of the Department of Surgery directed by Prof. Elio Jovine. He is one of the 5 Chief
Consultant s of the Department, performing elective General Surgery Procedures and being Team Leader Consultant in
Acute Care and Trauma Surgery, on call rota for emergencies 1:5.
Since July 2014 he has the responsability of “Clinical Head for Laparoscopy in Trauma Surgery” within the Trauma
Surgery Unit (Head Dr G. Tugnoli), Department of Emergency, Trauma Center – Maggiore Hospital of Bologna.
Since November 2014 he is Vice-Chair of the Trauma Surgery Unit, Department of Emergency, Trauma Center – Maggiore
Hospital of Bologna.
He authored more than 550 scientific papers published in national and international journals, in more than 350 as a
first author. He published more than 115 papers in peer reviewed journals with Impact Factor (Overall IF more than 450),
more than 80 as a first author. He has been first author or corresponding co-author of papers and clinical cases
published by “The Lancet” as well as by New England Journal of Medicine. In 2008 he has been invited as
reviewer/referee for the New England Journal of Medicine. He is external clinical reviewer for The Lancet from 2010 and
for Annals of Surgery since 2013. In 2009-11 he has been invited as a referee for the British Journal of Surgery (45
times) performing 26 reviews, as well as for Annals of Internal Medicine (2 Times), British Medical Journal (5 times), the
World Journal of Emergency Surgery (6 times), BMJ Case Reports (32 times, performed 15 reviews), BMJ Open (2 times),
Supportive Care in Cancer (3 times), BMC Surgery, Saudi Medical Journal (2 times), Journal of Nuclear Medicine and
Radiation Therapy, Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology, Frontiers of Medicine and African Health Sciences and other
journal. He is the first and corresponding author of a GI Snapshot about Small Bowel Obstruction from Adhesions,
recently published on GUT as well as of a Learning Forum on diagnosis and Management of Bowel Obstruction and
Chronic Constipation published by PLoS Medicine. He has also published many research paper and other type of articles
about GI Surgery and GI diseases, Laparoscopy, Emergency and Trauma Surgery, as well as Surgical Oncology, on
journals as prestigious as BMJ, CMAJ, Annals of Surgery, Journal of American college of Surgery, British Journal of
Surgery, Archives of Surgery, BMC Gastroenterology. He attended as a delegate, invited speaker, moderator, discussant
or instructor faculty member to more than 180 scientific conferences, meetings and courses, in Italy and around the
world; in particular he attended as speaker and presenting author in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 at the 95th

as President of the Session of the World Journal Emergency Surgery at the 2012 World Trauma Congress in Rio de
Janeiro; he has also been invited as an expert by UNIRIO to give a Lecture on the Use and Techniques of Laparoscopic
Approach for Acute Perforated Diverticulitis. In November 2013 he has been invited speaker to present its pioneering
experience on Emergency Laparoscopic Surgery for Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at the Acute Surgical Care
Conference in Newcastle, Australia organized by University of Newcastle/John Hunter Hospital and Hunter Surgical
Society. In 2014 he is invited speaker at the International Trauma and Emergency Surgery week organized in Alicante,
Spain about topics such as Laparoscopic colorectal emergencies and the Treatment of Entero-atmospheric fistula. In
October 2014 has authored and presented at the 100th
American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in San
Francisco, three surgical videos of personal laparoscopic procedures in the field Emergency Laparoscopic Colorectal
Surgery (SILS colectomy for acute diverticulitis) and Laparoscopic procedures for Trauma (Laparoscopic Splenectomy for
penetrating Abdominal Trauma and Lap repair of diaphragmatic injuries).
He has been first author or co-author of several chapters and contributions in scientific books and manuals, in Italian
and English.
He is also currently the leading Editor of two Trauma Surgery book published by Springer publisher, which includes
between the authors, surgeons such Ernest Moore, Demetrios Demetriades, George Velmahos, Andrew Peitzman, Lena
Napolitano, Ian Civil, Ari Leppaniemi and many others Trauma Surgeons worldwide.
He is member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Open Breast Cancer Journal as well as of the Journal of Nuclear
Medicine and Radiation Therapy. Since 2011 he is also Member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Emergency
Surgery and of the Board of the Directors of the World Society of Emergency Surgery. From 2014 he is Section Editor of
the WJES. Since 2012 he has been invited to join as Academic Editor the Editorial Board of the British Journal of
Medicine and Medical Research and Senior Editor of Chronicles of Surgery. From December 2014 he is Associate Editor
of BMC Surgery and also Editorial Board member of the journal Current Trauma Reports (Springer). From 2015 he is
Editorial Board member of BMJ Case Reports and of the prestigious British Journal of Surgery.
He is also member of the Editorial Board of ISRN Emergency Medicine and from March 2012 is Editor-in-Chief of the
Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy. From 2012 he’s also been promoted to be Chief Editor of BJMMR.
At the 106th
National Congress of the Italian Society of Surgery, in Rome 2004, he co-authored the two best
presentations awarded with prizes from the society on the topics: “Surgery and HIV” and “Non-neoplastic intestinal
obstruction”.
At the International Surgical Week 2007 – 42nd
World Congress of Surgery held in Montreal August 2007, he was the
presenting author of the study “Multicenter prospective randomized trial on water-soluble contrast medium
(Gastrografin®) use in intestinal small bowel obstruction caused by adherences” presented in the ISS/SIC Lloyd M.
Nyhus Prize Session (“The 12 best ISS/SIC free papers in Gastrointestinal Surgery”) and awarded with the 2nd
prize
given to the 6 best presentations by a jury of internationally recognized experts.
In 2010 American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in Washington his two oral free paper on Trauma Surgery have
been evaluated as the best presentations of their sessions. He has also been the winner of the 2010 “Mazzeo” Prize for
the best scientific paper and the best Italian Young Surgeon, awarded by the Italian Society for Digestive Diseases.
In the National Congress 2011 of Italian Society of Young Surgeons in Naples he has been awarded with “Prof. Crucitti
prize”, given to the best Italian Young Surgeons under 40 of the year 2011.
He has been involved as co-investigator or principal investigator in more than 30 research projects and international
clinical trials, mostly multicenter prospective randomized. He is Principal Investigator of Bologna center for the
international multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial, coordinated by the Dutch Diverticular Diseases Group, “The
Ladies Trial” investigating the laparoscopic treatment of perforated diverticulitis and being actively involved as primary
operating surgeon. He is also Principal Investigator in the center of Bologna for the international multicenter
Randomized Controlled Trial, coordinated by University of Helsinki, Laparoscopic versus open adhesiolysis for small
bowel obstruction (NCT01867528) and being actively involved as primary operating surgeon.
Since 2010 has been nominated by the University of Bologna as Tutor/Evaluating Professor in the discipline General
Surgery in the Clinical Skills (Clinical Practice) Hospital session of the Medical Graduates for National Medical
Licensing Exam.
He has described and published in well regarded scientific journal or surgery books, several original or innovative
surgical techniques in both open and laparoscopic surgery (Techniques for liver packing, for trauma splenectomy,
duodenal damage control and 4-tubes ostomy in case of caustic injuries, techniques for Entero-Atmospheric fistulas
isolation in Open Abdomen, low cost laparoscopic appendectomy, low cost SILS with surgical glove for appendectomy
and other colorectal urgent diseases, laparoscopy for all types of emergency surgery procedures and for colorectal
emergencies) and several clinical algorithms published within scientific articles (liver trauma, spleen trauma, hiatus
hernias).
He has performed to date more than 3000 major surgical procedures; out of them more than 1800 were
urgent/emergency procedures and more than 490 laparoscopic cases. He performed more than 1300 procedures as
first operator of all types of surgery, and more than 340 laparoscopic cases as first operator. In emergency laparoscopy
setting he has performed as first operator any type of emergency surgery procedure with laparoscopic technique
(complicated/perforated acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, lap repair of gastroduodenal perforations,
laparoscopic removal of intra-gastric or intestinal foreign bodies, laparoscopic gastroenteronastomoses and lap
GastroJJ, laparoscopy for adhesive small bowel obstruction and laparoscopic adhesiolysis, laparoscopic lavage for
purulent perforated diverticulitis, laparoscopic Hartmann’s procedures and Laparoscopic Colonic resections with
primary anastomosis for perforated diverticulitis, laparoscopy for diffuse peritonitis, laparoscopic reduction and repair
in strangulated incisional hernia, laparoscopic reduction and repair of strangulated PEH, laparoscopic colonic resection
with intracorporeal anastomosis or lap Hartmann’s for obstructing colon carcinoma). He ha also performed as first
operator several laparoscopic procedures for Abdominal Trauma in hemodynamically stable patients such as
laparoscopic splenectomy, drainage of pancreatic hematoma and hemostasis of pancreatic laceration, laparoscopic
repair of traumatic diaphragmatic injuries, lap repair of traumatic small bowel lacerations. He has performed as well
more than 1100 minor surgical procedures in outpatient or inpatient setting.
Since 2011 he has founded and organized an Hands On Course for young Surgeons, ICU doctors, A&E doctors, General
Doctors and nurses, about techniques of insertion and management of the thoracic drains in Emergency and Trauma
setting. He is actually the Director of this Course, now held until his 3rd edition and invited in several italian hospitals
(Rome, Naples and Palermo). He has also initiated and directed two Hands On Courses on Trauma Surgery and
Emergency Laparoscopy for the Italian Society of Young Surgeons, held in Naples 2011 at the National Annual
Conference of the Italian Society of Young Surgeons.
Since 2011 he is Instructor, member of the Faculty of the Trauma Surgery and Hands On Course, official course of the
Italian Society of Surgeons for Specialist Surgeons, initiated by the Trauma Team of Maggiore Hospital, with two editions
held annually.
Since 2014 (DTSC Edition held in Alicante June 5-6th
) he has been involved within the Spanish Faculty of Instructors
(Director Dr. Fernando Turegano) of DSTC (Definitive Surgical Trauma Care course), under the auspices of IATSIC
(International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care).
He was a visiting doctor for short periods in several universities and hospitals in Italy and overseas, in France, Poland,
United States, Mexico, South Africa.
In 2006 he spent 4 months in the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami,
U.S.A.; he attended the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Division of General
Surgery/Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Colo-Rectal Surgery and Surgical ICU in the Jackson Memorial Hospital as
well as the Division of Trauma Surgery and Trauma ICU of Ryder Trauma Center.
He has been involved in research projects of UM in the fields of Trauma and Surgical Oncology.
In 2007 he spent 5 months, with the authorization of the University of Bologna and the Italian Ministry of Health, in the
University of Kwazulu Natal, Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban, South Africa, with the role of Supernumerary
Surgical Registrar and registered as Medical Practitioner to the Health Professions Council of South Africa. As
supernumerary Registrar, he attended and performed On Call duties and 80 procedures of Emergency and Trauma
Surgery in Addington Hospital and in the Trauma Center of Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. In South Africa he has
achieved the BLS, ACLS and ATLS certification. In 2009 he successfully qualified as ALS Advanced Life Support Provider
(European Resuscitation Council).
He is active member of several scientific surgical societies in Italy (Italian Society of Surgeons, Italian Society of Young
Surgeons) and overseas (International Society of Surgery, Trauma Society of South Africa). He is member of the Executive
Committee, National Secretariat and Editorial Staff of the Italian Society of Young Surgeons. From 2011 he is member of
the board of Directors of the Italian Society of Young Surgeons,
Since 2015 has been accepted as Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, approved by the Board of Regents of the
American College of Surgeons and privileged to use the FACS designation. He has also been accepted as a Fellow by the
prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England and privileged to use the FRCS designation.
Since 2003 he is member of the Medical Board of the Province of Bologna (n. 14708); he was registered also to the
Health Profession Council of South Africa (MP0641758). In 2007 he completed the verification of credentials and
registration to the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates/International Credentials Services
(ECFMG/EICS® number E176503). Since 2009 he is registered as Specialist in General Surgery to the English General
Medical Council, in the Specialist Register (Ref. N. 7039978), for any work grade, including Consultant Surgeon.
He speaks fluently English, Spanish and French.
His main fields of interest are currently Gastrointestinal Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Emergency Surgery either open or
laparoscopic, Trauma, Abdominal and Laparoscopic Surgery, Surgical Oncology and Breast Surgery.

In the academic year 2001/02 graduated as Medical Doctor at University of Bologna School of Medicine with grades 110/110 Magna Cum Laude, presenting an experimental thesis on “Current treatment of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ of the Breast”, study conducted in the 1st Department of Surgery of S. Orsola Malpighi University Hospital, in cooperation with the Department of the Public Health and Biostatistics of the Bologna Local Health District. In the academic year 2002/03 he was admitted in the Postgraduate School of General Surgery at University of Bologna School of Medicine. He completed his residency and graduated as specialist surgeon with grades 70/70 Magna Cum Laude on November 6th 2008, after being allocated in his final year in the Emergency and Trauma Surgery Unit - Trauma Center (Head Dr. F. Baldoni) of Maggiore Hospital in Bologna, having had training experience in the previous years in the departments of General and Colorectal Surgery, Breast Surgery, Emergency Surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery and Transplant Unit of S. Orsola Malpighi University Hospital. After having attended in November and December 2008 as Specialist Surgeon in the Emergency and Trauma Surgery Unit - Trauma Center (Head Dr. F. Baldoni) of Maggiore Hospital, in January 2009 he was selected in a public competition (4th classified) and got a position as Attending/Consultant in the Emergency Department/Accident and Emergency Medicine/Trauma Casualty of Maggiore Hospital in Bologna, Italy. In June 2009 has been selected (5th classified out of 42 surgeons) and invited for a position as Consultant Surgeon by the Bologna Local Public Health District. From August 2009 to February 2010 he is Clinical Fellow in Upper GI Surgery at Frenchay Hospital, North Bristol NHS, UK (selected for the Clinical Fellowship Post). From January 2010 is appointed as substantive consultant surgeon in the Emergency and Trauma Surgery Unit of Maggiore Hospital – Bologna Local Health District. From November 2010 he is also substantive Consultant General Surgeon in the General, Emergency and HBP Surgery of the Department of Surgery directed by Prof. Elio Jovine. He is one of the 5 Chief Consultant s of the Department, performing elective General Surgery Procedures and being Team Leader Consultant in Acute Care and Trauma Surgery, on call rota for emergencies 1:5. Since July 2014 he has the responsability of “Clinical Head for Laparoscopy in Trauma Surgery” within the Trauma Surgery Unit (Head Dr G. Tugnoli), Department of Emergency, Trauma Center – Maggiore Hospital of Bologna. Since November 2014 he is Vice-Chair of the Trauma Surgery Unit, Department of Emergency, Trauma Center – Maggiore Hospital of Bologna. He authored more than 550 scientific papers published in national and international journals, in more than 350 as a first author. He published more than 115 papers in peer reviewed journals with Impact Factor (Overall IF more than 450), more than 80 as a first author. He has been first author or corresponding co-author of papers and clinical cases published by “The Lancet” as well as by New England Journal of Medicine. In 2008 he has been invited as reviewer/referee for the New England Journal of Medicine. He is external clinical reviewer for The Lancet from 2010 and for Annals of Surgery since 2013. In 2009-11 he has been invited as a referee for the British Journal of Surgery (45 times) performing 26 reviews, as well as for Annals of Internal Medicine (2 Times), British Medical Journal (5 times), the World Journal of Emergency Surgery (6 times), BMJ Case Reports (32 times, performed 15 reviews), BMJ Open (2 times), Supportive Care in Cancer (3 times), BMC Surgery, Saudi Medical Journal (2 times), Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy, Saudi Journal of Gastroenterology, Frontiers of Medicine and African Health Sciences and other journal. He is the first and corresponding author of a GI Snapshot about Small Bowel Obstruction from Adhesions, recently published on GUT as well as of a Learning Forum on diagnosis and Management of Bowel Obstruction and Chronic Constipation published by PLoS Medicine. He has also published many research paper and other type of articles about GI Surgery and GI diseases, Laparoscopy, Emergency and Trauma Surgery, as well as Surgical Oncology, on journals as prestigious as BMJ, CMAJ, Annals of Surgery, Journal of American college of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery, Archives of Surgery, BMC Gastroenterology. He attended as a delegate, invited speaker, moderator, discussant or instructor faculty member to more than 180 scientific conferences, meetings and courses, in Italy and around the world; in particular he attended as speaker and presenting author in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 at the 95th , 96th , 97th , 98th , 99th Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons as well as at the 22nd Annual Scientific Assembly of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, as a speaker in 2005 and 2007 to the International Surgical Week – World Congress of Surgery of the International Society of Surgery, in 2004 and 2008 to the congress of the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery, in 2004 and 2006 to the 2nd and 3rd Interamerican Breast Cancer Conference, to the 2006 29th San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium and the 2007 60th Society of Surgical Oncology Annual Meeting, and in 2008 at the 67th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He has been as Invited Speaker for the use of Laparoscopy in Emergency Surgery and Acute Appendicitis as well as President of the Session of the World Journal Emergency Surgery at the 2012 World Trauma Congress in Rio de Janeiro; he has also been invited as an expert by UNIRIO to give a Lecture on the Use and Techniques of Laparoscopic Approach for Acute Perforated Diverticulitis. In November 2013 he has been invited speaker to present its pioneering
  • 2. experience on Emergency Laparoscopic Surgery for Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at the Acute Surgical Care Conference in Newcastle, Australia organized by University of Newcastle/John Hunter Hospital and Hunter Surgical Society. In 2014 he is invited speaker at the International Trauma and Emergency Surgery week organized in Alicante, Spain about topics such as Laparoscopic colorectal emergencies and the Treatment of Entero-atmospheric fistula. In October 2014 has authored and presented at the 100th American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in San Francisco, three surgical videos of personal laparoscopic procedures in the field Emergency Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery (SILS colectomy for acute diverticulitis) and Laparoscopic procedures for Trauma (Laparoscopic Splenectomy for penetrating Abdominal Trauma and Lap repair of diaphragmatic injuries). He has been first author or co-author of several chapters and contributions in scientific books and manuals, in Italian and English. He is also currently the leading Editor of two Trauma Surgery book published by Springer publisher, which includes between the authors, surgeons such Ernest Moore, Demetrios Demetriades, George Velmahos, Andrew Peitzman, Lena Napolitano, Ian Civil, Ari Leppaniemi and many others Trauma Surgeons worldwide. He is member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Open Breast Cancer Journal as well as of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy. Since 2011 he is also Member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Emergency Surgery and of the Board of the Directors of the World Society of Emergency Surgery. From 2014 he is Section Editor of the WJES. Since 2012 he has been invited to join as Academic Editor the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Medicine and Medical Research and Senior Editor of Chronicles of Surgery. From December 2014 he is Associate Editor of BMC Surgery and also Editorial Board member of the journal Current Trauma Reports (Springer). From 2015 he is Editorial Board member of BMJ Case Reports and of the prestigious British Journal of Surgery. He is also member of the Editorial Board of ISRN Emergency Medicine and from March 2012 is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy. From 2012 he’s also been promoted to be Chief Editor of BJMMR. At the 106th National Congress of the Italian Society of Surgery, in Rome 2004, he co-authored the two best presentations awarded with prizes from the society on the topics: “Surgery and HIV” and “Non-neoplastic intestinal obstruction”. At the International Surgical Week 2007 – 42nd World Congress of Surgery held in Montreal August 2007, he was the presenting author of the study “Multicenter prospective randomized trial on water-soluble contrast medium (Gastrografin®) use in intestinal small bowel obstruction caused by adherences” presented in the ISS/SIC Lloyd M. Nyhus Prize Session (“The 12 best ISS/SIC free papers in Gastrointestinal Surgery”) and awarded with the 2nd prize given to the 6 best presentations by a jury of internationally recognized experts. In 2010 American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in Washington his two oral free paper on Trauma Surgery have been evaluated as the best presentations of their sessions. He has also been the winner of the 2010 “Mazzeo” Prize for the best scientific paper and the best Italian Young Surgeon, awarded by the Italian Society for Digestive Diseases. In the National Congress 2011 of Italian Society of Young Surgeons in Naples he has been awarded with “Prof. Crucitti prize”, given to the best Italian Young Surgeons under 40 of the year 2011. He has been involved as co-investigator or principal investigator in more than 30 research projects and international clinical trials, mostly multicenter prospective randomized. He is Principal Investigator of Bologna center for the international multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial, coordinated by the Dutch Diverticular Diseases Group, “The Ladies Trial” investigating the laparoscopic treatment of perforated diverticulitis and being actively involved as primary operating surgeon. He is also Principal Investigator in the center of Bologna for the international multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial, coordinated by University of Helsinki, Laparoscopic versus open adhesiolysis for small bowel obstruction (NCT01867528) and being actively involved as primary operating surgeon. Since 2010 has been nominated by the University of Bologna as Tutor/Evaluating Professor in the discipline General Surgery in the Clinical Skills (Clinical Practice) Hospital session of the Medical Graduates for National Medical Licensing Exam. He has described and published in well regarded scientific journal or surgery books, several original or innovative surgical techniques in both open and laparoscopic surgery (Techniques for liver packing, for trauma splenectomy, duodenal damage control and 4-tubes ostomy in case of caustic injuries, techniques for Entero-Atmospheric fistulas isolation in Open Abdomen, low cost laparoscopic appendectomy, low cost SILS with surgical glove for appendectomy and other colorectal urgent diseases, laparoscopy for all types of emergency surgery procedures and for colorectal emergencies) and several clinical algorithms published within scientific articles (liver trauma, spleen trauma, hiatus hernias). He has performed to date more than 3000 major surgical procedures; out of them more than 1800 were urgent/emergency procedures and more than 490 laparoscopic cases. He performed more than 1300 procedures as first operator of all types of surgery, and more than 340 laparoscopic cases as first operator. In emergency laparoscopy setting he has performed as first operator any type of emergency surgery procedure with laparoscopic technique (complicated/perforated acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, lap repair of gastroduodenal perforations, laparoscopic removal of intra-gastric or intestinal foreign bodies, laparoscopic gastroenteronastomoses and lap GastroJJ, laparoscopy for adhesive small bowel obstruction and laparoscopic adhesiolysis, laparoscopic lavage for
  • 3. purulent perforated diverticulitis, laparoscopic Hartmann’s procedures and Laparoscopic Colonic resections with primary anastomosis for perforated diverticulitis, laparoscopy for diffuse peritonitis, laparoscopic reduction and repair in strangulated incisional hernia, laparoscopic reduction and repair of strangulated PEH, laparoscopic colonic resection with intracorporeal anastomosis or lap Hartmann’s for obstructing colon carcinoma). He ha also performed as first operator several laparoscopic procedures for Abdominal Trauma in hemodynamically stable patients such as laparoscopic splenectomy, drainage of pancreatic hematoma and hemostasis of pancreatic laceration, laparoscopic repair of traumatic diaphragmatic injuries, lap repair of traumatic small bowel lacerations. He has performed as well more than 1100 minor surgical procedures in outpatient or inpatient setting. Since 2011 he has founded and organized an Hands On Course for young Surgeons, ICU doctors, A&E doctors, General Doctors and nurses, about techniques of insertion and management of the thoracic drains in Emergency and Trauma setting. He is actually the Director of this Course, now held until his 3rd edition and invited in several italian hospitals (Rome, Naples and Palermo). He has also initiated and directed two Hands On Courses on Trauma Surgery and Emergency Laparoscopy for the Italian Society of Young Surgeons, held in Naples 2011 at the National Annual Conference of the Italian Society of Young Surgeons. Since 2011 he is Instructor, member of the Faculty of the Trauma Surgery and Hands On Course, official course of the Italian Society of Surgeons for Specialist Surgeons, initiated by the Trauma Team of Maggiore Hospital, with two editions held annually. Since 2014 (DTSC Edition held in Alicante June 5-6th ) he has been involved within the Spanish Faculty of Instructors (Director Dr. Fernando Turegano) of DSTC (Definitive Surgical Trauma Care course), under the auspices of IATSIC (International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care). He was a visiting doctor for short periods in several universities and hospitals in Italy and overseas, in France, Poland, United States, Mexico, South Africa. In 2006 he spent 4 months in the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, U.S.A.; he attended the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Division of General Surgery/Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Colo-Rectal Surgery and Surgical ICU in the Jackson Memorial Hospital as well as the Division of Trauma Surgery and Trauma ICU of Ryder Trauma Center. He has been involved in research projects of UM in the fields of Trauma and Surgical Oncology. In 2007 he spent 5 months, with the authorization of the University of Bologna and the Italian Ministry of Health, in the University of Kwazulu Natal, Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban, South Africa, with the role of Supernumerary Surgical Registrar and registered as Medical Practitioner to the Health Professions Council of South Africa. As supernumerary Registrar, he attended and performed On Call duties and 80 procedures of Emergency and Trauma Surgery in Addington Hospital and in the Trauma Center of Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. In South Africa he has achieved the BLS, ACLS and ATLS certification. In 2009 he successfully qualified as ALS Advanced Life Support Provider (European Resuscitation Council). He is active member of several scientific surgical societies in Italy (Italian Society of Surgeons, Italian Society of Young Surgeons) and overseas (International Society of Surgery, Trauma Society of South Africa). He is member of the Executive Committee, National Secretariat and Editorial Staff of the Italian Society of Young Surgeons. From 2011 he is member of the board of Directors of the Italian Society of Young Surgeons, Since 2015 has been accepted as Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, approved by the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons and privileged to use the FACS designation. He has also been accepted as a Fellow by the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England and privileged to use the FRCS designation. Since 2003 he is member of the Medical Board of the Province of Bologna (n. 14708); he was registered also to the Health Profession Council of South Africa (MP0641758). In 2007 he completed the verification of credentials and registration to the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates/International Credentials Services (ECFMG/EICS® number E176503). Since 2009 he is registered as Specialist in General Surgery to the English General Medical Council, in the Specialist Register (Ref. N. 7039978), for any work grade, including Consultant Surgeon. He speaks fluently English, Spanish and French. His main fields of interest are currently Gastrointestinal Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Emergency Surgery either open or laparoscopic, Trauma, Abdominal and Laparoscopic Surgery, Surgical Oncology and Breast Surgery.
