1. WORLDLY WISDOM VS KNOWLEDGE
To make students interested in studies, it
is necessary to link knowledge with
success. So the question is,

(About worldly wisdom relating to education, research, politics, administration, parenting, marriage, love
and about Godly Grace)
success. So the question is,
“Is knowledge necessary for success?”
There are enough examples of people who
lacked knowledge but became quite
successful.
2. Let us take the case of Prof. Ramesh. He was a mediocre student.
He hardly had any significant publications. But in spite of his
mediocre academic record, he could supersede his seniors and
could become the Principal of a prestigious state college like ours.
Prof. Ramesh believed that all others might have
knowledge but only he has wisdom.
He used to tell other teachers;
I have wisdom, you have knowledge
But I am Principal, of the college
3. Prof. Ramesh had a strong conviction that mere
knowledge is of no use; and that one should attain
wisdom to become successful in life. He believed that
college life is meant to enjoy and make merry. He often
told the students.
Why you want to come to college? Why you want to come to college?
You want wisdom or you want knowledge?
For wisdom, you don’t need to score
Just make merry, don’t be a bore
4. My Grandmom used to say that wisdom is acquired from one’s own
experience and experiences of others. She used to tell me many
stories full of wisdom. Most of the stories are fables and folklores that
are told through generations by grandparents and parents to their
children. Many of the stories are from Great Indian epics such as
Ramayana and Mahabharata. Now in nuclear families, children hardly
get any chance to listen to stories from their grandparents. My
grandmom didn’t have knowledge. She might have read up to upper
primary and certainly not beyond high school. But I think she had
wisdom.
So if the likes of Professor Ramesh could get PhD degree and become
the Principal, then my grandmom too could have as well become one.
I am convinced that wisdom is more important than knowledge. To
prove my point, let me tell a small story.
The son of a businessman returned home after completing his
management (MBA) degree. The businessman asked his son to
work for sometime as an assistant in his uncle’s business. The
businessman wanted his son to learn the business tricks from his
uncle so that he can successfully carry forward the family
business.
5. But his son replied, “Uncle is too old fashioned. Whenever I asked him about his business,
he has said that he was making loss and somehow making both ends meet. What can I learn
from him who cannot manage his own business? What does he know about modern
methods of business management?”
The businessman’s son did not go to his uncle but straightway joined his own family
business. He applied all the techniques he had learnt in MBA and started doing well in
business. Then he started boosting before his relatives and other businessmen. He started
saying, “See how I have made profit, whereas all of you are making losses. So if you will
learn modern techniques of business from me and apply it in your business, you too can
make profit.”
Very soon the news spread that businessman’s son has made lot of profit. The tax
authorities came to know about it and demanded more taxes. The social and political bodiesauthorities came to know about it and demanded more taxes. The social and political bodies
demanded more donations. The workers working in his firm wanted raise in pay. It was then
that the businessman’s son realised his folly. Then he said:
Bookish knowledge is of no use
Bookish knowledge can make you fuse
I was thinking, I knew all
It did cause me such a fall
Now I know, key business rule
Is never taught in business school
6. Too much knowledge can sometimes cause confusion and affect one’s
judgement. Here is another example.
In a certain town there was a quack who was an expert in
joining broken bones. A qualified orthopaedic doctor had also
opened his clinic nearby but people preferred the quack. The
quack had thriving practice whereas the doctor had none.
One day the doctor visited the quack and gifted him a book
on ‘Anatomy’. Then what happened? The quack was
overwhelmed by reading about the intricate details of human
body. He learnt that in addition to large number of bones, thebody. He learnt that in addition to large number of bones, the
human body consisted of different organs, nerves, arteries,
and veins. He became aware that a slight error on his part can
cause so much damage to a patient. This made the quack
nervous and from that day he was unable to treat any patient.
In a bid to do well the quack took too much care
and it resulted in his failure.
7. So too much care can be detrimental to performance, just as:
Too much wealth is hard to keep
Too much greed can sink you deep
Too much light can blur the vision
Too many facts can block the reason
Too much salt can spoil the taste
Too much care is but a waste
So, too much knowledge can become a liability. Now-adays we are living in
a knowledge world. We are getting overwhelmed with knowledge
explosion. There is need for selective use of knowledge with wisdom.
8. But what is wisdom? I asked this to one very close colleague of mine.
Presently I do not want to reveal his real name. So I shall refer him as X or
to make it seem less mathematical and appear like real name, I shall call
him Eax.
According to Eax, the meaning of wisdom may vary from person to person
and it is also changing with time. There may be difference of opinion on
whether to consider people like Prof. Ramesh as wise persons. But there
can be no denying the fact that one can attain necessary worldly wisdom
from such people.
Perhaps Professor Ramesh believed that everything is fair in love and war;Perhaps Professor Ramesh believed that everything is fair in love and war;
and that money is the most important thing.
There is money in education sector. It is a big business. A
common man spends his life-long savings mostly on three
things.
─ To have a house to live in
─ On medical treatment of his parents, wife and self
─ On education of his children
9. So there is scope to make lot of money from education. But for that
you need to get things done. So they say,
Think of money, don’t be naive
Without money you cannot thrive
There is lot of money you can make
If you know how to give and take
Eax had admitted of learning some truths of life from people like Prof.
Ramesh. He had told me many things about Prof. Ramesh. I have
shared some of those things in my book “Worldly Wisdom 2 Godly
Grace”.
