Atoms are very small in size and smaller
than anything we can imagine or compare
with.
Atoms are measured in nanometer.
1 nanometer = 10 -9 m or 1 meter = 109 nm.
Example :- The atomic radius of an atom of
hydrogen is 10-10 m.
The radius of a molecule of water is 10-9 m.

A molecule is a general group of two or more
atoms that are chemically bonded together, that
is, tightly held together by attractive forces.
A molecule can be defined as the smallest particle
of an element or a compound and is capable of an
independent existence and shows all the
properties of that substance.
Atoms of the same element or of different
elements can join together to form molecules.
The molecules of an element are constituted by the same
type of atoms.
Molecules of many elements, such as argon(Ar),
helium(He),…etc. are made up of only one atom of that
element.
But, this is not the case with most o the non-metals.
For example, a molecule of oxygen consists of two
atoms of oxygen and hence it is known as a diatomic
module O2(oxygen).
If 3 atoms of oxygen unite into a molecule, instead of
the usual 2, we get ozone.
The number of atoms
constituting a
molecule is known as
its atomicity.
Type of Element : Non – metal.
Name Atomicity
1. Argon - Monoatomic
2. Helium - Monoatomic
3. Neon - Monoatomic
4. Sodium - Monoatomic
5. Aluminum - Monoatomic
6. Hydrogen - Di-atomic
7. Oxygen - Di-atomic
Compounds composed of metals and non
metals contain charged species. The charged
species are known as ‘Ions’. An ion is a
charged particle and can be negatively or
positively charged. A negatively charged ion
is called an ‘Anion’ and the positively
charged ion is called a ‘Cation’.
