  1. Hello everyone & a very warm Welcome to this webinar. We have XXX people logged into this from all over the worldI’m Steve Nicholls & I’ll introduce myself properly in a momentOrientation:Pls type in a OK if you can hear me, and see the presentationHow to handle questions (near the end , or as we go, depending on timing. It’s likely that there won’t be time to answer all questions live, hence my email address is at the bottom of every slide)Brighttalk – you will be automatically invited to other webinars from Webrecruits channel, and you can subscribe to other channels too. Once this and all future webinars go out, it will then be available to view on demand.Votes RatingsPen, Paper – you really will need them!! I’d advise you to come back and view this again too… lot of info I appreciateConnect with both myself and webrecruit via the above links, and you’ll find us on all the social media channels – Facebook, Linked In, Twitter
  2. Ok, a bit of background about webrecruit and myself. I’m Steve Nicholls, a career coach based in the UK. Before I got into Career coaching I was in b2b sales (consultancy), and project management, general management. So I’ve been in the “real world” if you will, just so you know a little bit about my career. Incidentally, I came to careers work after being in sales, & it was a career crisis for me, so I’ve been through the career change process myself – and talked to someone like me to generate ideas…. I’m working closely with Webrecruit to bring to you an on-going series of webinars, of which this is the second, so it’s a really exciting time for us! The Getting the Edge at the Job Interview will be happening very soon too, so look out for that. There will be many more! You'll be automatically informed.I hope you all know a little of Webrecruit? First fixed-fee recruiter in the UK. Established 10-11 yrs, CEO James Caan (of the TV programme Dragons Den fame) is the Chair of webrecruit. Both our companies are committed to adding value to our services, and that’s why we bring these to you for free.I may use a bit of humour occasionally as is my coaching style, but I’m deadly serious about helping you, and I sincerely hope that this webinar does help you.
  3. Why did we decide to go with this subject? It’s needed by all accounts! ONE IN THREE OF ALL PEOPLE ARE UNHAPPY IN THEIR JOBSWhy does this happen? Perhaps “career development” isn’t taught enough in schools, colleges, universities. Graduates I talk to often feel underprepared re the job market / low confidence / social skills (in a business context)…. Maybe all of that leads to poor choices? So this webinar is for the one in three that I mentioned!!Can this presentation be all things to all people? Audience will be a mix of experienced people and the less experienced, ages from 25 to 55 – So a tough call to pitch it for everyone. We have senior directors, managers, students, not working, massive range… every conceivable industrySo please take what works for you, but what I’m going to tell you has worked for many many people. It’s not the only way of planning your career transition, but it’s a way I know that works…Lot to get through; a few complex ideas that I’ll attempt to simplify – my clients find this process challenging yes, but empowering, rewarding, and above all a practical means of identifying ideas if you’re starting from a “I don’t know where to begin” positionFirst of all I want to touch on Emotional Intelligence…
  4. EQ background – why its useful - this is a bit of bonus information before we get into the main content, but absolutely relevant to career change, and career progression.IQ tells us what we CAN do. EQ tells us what we WILL do. It’s the bit of the iceberg below the water line, its intuition, gut feeling – its much more than that though…Self awareness Self Management Social Awareness Relationship managementIn study after study, from many different industries and professions, those who had high EQ competencies outperformed their colleaguesFurther reading: Forbes online article: Intelligence Is Overrated: What You Really Need To SucceedJust to make those of you aware of EQ in case you want to look further into itI believe it’s a major factor in career planning, and it’s something that heavily influences career success. That’s my take on it, so that’s why I’ve put this is before we start with the career change planning. Link on slide if you want to know more – bear in mind it’s wikipedia!!
  5. This presentation is based on my 12 session programme, which has been a proven method of helping people move forward, but it includes many exercises that support the processthat there isn’t time to go into. I hope that by sharing the basic principles of the programme here with you that you can make a solid start to planning your next career move.Explore, dream, discover – three stagesAlso draws on: Higher self / most positive version of you / (emotional Intelligence)Actual outcome in a coaching sense with this process would be an action plan. So once you’ve done everything I’m going to tell you about, you’ve got to set actions, dates, meetings etc to make it happen.Martin Luther King “You don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step” – so lets take the first step…
  6. I sometimes ask people, and let me ask you now – If we were to sit down together 3 years from now, what would have to happen to make you feel happy with your success or progress…?This kind of questioning is designed to make you think of course!! It’s a small example of how exploration begins, to draw out those answers from you that you have inside you.Exploration.. Sound fair enough?
  7. So how do we explore, what does it mean (in context)? What EXACTLY can you do to start the exploration process?
  8. For many, it’s all about the job hunt…. To some of my clients I have tosay “Hold on!”… “We’ll get there” as they just want to job hunt, but this is a valuable early lesson. That lesson is take a step back….know yourselfTake the time to treat this whole process – your career – your life – with the respect / time it deserves
  9. Practical exercises that you can doPersonality profile test – plenty available at low cost online. I use Myers Briggs test.Highs and Lows of your career, risk taking? Cover age ranges, or per job perhaps? What was happening in your life at that time? What influenced how things progressed – or not? Do you see patterns or themes in your life? How have you shaped your life? What motivates you? Those are two things to get you started
  10. Life Story. 500 words about your career life; break it down into age ranges if its helps – all about heightening your self knowledge.Brutally honest – what have been successes, and failures. If not keen on writing, you can draw it as a river, with waterfalls perhaps, bends in the river etc – or perhaps a collage, go through magazines and tear out bits that represent you – this exercise will deepen your sense of who you are…
  11. Its where everything in life comes from…All part of getting the frame of mind in a positive modeSet aside all modesty!!Piece of paper; 10 Things you like about yourself – simple – words / sentences
  12. Tap into the best “you”…..I use a guided meditation, and on-going visualizations (Those techniques are used by Olympic athletes, so why don’t we use them?) – Im sure some of you do already.
  13. What?! I hear you ask…Just imagine for a moment; you’ve all seen nature documentaries on TV. You’ve seen how a Jellyfish moves through water? Think about that for a moment… It expands then contracts – that’s how it gains momentum and moves along… So I’m going to ask you to think in that way – first expand your thinking, then later on we will contract, but for now, we want ideas…. So expansion is keySo you’re open minded to this blue sky brainstorming, how in practical terms do you generate career ideas?
  14. Starting today, or tomorrow create one of the following – shoe box, a list, collage (as per slide), lots of post it notes – own it, make it yoursWhat do you add to your ideas list? You may already have ideas – great! Add to them…Factors about jobs, as well as jobs per se., could be single words – be in a mode of ‘constant enquiry’ (window cleaner example) – be looking at all sorts of job ideas and situations during your day – keep a small notepad and pen at the ready; dictaphone is another ideaAnything goes – no editing – that comes later – Even jobs you thought of doing when you were 9, 13, 16 etc. be open minded to this, and it will pay off.…Remember the Jelly fish…Kickstart by getting big job supplement from your favourite newspaper, and get busy with the scissors or highlighter penAim for at least 30+ themes, careers, conceptsKeep the Gremlin at bay!! (Link to it on my website – Taming Your Gremlin. I’ve read it, and it’s a great book – begin by “simply noticing” when that little voice says “you couldn’t do that job because….”)Keep it visible on a daily basis….. Its an on-going daily process
  15. Everyone has values… many organizations have their set of published valuesWhat do I mean by values in a career change context? Simply that any “ideal” career should reflect your values. They are the core of you. They make you who you are… So why would anyone join a company, or start a business venture that doesn’t reflect their values? It happens because again, we don’t take the time to step back and explore our whole self enough – we get caught up in the “job hunt” – understandable, but here we’re talking about career change PLANNING – and as part of that plan, values feature heavily.Example question which I ask my clients; perhaps you can reflect on this as I ask you the question? “If you could meet two amazing people from history that you admire, or currently famous, who would you choose?”…………….Why did you choose XXX? What would you want to speak to them about? That’s a tiny example!! But in that scenario we’d be having a discussion, I’d be scribbling away, and “values” would appear….. Many more like that!
  16. I would bet that everyone listening will instantly get the meaning of this slide? Work / Life Balance of courseIt’s a subject I spend a lot of time discussing with peopleHow do we take both sides into account? Because this process, as you can see is as much about LIFE as it is WORKI can give you one idea to help…
  17. For both sides of the balance there are factors that I suggest you address. If you don’t get the chance to note all of this down, remember you can come back and view this again at your leisure.Just like the ideas that you’ll be generating, the slide underpins the whole career change process. I’m going to tell you the final aim right at the end of this slide. Bear with me!Quick Overview of each heading is all there’s time for, but I wanted to make sure you had all of the info. Nothing held back here!WORK: Work env: large, small, corporate, small biz?, Achievements: List what you’ve achieved. “shout about it on paper!” remind yourself!, Map out what an ideal working day would look like to you, Skills you enjoy using, Professional strengths, and what really motivates you work-wise….LIFE: Life purpose? A Steve Jobs style short statement about “brand you”. Why are you here on this earth? BIGGGG questions here, which I have to be brief with… Next, Examine in turn your passions, values, and skills, then what are your life achievements? Higher self: This comes back to bringing the very best version of you to this whole process. I use a guided meditation as one way of tapping into your higher self….That’s a real whistlestop tour of work and life factors, and you’ll hopefully notice cross over between the two sides. Each one of these 12 areas would involve a separate coaching session or exercise – just to put it in context. After all things written down, the aim of this exercise is to produce a statement – call it a mission statement – of what it is that you want from your work and from your life…. 2 individual statements.
  18. By now you will have generated a lot of written notes, thoughts, and started to build ideasYou’ve been creating a blueprint, a plan for your futureWhat do you do with all of this?Whats the next stage in this process?
  19. Time to dream!!This whole career change planning process involves left and right brained thinking, so just to flag that up to you. There are ways to meet the needs of either left or right brained people, but can’t address that todaySo what is the DREAM stage? What exactly happens?
  20. Raid the ideas List. By now you should have many ideas listed. Remember we said 30 or more…Going through that list, try to identify THEMES, not specific jobs (e.g. Teaching as against Primary School, University Lecturer). Take your time with thisCould be a particular word you’ve cut out or circled, This is the jellyfish contracting now, still moving forwardYou may want to spread the following activities over a few days, to allow time for reflection.
  21. All that hard work with exploration, logging ideas, getting to know yourself much better hopefully. So you should have got to three themes – three broad working areas (for me it might be coaching, teaching, project management)Any way of tasting/testing these career/business ideas? Can you spend time working in the situation that appeals to you? Voluntarily? – E.g. coaching to teaching, I’d try to get myself into a shadowing of various teaching situationsInformational interview?
  22. We’re doing a fast tour of some complex ideas– For this slide when I refer to the spectrum, I’m basically referring to a 1-10, left to right, list – the blue section on the slideSpend some time really thinking through each theme, noting down the levels that you could get involved in that given area – to explain…E.g. if animal interest is a theme – at one end donating £10 per month, at the other end of the spectrum, a total change of lifestyle living and caring for those animalsYou may find that all three themes you’ve identified are very complimentary and link together – if so, one spectrum will work If there are three themes, then three of the above will be neededSo, it’s not about identifying three themes and moving on, we look at each of those themes in depthOnce you’ve done that write for 5 minutes on each theme – focussing on the results you’d like to create from each one – it’s a visualization process, so write, draw, its whatever works for you. Focus on resultsOnce done - If three distinct themes – see which one is most alive for you. Its also back to that intuition and EQ which will help you get three themes down to one…
  23. Congratulations! You’ve decided which career you’re going for! We’ve Explored (stage one), we’ve Dreamed (stage two), now we Discover the career path that’s right for you – FINAL PHASEReally reflect on what you’ve decided- is it what you truly want? Your Current Situation: The reality - spend a short sharp burst of time – maybe 5 minutes writing out all of your abilities, strengths, qualities & skills, qualifications, experience, training. Also list things which will help you – business networks? Also any info about family/financial situations – we want this to be a totally realistic picture for you. Also things like the market conditions in your new chosen career? All of this is bullet points. Be realistic, but try not to overlook all of your positives! If I was coaching you through this incidentally I’d be writing the same list in real time, then we’d swop notes and build a full picture. How to turn that Vision to Reality? We have to build a bridge, a plan, to get from vision to reality. By this time you should be so fired up that you’ll have a good deal of creative power: examples could be: create a business plan, explore financial backers, build a website, create certain ££savings, explore part-time options with current employer….. EtcAgain in a coaching situation I’d be doing this list too.
  24. Action Plan s.m.a.r.t. - could be 20 or 30 things on this action planThose previous processes will form the basis of your action planThe final step – you have to commit to carrying out the plan, or it’s worthless – we’ll talk about support mechanisms in a second, but this action plan document will be the master plan, the sum total of all of the soul searching effort you have put in getting to this stage.
  25. Self explanatory – will leave this on screen for a minute – most of you will know this very well – it’s been around for a long time.Ensure that every action point has all of the above!
  26. Keeping on track?Coach? Ensure they’re a good match for you.Good and trusted friend as “accountability partner”, being very self-disciplined! – once a week I’d suggest (Give them copy of action plan!)Keep things visible – ‘back of the toilet’ door stuff! Literally. Particularly the Ideas List, then the Action Plan. Don’t “file things away”On the AP every step is a small manageable win toward a big goal
  27. General re-capKnow yourself – we talked about gut feelings, intuition, and EQ (emotional intelligence)Work and life balanceIdea listDream – the expanding and contracting of ideasThree themes to one choiceImportance of the action planFocus on Commitment – and you’ll be successful
  28. Questions If TimeAppreciate that was fast – minimum of12 hours worth in 45 minutes!!If not - I will respond over the next few days
