Editor's Notes
Tweet is a post or updated on Twitter that is 140 characters or less.Twitter Handle – The Twitter Handle is the name you choose to represent you on Twitter. It also becomes the URL of your Twitter profile (twitter.com/YOURNAME). Many names are already taken, so you may have to be creative in picking your handle. Direct Message (DM) - Is a private message sent via Twitter to one of your followers. Here are a few things you should know about this feature:People you follow can send you a private message. You cannot send a DM to a user who is not following you. They behave more like tweets than emails: the sender or recipient of a DM can delete the message, and it will disappear from both sender and recipient inboxes.Twitter shows only your 100 most recent messages.Just like a tweet, DM’s can only be 140 characters long.@replies – Is what you use when you want to reply to a Tweet that someone else has posted, use an @reply by using the @ symbol followed by the other Twitterer's handle. When you use an @reply, the other Twitterer will see your post, even if he or she doesn't follow you.@mentions - Is a Tweet containing another user's Twitter handle, preceded by the "@" symbol Retweeting - Is how Twitter users share interesting tweets from the people they are following. They copy and paste the original tweet and send it out. To give credit to the original person, users usually put “RT” plus the originator’s username at the beginning of the tweet. Hashtag - is the # symbol and is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.
Fill out your profile – this means add a photo, get rid of the egg so others can see you’re a real person. Also by adding a bio about yourself, it helps people see what value you bring to the table and decide if they want to follow you. Start Following People – You can go to the “Who to Follow” tab and look at who twitter suggests, you can browse by interest or find friends by linking to your email contacts. Start Tweeting – Here is a list of a few ideas on what you can talk about: @replies –this is a great way to develop relationships with people and respond to their posts and conversations. It can show you support them and are interested in what they are tweeting about.Retweets – when you see a tweet that’s interesting to you…there is a good chance others will be interested too so share it by hitting the retweet button.Questions – ask a question and wait for the responses to roll in.What You’re Doing Update – Talk about a project you’re working on, a networking event you’re attending, something funny one of your kids did this morning…you get it. Blog Posts – Let folks read your blog by tweeting the title and the link or ask a question that gets answered in your blog.
