- Introduce our team and thank you for welcoming us to your District and clubs.
- Two common themes are mentioned about why the Rotary Foundation stopped directly supporting GSE. The first is not enough team members became Rotarians. The second is it was considered a “tourist” experience with less emphasis on vocational. This fails to acknowledge the complete vocational experience including the aspects shown. Vocational Experience The vocational visits are an important part of the Group Study Exchange experience; however they are only a part of the vocational benefit from participation in GSE. Apart from these visits, GSE activities include a broad range of vocational experiences and opportunities to use a develop skills outside the team member’s normal work environment, including:- Project management Every team member has been involved in each aspect of preparing for our exchange which included many activities including research and creating the presentation to a common standard, travel preparation, developing our clothing and uniform requirements, selection and procurement of gifts, and developing our PR requirements (business cards, brochure, social media presence, Google map, etc.) Teamwork Teamwork is an important pre-requisite in most vocations. Many organisations go to great lengths to achieve team building. The GSE was an excellent example of the importance of team building and the benefits achieved in executing a task. As a vocational experience, GSE is an intense and often high pressure situation with the team living and working together over an extended period. During our preparation this team managed to build an excellent team spirit as a group of friends with the ability to work together. This stood us in good stead as we executed our tasks as ambassadors for our District with very few problems. I would suggest that this high pressure grounding in teamwork would benefit every team member in future situations. Virtual teams The team was made up of members from places spread widely across the District. The monthly meeting were invaluable for preparation, discussion and developing the team spirit, however the majority of work was required to be done between meetings and therefore for the most part we operated as a virtual team and all had the opportunity to use skills and technology appropriate for disparate locations, including email, cloud storage of information, social media and online collaboration and video conference. Ambassadors The team and each member were selected to be ambassadors for their own vocation, their sponsor club, our Rotary District and our State and Country. This required that every member was able to network and socialise with new groups of people almost every day and be able to easily discuss aspects of Australian lifestyle and culture and represent our vocation and various organisations. The team and every individual achieved a high standard as ambassadors in all the facets they were required to represent. Social media for PR Social media is having an increasing impact on society. In our application it became a public relations and communication method for our part of the Rotary program, however the knowledge gained from our experience can be equally important in a business and vocation context. It is therefore a useful skill to have developed. A review of our social media strategy and an overview of the social media activity is included in the review of Team Public Relations in Appendix 2. Presentation and Public speaking One of the key elements of the GSE is delivering a presentation to the host clubs. The team successfully researched topics about interesting aspects of our country and lifestyle and developed a very professional presentation. Each team member had the opportunity to introduce themselves, their vocation, their sponsor club and then their selected presentation topic. An important part of developing the presentation was developing and maintaining a common standard of the presentation whilst every team member played an equal role in creation and delivery. The team maintained the professional image and presentation delivery throughout the exchange. Although some team members had previous speaking experience which also helped others to improve their own skills, we all benefitted from the improvement in personal confidence and delivery as the exchange progressed. This is an invaluable skill in very vocation. Networking The ability to quickly assimilate in a new group of people in a variety of environments is an excellent vocational skill. Every team member has developed this requirement to gain the best of their vocational and Rotary club visits and to varying degrees develop additional networks of friends and professional contacts. Vocational visits My discussions with each team member, my own observations following their vocational visits and the reports of the majority of team members indicate the vocational visits were beneficial to team members. This makes me confident that every team member was able to derive professional benefit from the visits. The impact on future career development is in the hands of team members as they choose how to make use of both the knowledge derived from the visits and also the skills they have had the opportunity to exercise in the whole course of GSE.

- We come from all parts of our District
- We had a stop over in Los Angeles at Santa Monica to recover from the jet lag and catch up on some team activity. Enjoyed a short visit to Hollywood
- Our GSE took us to District 5870 that covers central Texas and comprises 66 clubs with DG Suresh Pahwa welcoming our team with open arms and opened their heart and homes to our team.
- Our welcoming party at the airport wasted no time in taking us to get a taste of Texan food and culture, straight to Salt Lick BBQ. I thought I had died and gone to heaven with the large amount of meat and cold beer. They had a persuasive influence with even managing to get our vegetarian, Jo to have a taste of ribs. She did become very partial to these during the trip.
- Our first host family for the whole team Don Ray and Linda George. A wonderful couple who gave us a great welcome and helped us settle in. They were already flying the Australia flag when we arrived and we later added a WA flag to their collection.

- We have traversed the four GSE areas of your district. Making presentations at club meetings on 12 occasions involving at least 16 clubs and some members from additional clubs, attended many social functions and visits to places of interest. All hosted by the wonderful Rotarians and families from District 5870. Your members have have treated our team like royalty, leaving us the richer for many new friends and for the wonderful memories that we will carry with us for life.
- Our presentation to clubs was well received by everyone. The club visits highlighted the unique “personality” of each club. Many differences but also a lot of similarities.
- I found Rotarians everywhere with the same friendliness and characteristics, that I have found in other countries. A chance to see projects in progress, characters and new ideas that foster different clubs that can increase membership, see old friendship rekindled and new ones formed. Great ideas like your roll of Fame that I will take with me. And clubs having fellowship because you invited us here.
- We are all able to take away the benefit of personal and professional development as a result of the visits arranged for us. Mine from the McComb School of business to Freescale Electronics and Caterpillar and to some world class businesses hidden away in Shiner, Texas

- One of my highlights was getting to sit at the KVUE TV News anchor’s desk!
- I have been given some amazing vocational opportunities while on the GSE, including visits to TXDoT in Austin and Yoakum, road construction projects in Marble Falls, Williamson, Harker Heights and Burnet Counties, Austin Community College and KVUE TV.
- The next most beneficial experience for me was the vocational days, especially time where I was able to sit down, again, one on one, with experts in my field of work. These included Tim Sadler who is a Business Consultant specialising in the Birkmann Methodology, which is a personality profiling technique, and Crystal Dyer, who is a key note speaker on leadership development and HR management. I visited with Social Media experts at ACC who gave me some fantastic ideas on marketing techniques and social media advice, and also met with people who work with American Natives and people in low socio economic areas. An area to note was that I was able to tell these people about methodologies utilised in Australia and how that may benefit them also.
- I have had some excellent vocational visits during this trip to gain an understanding about banking and farming in Central Texas. Many of our lending policies are similar but the biggest eye opener was how many banks are here, which many of them were only local and only operating in a few locations. One thing I would like to take home is the drive through ATMs and I would like to leave a message that internet banking is easier than cheque books and not as scary as you think.
- One of the objectives of GSE is fellowship and fostering better relationships. Our interaction and fellowship with the members of District 5870 and their family and friends was the most important aspect of the exchange. The following selection of pictures shows a small sample of the fellowship enjoyed from our host families, clubs, GSE coordinators and activity guides.
- More fun an fellowship through informal dinners and other activities.
- We found so many reasons for fun and fellowship. We experienced some of the great rivalries of your state and nation, Republican / Democrat: Longhorn vs Aggie and still you were able to share a laugh with us comparing the biggest and best States in the world.
- My personal highlight was history everywhere we went and being able to relate back to previous reading
- Our visits allowed us to sample a wide selection of different places and activities covering places of interest, which included historical, cultural and just plain general life. The Alamo was a highlight for all, the Livestrong Foundation, BBQ, riverwalk and parks.
- Baseball and Ladybird Lake park
- Our visit to Fort Hood was an eye-opener
- During our cultural visits during the program, we had some that provided some great enjoyment. One of these was to go behind the scenes at Fort Hood which is the largest military base in the western world. Not many people other than soldiers got to get past the security gates, yet we got well and truly beyond them. Our group was given a tour of Corp III where all of the decisions relating to the military are made, including sitting in the chill out room that the USA President uses while in the building. We were provided with a debrief of the size of the military and discussed some of the missions accomplished. We were then let loose in the military village of 60,000 residents and then into some simulation training. Firstly we used the tanker and heavy vehicle simulation. The room was filled with sea container styled boxes with a tank interior on the inside. It was cool to blow up insurgents but the machines were very touchy. This was followed up with combat training on the computers which was similar to many Playstation games. I wasn’t very good at this as can be confirmed with my poor computer game skills. The coolest part was to come, shooting AK47’s and hand guns in hostage simulations. Busting through the door into a simulated house and having computer images on the walls to shoot was unreal. Given we built up an appetite we finished with lunch in the mess hall with soldiers and they were all welcoming of us and couldn’t speak highly enough of Australian soldiers. Overall is was a pretty cool way to spend my birthday.
- The aircraft carrier USS Lexington which is now a museum on the sea at Corpus Christi was a great highlight including a sample of every carrier borne aircraft used by the US Navy.
- A rodeo in a small town was an example of a very interesting community event
- Getting up close and personal with a drag line in a coal mine pit
- Fort Parker provided a sample of the Indian history of Texas.
- The Texas state capitol which they proudly proclaim is bigger than the United States capitol building was a very interesting historical and cultural visit. 6th Street provided a sample of “The music capital of the world”. University of Texas stadium, bigger seating capacity than any in Australia.
- Fredericksburg and the Texas White House, home of the LBJ museum.

- Jenny meets Sherriff Buster Brown, day 1. Jenny learns a new word. Spelunking. Rick Stacey entertains and we all laughed the night away. Jo meets Zebra and jumps out of her skin.
- We’ve had a lot of laughs on the trip but I’ve been able to narrow it down to two – the first involved a hungry puppy in Marble Falls who managed to eat two pairs of my shoes…
- Texans sure know how to have a great time. We have been spoilt with excellent food, great beers and fantastic company. I was aware that the economy isn’t in great shape, thus Mick and I took it upon ourselves to boost the beer economy over the past five weeks, and I think we have achieved.
- My absolute favorite thing about Texas is the people. I love that they are so welcoming and friendly and that they call you ma’am. I also love that everything really is bigger in Texas! The BBQ, the cars, the freeways, the sunsets, the camping stores, the bulls balls and best of all….
- I can’t farewell you all without mentioning the fantastic organization that is Rotary. I have come to realise that Rotarians are quite special people – they are a selfless and giving bunch, who all seem to have a common attitude and community spirit. My life will certainly not be the same from this point on and I am richer for having met each and everyone one of you. I thank Rotary International so very much for the opportunity I have been given.
- The GSE is not possible without all the wonderful host families. Mine were fantastic. A great thank you to all.
- GSE happens because of a lot of hard work both in daily activity but also in preparation and behind the scenes. Our team thanks Karen her team of Area coordinators and all the Rotarians and family members that have touched our lives in so many ways over the past five weeks.
- And finally, thank you to ALL of the Rotary teams who hosted us and to Rotary International as a whole. I consider our team extremely lucky in the fact that we got along all so well and have shared some fun times together. On a final note, I will be joining the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie on my return.
- Many people express a desire to come to Australia. We look forward to seeing you at the RI convention in Sydney in 2014
- But also come for friendship. Come to Perth, the State capital of Western Australia, enjoy the city, the Swan River, and nearby the Fremantle Markets and the wonderful beaches like Cottesloe
- The beautiful Island of Rottnest awaits you and then further south to the wine region of Margaret River and the nearby the fabulous beaches and coastal features of Dunsborough. We look forward to the possibility that some of our new friends will join us for friendship in 2014 so that we can show you some of our cities and State. The ties and scarfs worn by the team during our visit are Australian indigenous art. They are available for purchase on the silent auction for those that may like to enjoy them or just like to collect apiece of Australian GSE memorabilia. - The GSE experience has enabled me to meet many new and interesting people as well as see some sights that not many people, including locals, have seen. As many before me have said, this is a money can’t buy experience and will stick with me and the team for many years to come. D5870 have welcomed us to Texas with open arms from our arriving party at the airport and Salt Lick BBQ through to being here today. I thank all those that have been involved in planning, organising and executing this amazing adventure, especially Karen Bogisch. Thanks to my team mates, Steve, Jo, Jenny and Mick, I have enjoyed sharing this adventure with you, I have laughed constantly through the trip on the silly things we have done but most of all pulled each other through as a good team does. I look forward to joining the Rotary family when I return home and sharing this experience. If you ever drop in on the land down under, drop in for a beer and barbie.
