In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Translation: A surah which We have sent down and which We have ordained in it have We
sent down Clear Signs, in order that you may receive admonition (1). The woman and the
man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not
compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if they believe in Allah
and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment. (2). Let no man
guilty of adultery or fornication marry but a woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever: nor
let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry such a woman: to the Believers such a thing
is forbidden. (3). And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not
four witnesses (to support their allegations), flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their
testimony ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors;- (4). Unless they repent
thereafter and mend (their conduct); for Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful. (5). And for
those who launch a charge against their spouses, and have (in support) no evidence but their
own, - their solitary evidence (can be received) if they bear witness four times (with an oath)

by Allah that they are solemnly telling the truth; (6) And the fifth (oath) (should be) that they
solemnly invoke the curse of Allah on themselves if they tell a lie. (7) But it would avert
the punishment from the wife, if she bears witness four times (with an oath) By Allah, that
(her husband) is telling a lie; (8) And the fifth oath should be that she solemnly invokes the
wrath of Allah on herself if (her accuser) is telling the truth. (9). If it were not for Allah’s
grace and mercy on you, and that Allah is oft-Returning, full of Wisdom (10)

II. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING;
Q-1. Why surah “Nur” was given this name?
Ans: Surat An-Nur was given this name because it includes a luminous verse, which
says ‫ا‬
ِ
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth(, and because
it consists of rules and morals that call for chastity, preservation of honor and virtue.
These are values that illuminate life and the conscience of a believer as the dark alleys of
lewdness cannot be illuminated except by the radiance of Allah, glorified be He.
Q-2: Explain the characteristics of Madaniyyah surahs of the Holy Qur'an?
Ans: The main characteristics of Madaneyyah surahs of the Holy Qur'an are:-
1) Focus on explaining the following matters: Practical legislations and detailed rulings
as to acts of devotion, transactions, sharia penalties, jihad, peace, war, the family system,
rules of governance and methods of legislation.
Grade-12/Notes/Islamic Studies/U-1; L-1- Protecting……..( Surat An-Nur (1-10) Page 3 of 6
2) Address Ahl al Kitab (people of Books) and call on them to embrace Islam.
3) Include lengthy sections and verses in a style that determines the rules and objectives
of legislation.
4) The vocative forms in them is mostly “ ‫وا‬ُ‫ن‬َ‫م‬‫ا‬َ‫ء‬ َ‫ين‬ِ‫ذ‬َّ‫ل‬‫ٱ‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ه‬ُّ‫ي‬َ‫أ‬ََٰٓ‫ي‬
ْ ” O you who believe!”
5) Uncover the behavior of the hypocrites and explain the danger they represent to Islam
Q-3: The surah An-Nur begins with word “Surah”. Explain its significance?
Ans: A surah ٌ‫ة‬َ‫ور‬ُ‫س‬ (in the Arabic language is a name for an honorable status; a high wall
is a "sur". Therefore, a chapter of the Qur'an is called 'surah' because of the honor
accompanying it and because of its loftiness. An-Nur Chapter begins by the word 'surah'
to imply to one who engages in interpreting it that these gracious verses have been
revealed to build numerous, concentric walls, as it were, to surround chastity and protect
purity.
Q-4: Define adultery and what is sharia rule on it?
Ans: Adultery is a sexual intercourse between a man and woman who are unmarried
according to sharia contract. It is a major sin in Islam and prohibited in Sharia.
Q-5. What is the punishment in this world for adultery? Who will inflict it?
Ans: The punishment for an adulteress and an adulterer is one hundred lashes. It is
expressed in terms of lashes to indicate avoiding excessiveness in whipping. The
punishment is to be inflicted after establishing evidence and proofing that the couple
concerned has engaged in adultery. It is inflicted only by the party that is authorized by
the ruler.
Q-6: The verses prohibit showing leniency towards (the punishment) to an adulterer.
Why?
Ans: The verses prohibit showing leniency towards an adulterer’s punishment because
the consequences of such an act will be borne by society, such as intermingling
genealogies and spread of deadly diseases. Economically, the spread of deadly diseases
costs the state too much money and effort to provide treatment and care, in addition to
awareness raising campaigns in the media.
Q-7: Clarify the difference between “Receiving Admonition” and “Reflecting”?
Ans: Receiving Admonition: It is to heed the warning given and to avoid falling into
what one is being warned about
Reflecting: It is to think deeply about the given information whilst all the faculties ie:
body mind and heart. The one, who reflects, receives admonition but it is not necessary
that one who receives admonition will also reflect.
Grade-12/Notes/Islamic Studies/U-1; L-1- Protecting……..( Surat An-Nur (1-10) Page 4 of 6
Q-8: What is the wisdom behind giving priority to worldly punishment over
intimidation by torture in the Hereafter in the verses establishing ' hadd'
(punishment) for adultery?
Ans: The soul may be able to bear the worldly punishment but it will suffer greatly if
punished in the hereafter for the same crime. The immediate punishment of exposure,
scandal and social rejection deters one from falling into this heinous sin of adultery.
Q-9. Point out the punishment for one those who slander chaste woman and accuse them
of committing adultery without substantiating this accusation by four witnesses?
Ans: The punishments to them are given below:
1) Physical; i.e. being flogged eighty lashes
2) Moral; their testimony is not acceptable in courts or trading
3) Religious; these are dissolute persons who are alienated from the obedience of
Allah ‫جالله‬ ‫جل‬
Q-10. Explain the role of society in the prevention of adultery?
Ans:
 Combating exaggerated dowries.
 Prohibition of pornographic websites
 Proper use of leisure time among young people through sports, charity works etc.
 Raising awareness of the importance of the obligation of decency and the dangers
of adultery.
Q-11. Disclose the Divine wisdom behind the legislation of the oath of condemnation
(li'an)?
Ans: Allah ‫جل‬
‫جالله‬ legislated the oath of condemnation (li'an) between spouses to guard
against injustice and repression within the family, to bestow honor on the sacred
relationship between spouses and to prevent arbitrary accusation. This divine legislation
is an embodiment of justice and protection and preservation of honor in their highest
forms.
Q-12: Explain the aspects of mercifulness and wisdom manifest in the legislation
(li’an)?
Ans: Aspects of mercifulness and wisdom manifest in the legislation are the following:
1) If there is no oath of the condemnation (li' an), a husband will be subject to the
punishment of slander in spite of his apparent truthfulness and the fact that he is not
fabricating charges against his wife because they share shame and ignominy.
2) The oath of condemnation (li'an) provides the husband with a loophole out of the
difficulty of supplying four witnesses, maintaining silence towards what he has seen and
the possibility of having a child taking his name and becoming his heir.
3) The oath of condemnation (li'an) provides the wife with a loophole to escape
punishment and shame if her husband accuses her unjustly and arbitrarily of adultery.
Grade-12/Notes/Islamic Studies/U-1; L-1- Protecting……..( Surat An-Nur (1-10) Page 5 of 6
Q-13. What is the procedure of "
َ‫ع‬ِ‫ل‬
‫ان‬
" (Oath of Condemnation)
Ans: The husband starts swearing; he swears by Allah four times that he is true in
accusing his wife of adultery. The judge then reminds him of torture in the Hereafter and
asks him to say, "The curse of Allah is upon me if 1 am lying". The wife then repudiates
this charge by four oaths of her own in which she says he is lying in accusing her of
committing adultery. The judge then reminds her of the torture in the Hereafter and asks
her to say, "The wrath of Allah is upon me if my husband is telling the truth”
Q-14. Explain the Following:
a) Allah, glory be to Him, says: َ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ ٞ
‫ة‬َ‫ف‬ِ‫ئ‬ٓ‫ا‬َ‫ط‬ ‫ا‬َ‫م‬ُ‫ه‬َ‫ب‬‫ا‬َ‫ذ‬َ‫ع‬ ۡ
‫د‬َ‫ه‬ ۡ‫ش‬َ‫ي‬ ۡ
‫ل‬َ‫و‬
‫ٱ‬
َ‫ين‬ِ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ ۡ
‫ؤ‬ُ‫م‬ ۡ
‫ل‬ (and let a party of the
Believers witness their punishment)
b) Four witnesses are required to prove adultery contrary to all other cases where only
two witnesses are required to prove a case.
c) The fundamental rule in Islam is mercy and clemency; however, the cases of
adulterers are subject to vehemence and sternness.
Ans:
a) This is to act as an admonition to prevent others from falling into the same sin.
b) This is out of the mercy of Allah ‫جالله‬ ‫جل‬ as He is ‘As-Sathar’ prefers to cover the sin.
c) There are several immediate consequences to this crime such as diseases, depression,
poverty, illegitimate children etc…
Q-15. List out three damages to husbands and wives that Allah ‫جالله‬ ‫جل‬ has warded off
by legitimizing the oath of condemnation (Ii'an)?
Ans:
1) If there was no option of li’an, the burden of proof would have been on accuser.
2) The oath is lenience on the husband as is not required to provide four witnesses if he
takes the oath.
3) The oath is a means of protection and defenses for the woman, in case the husband is
a liar.
III. True or False
1) Quran prohibited showing leniency towards an adulterer. (True)
2) Adultery is proven by one witness. (False)
3) Adulterer should be punished by his own confession. (True)
4) Who slander chaste woman and accuse them of committing adultery will be punished
by eighty lashes. (False)
5) The word Hadd “ َ‫ح‬
‫د‬ " means punishment. (True)
6) The word ‘Slandering’ (In Surat An-Nur) means accusing others of Zina. (True)
Grade-12/Notes/Islamic Studies/U-1; L-1- Protecting……..( Surat An-Nur (1-10) Page 6 of 6
IV. Fill in the Blanks
1) Surah An-Nur is a Madaniyyah Surah

The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if they believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment. (2). Let no man guilty of adultery or fornication marry but a woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever: nor let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry such a woman: to the Believers such a thing is forbidden. (3). And those who launch a charge against chaste women, and produce not four witnesses (to support their allegations), flog them with eighty stripes; and reject their testimony ever after: for such men are wicked transgressors;- (4). Unless they repent thereafter and mend (their conduct); for Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful. (5). And for those who launch a charge against their spouses, and have (in support) no evidence but their own, - their solitary evidence (can be received) if they bear witness four times (with an oath)

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING; Q-1. Why surah “Nur” was given this name? Ans: Surat An-Nur was given this name because it includes a luminous verse, which says ‫ا‬ ِ ‫ض‬‫ر‬َ‫اۡل‬َ‫و‬ ِ‫ت‬‫ا‬َ‫او‬َ‫م‬َّ‫س‬‫ال‬ ُ‫ور‬ُ‫ن‬ ُ‫ه‬َّ‫ل‬‫ل‬ " )Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth(, and because it consists of rules and morals that call for chastity, preservation of honor and virtue. These are values that illuminate life and the conscience of a believer as the dark alleys of lewdness cannot be illuminated except by the radiance of Allah, glorified be He. Q-2: Explain the characteristics of Madaniyyah surahs of the Holy Qur'an? Ans: The main characteristics of Madaneyyah surahs of the Holy Qur'an are:- 1) Focus on explaining the following matters: Practical legislations and detailed rulings as to acts of devotion, transactions, sharia penalties, jihad, peace, war, the family system, rules of governance and methods of legislation.
  • 3. Grade-12/Notes/Islamic Studies/U-1; L-1- Protecting……..( Surat An-Nur (1-10) Page 3 of 6 2) Address Ahl al Kitab (people of Books) and call on them to embrace Islam. 3) Include lengthy sections and verses in a style that determines the rules and objectives of legislation. 4) The vocative forms in them is mostly “ ‫وا‬ُ‫ن‬َ‫م‬‫ا‬َ‫ء‬ َ‫ين‬ِ‫ذ‬َّ‫ل‬‫ٱ‬ ‫ا‬َ‫ه‬ُّ‫ي‬َ‫أ‬ََٰٓ‫ي‬ ْ ” O you who believe!” 5) Uncover the behavior of the hypocrites and explain the danger they represent to Islam Q-3: The surah An-Nur begins with word “Surah”. Explain its significance? Ans: A surah ٌ‫ة‬َ‫ور‬ُ‫س‬ (in the Arabic language is a name for an honorable status; a high wall is a "sur". Therefore, a chapter of the Qur'an is called 'surah' because of the honor accompanying it and because of its loftiness. An-Nur Chapter begins by the word 'surah' to imply to one who engages in interpreting it that these gracious verses have been revealed to build numerous, concentric walls, as it were, to surround chastity and protect purity. Q-4: Define adultery and what is sharia rule on it? Ans: Adultery is a sexual intercourse between a man and woman who are unmarried according to sharia contract. It is a major sin in Islam and prohibited in Sharia. Q-5. What is the punishment in this world for adultery? Who will inflict it? Ans: The punishment for an adulteress and an adulterer is one hundred lashes. It is expressed in terms of lashes to indicate avoiding excessiveness in whipping. The punishment is to be inflicted after establishing evidence and proofing that the couple concerned has engaged in adultery. It is inflicted only by the party that is authorized by the ruler. Q-6: The verses prohibit showing leniency towards (the punishment) to an adulterer. Why? Ans: The verses prohibit showing leniency towards an adulterer’s punishment because the consequences of such an act will be borne by society, such as intermingling genealogies and spread of deadly diseases. Economically, the spread of deadly diseases costs the state too much money and effort to provide treatment and care, in addition to awareness raising campaigns in the media. Q-7: Clarify the difference between “Receiving Admonition” and “Reflecting”? Ans: Receiving Admonition: It is to heed the warning given and to avoid falling into what one is being warned about Reflecting: It is to think deeply about the given information whilst all the faculties ie: body mind and heart. The one, who reflects, receives admonition but it is not necessary that one who receives admonition will also reflect.

Ans: The soul may be able to bear the worldly punishment but it will suffer greatly if punished in the hereafter for the same crime. The immediate punishment of exposure, scandal and social rejection deters one from falling into this heinous sin of adultery. Q-9. Point out the punishment for one those who slander chaste woman and accuse them of committing adultery without substantiating this accusation by four witnesses? Ans: The punishments to them are given below: 1) Physical; i.e. being flogged eighty lashes 2) Moral; their testimony is not acceptable in courts or trading 3) Religious; these are dissolute persons who are alienated from the obedience of Allah ‫جالله‬ ‫جل‬ Q-10. Explain the role of society in the prevention of adultery? Ans:  Combating exaggerated dowries.  Prohibition of pornographic websites  Proper use of leisure time among young people through sports, charity works etc.  Raising awareness of the importance of the obligation of decency and the dangers of adultery. Q-11. Disclose the Divine wisdom behind the legislation of the oath of condemnation (li'an)? Ans: Allah ‫جل‬ ‫جالله‬ legislated the oath of condemnation (li'an) between spouses to guard against injustice and repression within the family, to bestow honor on the sacred relationship between spouses and to prevent arbitrary accusation. This divine legislation is an embodiment of justice and protection and preservation of honor in their highest forms. Q-12: Explain the aspects of mercifulness and wisdom manifest in the legislation (li’an)? Ans: Aspects of mercifulness and wisdom manifest in the legislation are the following: 1) If there is no oath of the condemnation (li' an), a husband will be subject to the punishment of slander in spite of his apparent truthfulness and the fact that he is not fabricating charges against his wife because they share shame and ignominy. 2) The oath of condemnation (li'an) provides the husband with a loophole out of the difficulty of supplying four witnesses, maintaining silence towards what he has seen and the possibility of having a child taking his name and becoming his heir. 3) The oath of condemnation (li'an) provides the wife with a loophole to escape punishment and shame if her husband accuses her unjustly and arbitrarily of adultery.
  • 5. Grade-12/Notes/Islamic Studies/U-1; L-1- Protecting……..( Surat An-Nur (1-10) Page 5 of 6 Q-13. What is the procedure of " َ‫ع‬ِ‫ل‬ ‫ان‬ " (Oath of Condemnation) Ans: The husband starts swearing; he swears by Allah four times that he is true in accusing his wife of adultery. The judge then reminds him of torture in the Hereafter and asks him to say, "The curse of Allah is upon me if 1 am lying".
