Research and Planning [Music Video]
1. Research and Planning
Part 1: Lyric Analysis
I woke up weak today and needing your voice
Crawled into the speakers and turned up the volume
Felt so sick today but cured by your noise
My head in the speakers is drowning out volumes
In ashes to ashes, I'm falling falling
In ashes to ashes, I'm losing losing
In curl and grazes, I'm feeling feeling
In curl and grazes, I'm losing losing
Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up

I dress up bright tonight and needing the beat
Dance into the speakers and max up the volume
Feel so high tonight and moved by my feet
My heart in the speakers is loving the volume
In pretty vacant, I'm jumping jumping
In pretty vacant, I'm moving moving
In teaches of Peaches, I'm speeding speeding
In teaches of Peaches, I'm moving moving

In Delia's gone I’ll keep it with mine
Birdland clouds sous le soleil
Sous le soleil exactement sunshine superman
I want you ghosts in some velvet morning
Paper wings Virginia Avenue Laura
In summer's almost over I walk the line a night
Like this strange fruit
In hat full of hollow, I'm diving diving
In hat full of hollow, I'm screaming screaming
In poison voodoo, I'm living living
In poison voodoo, I'm screaming screaming
Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn it up turn it up turn it up turn it up
Turn me on
The first verse conveys the feeling of almost
weakness and that this person is missing
someone. Is as though they can’t live without
this person.
The pre-chorus references other songs which
are Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie, Curl and
Grazes are songs by Sneaker Pimps. The lyrics
of the mentioned songs implicates the use of
drugs and a possible break-up.
The chorus has a literal meaning of putting
the music up and be away of blocking out the
world and everyone. A way of escapism.
This verse is trying to convey that they are
trying to get over it by dressing up and going
out and feeling high off of music.
This pre-chorus references another artists’
songs and albums such as Pretty Vacant by
Sex Pistols and the album of Peaches from
2000.
The bridge consists of song references by
different artists such as Johnny Cash, Hole,
The Cure, Frank Sinatra and other more.
This pre-chorus consist of song referencing
by Smiths and as well as, self-promotion for
their 1st
and 2nd
album.

Analysis
The concept of the song is about escaping life through music. The song is made up of referencing old
songs. With each songs referenced, there comes the emotion of how the person’s feeling or their
physicality during the song. A lot of these could be in reference to addiction and escapism.
The imagery that it portrays has a contrast between colours, I dress up bright tonight and needing the
beat. Most of the footage is in black and white and taken from a live performance of the song, in
contrast to two band members lip-synching the song in bright outfits against white background.
The narrative of the music video conveys as though they are travelling to a gig to perform live to the
audience with the song title. The sub-narrative that the music video is trying to convey is like they’re
going to a party.
Robots in Disguise have mostly produced music that is associated with the electropunk genre.
Electropunk is a combination of punk and electro rock music; the genre originated between 1977 and
1984 where guitarists substituted their guitars with synthesizer.
The pace of the music is quite steady and slow pace, which synchs to the music video – this might be
intended as of most of the music videos are usually synched up with the beats of the music.
The music is 3 minutes and 51 seconds, it’s just under 4 minutes. However, the music video is 4-
minute long due to the music video having an introduction to the song.
The image of the band is a reflection of the electropunk genre, with the inclusion of alternative style
clothing that not only is a prime example of early 2000 style but also is fashion-forward with eccentric
and avant-garde pieces.
The band members (Sue Denim and Dee Plume) tend to wear makeup that mirror the style and genre
of their music videos. They use neon and metallic colours in abstract shapes and designs. This can be
shown in the music video for their song ‘The Tears’ where they are dressed as a cross-over between
mimes and clowns with makeup to match.
3. The tone of their existing videos are quite similar to one another, they show punk and rebellious
imagery. The colour scheme they most likely use are bright colours contrasting with monotonous
shades. One music video in particular, GIRL, is light-hearted on the surface but conveys a pro-feminist
message. The lyrics detail common slurs that men call women whilst also telling women that they
should own those names, and not feel offended and that they should fight against the slurs.
