their community, such as illiteracy, lack of safe
water, hunger, pollution, inadequate housing
What Are Rotary Community Corps?
or vocational skill
development.
• Each RCC is sponsored by a Rotary club. As with
Rotaract and Interact clubs, the sponsor club acts as
its partner in service.
• RCCs may exist for the duration of a single project or
go on indefinitely to address various local needs.
RCCs: Flexible Partners in Service for Rotary
clubs
• RCCs are active in urban
and rural communities, in
both developed and
developing countries.
• RCC members can comprise an entire village,
neighborhood, or community association that wants
to work together, or a diverse group of service-
minded individuals.
Who Can Join a Rotary Community Corps?
• RCCs offer
disadvantaged and
underrepresented
groups an opportunity
to empower
themselves and their
community.
Identification of local needs
Community members take the lead in deciding what their
community needs and what service activities to pursue.
Develop Leaders
Working in partnership with Rotarians help RCC members
develop leadership skills.
Dedication
As representatives of the community being served, RCCs are
motivated to produce real, lasting results — not just a quick “feel
good” exercise.
Sustainability
RCCs can exist beyond the duration of a single project, ensuring
that progress is maintained even if the sponsoring Rotary clubs
are no longer directly involved.
Benefits of Working with RCCs
• Tell your club about the RCC program and its
benefits
• Research the need for and feasibility of establishing
an RCC
• Guide the process of forming an RCC once the
club(s) has agreed to sponsor one
• Identify and recruit at least 10 members for your
RCC who reside, are employed, or study near your
club’s community
• Introduce the RCC members to your club and discuss
ways of collaboration on service projects
How to a Start Rotary Community Corps
How to a Start Rotary Community Corps
• Register your RCC with Rotary International
• Find resources and application materials at:
www.rotary.org/rcc
• Contact your district's RCC Chair or RI staff

How to maintain an effective RCC?
• Provide ongoing guidance and support to the RCC in
developing its service projects
• Establish an RCC Committee in your club
• Have this committee work closely with the RCC and
update the club on the RCC’s activities
• Invite RCC members to your club meetings
• Provide RCC members leadership and/or
fundraising training
• Publicize RCC success stories (and share them with
RI)

Editor's Notes

  1. [Safak] Good afternoon everyone and thank you for joining us today for our session on Rotary Community Corps.

  3. Today we’ll talk about what RCCs are, how to sponsor and grow a successful RCC, and how to leverage RCCs to - Strengthen Rotary’s network - Develop future leaders - Conduct effective service projects - Ensure project sustainability First, I’ll give you a introduction to Rotary Community Corps. Then, I will turn it over to our panelists who have a wealth of knowledge with RCCs. After we hear from our three panelists, we will have about 20 minutes to address your questions.
  4. Safak: Let’s begin. What are Rotary Community Corps? What do they do? RCCs are teams of non-Rotarian men and women from the local community who work in partnership with Rotary clubs to improve their communities. They meet regularly and plan and implement local projects.
  5. Safak: What do they do? RCCs implement creative and sustainable solutions to meet a wide array of needs in their community, such as illiteracy, lack of safe water, hunger, pollution, inadequate housing or vocational skill development As representatives of the community being served, RCC members bring enthusiasm, creativity, and sustainability to the projects they design and implement. In other words, they offer community solutions for community issues.
  6. Safak: RCCs are flexible partners in service for Rotary clubs Each RCC is sponsored by a Rotary club, like Rotaract and Interact clubs. As with Rotaract and Interact, the sponsor club acts as its partner in service for community development projects. Some RCCs are founded to address a specific project, while others attempt to tackle larger problems in the community. Some RCCs may go on indefinitely to address various local needs. The goals of an RCC will depend on its community’s specific needs. RCCs are active in urban and rural communities, in both developed and developing countries. Remember that no matter where you are, even if it is a developed country, there are always underserved groups and communities in need of assistance. RCCs can help identify — and address — these service opportunities.
  7. Safak: Who can join a Rotary Community Corps? Membership in an RCC is open to any non-Rotarian adult in the community who shares Rotary’s commitment to service. RCC members can comprise an entire village, neighborhood, or community association that wants to work together, or a diverse group of service-minded individuals. RCCs also offer disadvantaged and underrepresented groups an opportunity to empower themselves and their community.
  8. Safak: Working with RCCs delivers great benefits for Rotarians, RCC members, and communities in need. Identification of local needs: By forming an RCC, your club can empower the community members to take the lead in deciding what their community needs are and what service activities to pursue. RCCs may represent the underrepresented groups in the community and their participation to the projects can tremendously improve the project success. And, successful projects enhances Rotary’s image and impact in the community. Develop Leaders :Collaboration with Rotarians help RCC members develop leadership skills that allows them to better participate in their community in an active and meaningful way. Dedication : As representatives of the community being served, RCCs are motivated to produce real, lasting results — not just a quick “feel good” exercise. This dedication help them deliver impactful projects. Sustainability : RCCs can exist beyond the duration of a single project, ensuring that progress is maintained even if the sponsoring Rotary clubs are no longer directly involved.
  9. Safak: How to a start Rotary Community Corps? First, tell your club about the RCC program and its benefits Research the need for and feasibility of establishing an RCC Guide the process of forming an RCC once the club(s) has agreed to sponsor one Identify and recruit at least 10 members for your RCC who reside, are employed, or study near your club’s community. Introduce the RCC members to your club and discuss ways of collaboration on service projects
  10. Safak: Register your RCC with Rotary International Find resources and application materials at: www.rotary.org/rcc If you ever have questions you can always ask your district’s RCC Chair, or RI staff. RI staff contact: rotary.service@rotary.org
  11. Safak: Now, you formed an RCC. How are you going to make sure it will function effectively? - Your club should provide ongoing guidance and support to the RCC in developing its service projects You can do this by establishing an RCC Committee in your club led by a Chair or an RCC advisor. This Committee should work closely with the RCC and update the club regularly on the RCC’s activities. - You can invite RCC members to your club meetings - You can provide RCC members leadership and/or fundraising training You should publicize RCC success stories by leveraging your club’s, district's, and RI’s media platforms Now that I covered what RCCs are and how to start and maintain a successful RCC, I will turn it over to our first panelist Past District Governor Rajani Mukerji.
  12. [Staff note:] Since Director Alpay introduces each of you at the beginning, let’s keep this slide brief.
  13. Today I’m going to tell you some success stories of doing Rotary projects in RCCs of RI District 3291, India
  14. Economic and community development is one of the six focus areas of Rotary International. Rotary club of Calcutta Metropolitan has planned a rural agricultural organic farming project to empower farmers to convert, renew and restore the soil health in a geographic area (villages) where majority of the population are farmers
  15. # The prime objective is to help farmers to adopt Eco Agriculture and Organic Farming to emerge a better, safe and healthy world. # As an initiative to address this global issue, a sustainable organic farming project has been planned with the help of local cooperating organization and farmers’ clubs
  16. # It all started in the year 2001 when a community tube-well located outside the farmhouse of a Rotarian member dried up and the latter provided water to the thirsty from his own tube-well. # The member brought this to the notice of the club members who swung into action. # The member knew the local community members well and played a major role in identification of suitable members to join Chaltaberia Ganaunnayan Samity, the RCC in Barasat.
  17. # The benefits of education, healthcare, water & sanitation, adult literacy, vocational training, micro-credit, village roads.......the list goes on. # The relationship continues & the ongoing organic farming project - Global Grant # 14-18186 is a living example of how RCCs can help in implementation of Rotary programs.
  18. # RC Calcutta Metropolitan organized and constituted three RCCs at BARASAT to get hold of and gain maximum self help service from rural group of people and undertake valuable self help community development project # Three Primary schools were established at the territory of the three RRCs and each RCC played active contributory and instrumental role for smooth management of the schools. The Teachers and the School management committee members are from the village # 2 school buildings were constructed to run primary schools in Joypul and Nabapalli. The RCC played a very helpful role during the construction stages especially in supervision and timely construction of the school buildings. # RCC members also helped Rotary in identifying suitable land for school buildings. # RCC members played a major role during construction of village roads leading to the schools by convincing villagers that today's pain will turn out to be tomorrow's gain. The villagers bore all the hardships during the construction period happily, thanks to the role played by the RCC. # RCC members have been Rotary’s outreach source in getting students admitted to the schools in the initial stages.
  19. # A Massive Water and Sanitation project was concluded in all the three villages satisfying and meeting the total need of the villagers with the active and useful support of the three RCC members # Rotary installed nearly 750 toilets and 200 water wells in Barasat under TRF's 3H Grant. # The RCC played a major role in selection of sites for installation of toilets and water wells as Rotary’s outreach hand. # They played a major role in resolving conflicts that arose during selection of sites and distribution of toilets and water wells through their continued guidance on sensitive local issues. # Micro Credit operation was also initiated with the help of RCC members and the Micro credit helped them to change the livelihood and the means of living # Rotary provided the light of education under adult literacy programme to the community and followed it up with skill development which empowered the beneficiaries to earn a livelihood. Rotary helped them with micro-credit so that they were able to establish themselves in life.  # The RCC helped Rotary not only in identifying the beneficiaries but also in timely recovery of loans given to them. This relationship continues till today and the RCC have been helping us in monitoring and stewardship of micro-credit activities in Barasat area.
  20. Building up a relationship by the activities in RCCs since 2001 and successful implementation of various projects to fulfill community needs helped RC Calcutta Metropolitan to take-up Organic Farming project at the RCCs
  21. # The Club is known for doing projects in the fields of education, healthcare, integrated community development, organic farming, etc. It has been the policy of the club to involve the RCCs in all grant projects, be it a District Grant/Matching Grant/3H Grant or a Global Grant. This way we ensure the project remains sustainable, measurable while providing maximum relief to the beneficiaries # Club believes that RCC is the biggest tool for identification of community needs which is why it has always leveraged RCCs in all grants including Global Grants and the results have been rewarding [RAJANI]: This is the end of my presentation.
