This session will highlight the importance of continued financial support from every Rotarian, every year. Through discussions and exercises, we’ll examine different reasons individuals have for not supporting The Rotary Foundation, and we’ll share strategies and responses to assist you in engaging them to give in the future.

- SAVILLE 3 minutes It is common to encounter a variety of objections when asking for a gift. Some of the most common are associated with the level of connection with Rotary; the level of understanding with how funds are used for local and international purposes; cultural differences with respect to giving and recognition; and more generally, a lack of understanding about the Foundation.
- SAVILLE 15 minutes Before we start to identify strategies to engage members who don’t give, let’s spend a few minutes with those sitting at your table to discuss why we SHOULD donate to The Rotary Foundation. What makes our Foundation unique and worthy of our charitable dollars, euros, pounds, yen or rupees? Let’s take about 10 minutes to discuss some of the strengths of our Rotary Foundation. Please identify one person to then report just one (or two) of your responses with the larger group.
- HURST - SUMMARIZE GROUP REPORTS 10 minutes Use stories of Foundation work to demonstrate local and global achievements. Tug at the heartstrings.... Explain the SHARE system and connection to District Grants for local projects Giving is a joy! Giving to Rotary is giving to a charity you are connected to. Foundation Recognition Points lets us honor others: family, community leaders, friends. There is capacity to support both local foundations, other charities as well as The Rotary Foundation Currently, The Rotary Foundation far exceeds the benchmarks that independent charity watchdogs, such as Charity Navigator and the Wise Giving Alliance, view as a measure of high efficiency. Our new grant model’s emphasis on evaluation and measurability will help us to better document the true level of our impact and we expect that independent rating agencies will continue to give us high marks.
- SAVILLE 8-10 minutes Now, I invite you to return to your table discussions, and gather reasons why some Rotary members don’t give to The Rotary Foundation. Some common issues are: I only want to support projects in my local community. I only want to give to my club’s foundation. I don’t want to “buy” a Paul Harris Fellowship. It should be a recognition of serving, not of giving. I don’t understand how my gift works.
- SAVILLE 10-15 minutes Now, with your list of objections, please take about 10-15 minutes and begin to develop responses to address these objections. Again, please identify one person to then report just one (or two) of your objections and a response, with the larger group. NOTE: For groups that work fast, suggest they take one example and have each member practice a response with help from their group. (RRFCs possibly seated or available to each group to assist)
- DAS - SUMMARIZE GROUP REPORTS 10 minutes Real objections are emotions, issues or personal experiences that can be addressed: Clarify the objection to make sure you understand it. Do this by repeating it as a question, then correcting it with facts as gently as possible. Listen for the “hidden” objection and try to overcome it. Do not mistake questions for objections. Meet the objection, but never beat it down. Winning arguments does not raise money and may lose a friend; Minimize the impact of the objection by emphasizing the greater good or big picture. (i.e., with their help, the many people’s lives will be improved for the better); Try to gain a neutral position. Ask if the objection will keep the prospect from giving. Summarize graciously and move on. Remember, people give to people for causes. An individual will become a donor as much because of your own sincerity and conviction as because of his or her genuine interest in Rotary’s work.
- DAS 5 minutes Reinforce ease of giving online – fast, secure and most economical for the Foundation in terms of processing. Donors can give in any of 14 currencies, while preserving local tax benefits in most cases. For example, as Australian Rotarian can donate via Rotary.org in Australian dollars and receive a tax receipt from The Australian Rotary Foundation Trust. SPEAKERS NOTE: Rotary’s website accepts contributions in the following currencies: Argentine pesos (ARS), Australian dollars (AUD), British pounds (GBP), Brazilian Real, Canadian dollars (CAD), Danish krone (DKK), euros (EUR), Japanese yen (JPY), New Zealand dollars (NZD), Norwegian krone (NOK), South African rand (ZAR), Swedish kronor (SEK), Swiss francs (CHF), and United States dollars (USD). Work is currently underway to offer an Indian Rupee and Korean Won solution as well.
- HURST 5 minutes Discussion about ‘friendly competition’ and First Class imitative as a driver for participation in giving Rotary Direct, Rotary’s recurring giving program, provides a safe, secure, and easy way to support our Rotary Foundation. It allows the Foundation to process a recurring contribution by charging a credit or debit card at the amount and frequency that are most convenient for you. A terrific strategy to help member spread out their giving over the course of the year while ensuring they fulfill their EREY, Sustaining Member or even Paul Harris Society commitment.
- HURST 5 minutes Paul Harris Society overview: The Paul Harris Society (PHS) recognizes Rotary members and friends of The Rotary Foundation who contribute US$1,000 or more each year to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or approved Foundation global grants. This recognition was administered by districts until the Paul Harris Society became an official Rotary Foundation recognition program in July 2013. Using Rotary’s monthly giving program, individuals who choose to contribute just $85 per month may join the Paul Harris Society. For those who’d like to learn more about this recognition program, I invite you to attend tomorrow’s workshop: Establishing and Maintaining a Successful Paul Harris Society Tuesday, 3 June, 15:30-17:00 ANZ Stadium East, Boulevard Lounge North (Level 4) An international group of panelists will discuss what the Paul Harris Society is, what has changed since it became an official Foundation recognition program and practical tips for districts to increase membership.
- SAVILLE - Final recap of resources and best practices 5 minutes For those who prefer not to give online, there are a number of other ways to give: Contribution Form Contact Rotary office near you Mail/Fax/Wire Rotary Support Center (Contact.Center@rotary.org) and the RI office that serve your region can take contributions via phone as well as help walk through the contribution process for those in need! There are also other terrific resources to help highlight the importance of giving, to tell stories of Foundation beneficiaries, address financial questions. Much of these can be found on rotary.org, but there are also very capable staff at Rotary World Headquarters and in its regional offices; and volunteers within each Rotary district and zone to support you.
