Understanding emotions is the ability to predict
emotional reactions and understand how emotions
progress.

An example: 
Robert has been working long hours on a new project, but
he feels that his boss David doesn’t value what he does.
David has cancelled several meetings with Robert, stands
him up, and is difficult to get a hold of when Robert needs
to make a decision.

Robert’s frustration gradually increases until he’s
resentful, then angry, then furious. Finally, he applies for a
transfer to another group. David is astonished by this
news. He knew Robert was dissatisfied – he’d mentioned
it here and there – but he had no idea Robert’s emotions
would escalate if he never addressed the issue.

Higher emotional intelligence would’ve served David
better in this example. With it, he would’ve
understood that Robert’s frustration would eventually
grow, and he’d be better positioned to understand
why.

David also would've been able to predict how the situation
might improve or worsen based on his own actions. With
this knowledge, he could’ve chosen to empathise with
Robert and address his concerns, thereby keeping a
valuable team member in his group.

"CAUSE & EFFECT"
It's essential to always be aware of the cause of your present
emotions. If you find yourself angry in the workplace, why? Did
someone say something offensive? Were your views dismissed
in a recent meeting? Make a habit of identifying the cause &
effect relationship between your circumstances and emotions.

"REFLECT"
Once you've developed a habit for identifying the cause & effect,
spend time reflecting on your emotions. Why exactly did a
certain situation make you feel a certain way? What did it trigger
for you? Can the situation be avoided in the future? If not, how
might you be able to better manage your reaction next time?

"TRACK FORWARD"
Now do the previous two exercises but with regard to others.
Consider a time when a team member was angry. What caused
it? Why did they react that way? Now track forward, imagining an
upcoming event. How are they likely to feel and react? What can
you do to avoid that?

"VOCABULARY"
Start with each emotion and find a word that describes a low level of
that feeling, a moderate level and a high level. For example: pleased,
happy, ecstatic. Then build on those lists by adding more words.
Practice using them to describe how you feel. Over time you will
develop the ability to predict how emotional states progress.

When you’re able to understand emotions, you'll position yourself
to better empathise with how people feel, and you'll also make
accurate predictions about how they'll react to situations -- both
valuable skills to have in the workplace

WWW.SHAPINGCHANGE.COM.AU HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS SKILL #3 An example:  Robert has been working long hours on a new project, but he feels that his boss David doesn’t value what he does. David has cancelled several meetings with Robert, stands him up, and is difficult to get a hold of when Robert needs to make a decision.
  • 5. WWW.SHAPINGCHANGE.COM.AU HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS SKILL #3 Robert’s frustration gradually increases until he’s resentful, then angry, then furious. Finally, he applies for a transfer to another group. David is astonished by this news. He knew Robert was dissatisfied – he’d mentioned it here and there – but he had no idea Robert’s emotions would escalate if he never addressed the issue.
  • 6. WWW.SHAPINGCHANGE.COM.AU HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS SKILL #3 Higher emotional intelligence would’ve served David better in this example. With it, he would’ve understood that Robert’s frustration would eventually grow, and he’d be better positioned to understand why.

WWW.SHAPINGCHANGE.COM.AU HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS SKILL #3 David also would've been able to predict how the situation might improve or worsen based on his own actions. With this knowledge, he could’ve chosen to empathise with Robert and address his concerns, thereby keeping a valuable team member in his group.

If you find yourself angry in the workplace, why? Did someone say something offensive? Were your views dismissed in a recent meeting? Make a habit of identifying the cause & effect relationship between your circumstances and emotions.

WWW.SHAPINGCHANGE.COM.AU HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS SKILL #3 "REFLECT" Once you've developed a habit for identifying the cause & effect, spend time reflecting on your emotions. Why exactly did a certain situation make you feel a certain way? What did it trigger for you? Can the situation be avoided in the future? If not, how might you be able to better manage your reaction next time?
  • 11. WWW.SHAPINGCHANGE.COM.AU HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS SKILL #3 "TRACK FORWARD" Now do the previous two exercises but with regard to others. Consider a time when a team member was angry. What caused it? Why did they react that way? Now track forward, imagining an upcoming event. How are they likely to feel and react? What can you do to avoid that?

WWW.SHAPINGCHANGE.COM.AU HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS SKILL #3 "VOCABULARY" Start with each emotion and find a word that describes a low level of that feeling, a moderate level and a high level. For example: pleased, happy, ecstatic. Then build on those lists by adding more words. Practice using them to describe how you feel. Over time you will develop the ability to predict how emotional states progress.
