I was delighted to see that I nearly made $5000 in royalties from my video courses on the online learning platform Udemy last month (September 2014), especially as it’s a passive income stream.
But there's a right way and a wrong way to work with Udemy. I had to learn lots about their commission structure and their discounting practices.
Don’t discount Udemy!
I’m not saying that Udemy is going to be right for everyone. But if you can make video, have a story to tell and techniques to teach, Udemy could be the right fit for you.
With Udemy you can build a reputation amongst a targeted group of people who are prepared to spend money on content. With Udemy you are exposed to a new audience who may be minded to go to your website and sign up for your mailing list. Oh, and you can make money with Udemy.
You can do it!
You can sell courses and increase your following on Udemy. Just don’t get hung up on their commission structure and leave the pricing to them.
6. The discounts can be rather extreme –
you maybe offered a $999 course for $9 for
example.
7. People argue that Udemy customers are now
trained to only pay for courses at a reduction.

9. 1.
Price your course high!
Because of the
discounting, most
instructors price courses
at around $100. This is
clearly a very high price
for a two to three hour
course. But it makes the
discounted price closer
to $10-29 which is
reasonable.
