2. What is Open-access publishing
• Open-access publishing is the provision of free online access to
quality scholarly material that can be defined as “open domain,”
meaning publicly supported research information, and “open access,”
so that it is copyrighted to be freely available scholarly material.
• One of the most important advantages of open access is that it
increases the visibility and reuse of academic research results.

Open Archives Initiative, the Budapest Open Access Initiative, Scholarly
Publishing and Resources Coalition, and Free Online Scholarship, as well as the
initiatives undertaken by ICSU(International Council for Science), UNESCO
(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), and CODATA
(Committee on Data for Science and Technology).

7. Open access publishing types
Typically, journals publish articles under one of three main types of open access models:
• The green open access model, published articles are made freely available in some form and at
some time after publication, and the publisher retains the copyright. It involves publishing in a
traditional subscription journal as usual, but articles are also 'self-archived' in a source
(institutional or external subject-based repository) and usually made available after
an prohibition period set by the publisher.
• The gold open access model, the journal makes the final version of the published article freely
available at the time of publication and authors retain the copyright, meaning that they are free to
reuse the content appropriately without needing to first obtain permission.
• Platinum open access (also known as diamond open access), articles are made freely available
at the time of publication as in gold open access; however, the authors do not pay an article
processing charge (APC) to publish. Instead, the publishing costs are paid in other ways, for
example by an institution or society.
