Babar is a research project in the field of Artificial Intelligence. It aims to bridge together Neural AI and Symbolic AI. As such it is implemented in three different programming languages: Clojure, Python and CLOS. The Clojure component (Clobar) implements the graphical user interface to Babar. Examples of the Clojure Hiccup library and interfacing Clojure to Javascript will be presented. The Python module (Pybar) implements the web crawling and scraping and the Neural Networks aspect of Babar. The Word Embedding and and LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) components of Pybar will be described in detail. Finally the Common Lisp module (Lispbar) implements the Symbolic AI aspect of Babar. This latter includes an English Language Parser and Semantic Networks implemented as an in-memory Hypergraph. We will present each of these components and target individual aspects with code examples. Specifically we will first present the web developments and Neural Networks components. Then the English Language parser will be examined in detail. We will also present the knowledge extraction aspect and bridge this with the Neural Network component. Ultimately we will argue what can be termed "Neural AI" and "Symbolic AI" are at not at odds with each other but rather complement each other. In summary Artificial Intelligence is not a question of "brain" or "mind", but rather a question of "brain" and "mind".

Remember the old days - when your software stack was simple to understand and requirements were less demanding? With modern systems distributed microservices talk to each other all the time over the network. Cloud deployments mean a huge variance in the type of hardware that you deploy to. Everyone wants to understand what their application is really doing in production, but this information is normally invisible to developers. Profilers tell you what code your application is running but few developers profile and mostly on their development environments. Thankfully production profiling is now a practical reality that can help you solve and avoid performance problems. Profiling in development can be problematic because it’s rare that you have a realistic workload or performance test for your system. Even if you’ve got accurate perf tests maintaining these and validating that they represent production systems is hugely time consuming and hard. Not only that but often the hardware and operating system that you run in production are different from your development environment. This pragmatic talk will help you understand the ins and outs of profiling in a production system. You’ll learn about different techniques and approaches that help you understand what’s really happening with your system. This helps you to solve new performance problems, regressions and undertake capacity planning exercises.

Generics are one of the most complex features of Java. They are often poorly understood and lead to confusing errors. Unfortunately, it won’t get easier. Java 10, release planned for 2018, extends Generics. It’s now time to understand generics or risk being left behind. We start by stepping back into the halcyon days of 2004 and explain why generics were introduced in the first place back. We also explain why Java’s implementation is unique compared to similar features in other programming languages. Then we travel to the present to explaining how to make effective use of Generics. We then explore various entertaining code examples and puzzlers of how Generics are used today. Finally, this talk sheds light on the planned changes in Java 10 with practical code examples and related ideas from other programming languages. For example, Java 8 recently introduced new features (lambda expressions and method references) and APIs (Streams, Optional and CompletableFutures) inspired from functional ideas such as first-class functions, composition and immutability. However, what does this mean for my existing codebase? In this talk we show how you can refactor your traditional object-oriented Java to using FP features and APIs from Java 8 in a beneficial manner. We will discuss: * How to adapt to requirement changes using first-class functions * How you can enhance code reusability using currying * How you can make your code more robust by favouring immutability over mutability * How you can design better APIs and reduce unintended null pointer exceptions using an optional data type

For many developers architecture and functional programming are at odds with each other: they don’t know how their existing tricks of the trade convert into functional design. This problem becomes worse as hybrid languages such as Java 8 or Scala become common. We’ll talk about how functional programming helps you implement the SOLID principles, and how a functional mindset can actually help you achieve cleaner and simpler OO design.

tl;dr - How will the everyday developer cope with Java 8’s Language changes? Java 8 will ship with a powerful new abstraction - Lambda Expressions (aka Closures) and a completely retooled set of Collections libraries. In addition interfaces have changed through the addition of default and static methods. The ongoing debate as to whether Java should include such language changes has resulted in many vocal opinions being espoused. Sadly few of these opinions have been backed up by practical experimentation and experience. - Are these opinions just myths? - What mistakes does a developer make? - Can a ‘blue collar’ Java Developer cope with functional programming? - Can we avoid these mistakes in future? In London, we’ve been running a series of hackdays trying out Lambda Expressions as part of the Adopt-a-JSR program and have been recording and analysing the results. Huge topics of mailing list discussion have been almost entirely irrelevant problems to developers, and some issues which barely got any coverage at all have proved to be a consistent thorn in people’s side.

Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?
