Kolkata Metro becomes India's first metro train to run under river
• On 12 April 2023, the Kolkata Metro reached Howrah from
Kolkata through a river tunnel for the first time in India, carrying
only officers and engineers. This tunnel is built across the
Hooghly River.
• Services on this route of Kolkata Metro will start from this year
itself. Once the services start, Howrah will become the country's
deepest metro station (33 meters below the surface).

Ratnakar Patnaik appointed as new Chief Investment Officer of LIC
• On 11 April 2023 Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)
appointed Ratnakar Patnaik as its new Chief Investment
Officer.
• Patnaik has replaced PR Mishra on this post. Earlier, Patnaik had
joined LIC in September 1990 as a direct recruit officer.

India ranked 77th in the world's 'Most Criminal Countries' ranking
• World of Statistics released the ranking of the world's "most criminal
countries" in which India is ranked 77th, while the US is at 55th and
the UK at 65th.
• As per the ranking, Venezuela has been ranked first as the most
criminal country, followed by Papua New Guinea in second place and
South Africa in third place.
• Turkey, Germany and Japan are among the least criminal
countries, ranked 92nd, 100th and 135th respectively.

Maharashtra government announces Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's
birth anniversary as 'Swatantraveer Gaurav Din'
• On 11 April, the Maharashtra government declared 28 May, the birth
anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, as 'Swatantraveer Gaurav
Diwas'.
• Various programs will be organised to promote and propagate the
thoughts and works of Veer Savarkar on Swatantraveer Gaurav Divas.
• It aims to highlight Savarkar's contribution to India's independence
movement, his ideology and his campaigns for social reforms and the
eradication of untouchability.

A new Uranium Isotope 'Uranium-241' discovered
• A team of nuclear physicists of Japan has discovered a previously
unknown uranium isotope with atomic number 92 and mass 241.
• The study has been published in the journal Physical Review Letters
and the new isotope has been named Uranium-241.

• Uranium is a naturally occurring chemical element with the symbol U
and atomic number 92.
• It is a heavy metal that is radioactive and is found in small amounts in
rocks and soil around the world.
• Uranium has many isotopes, which are atoms that have the same
number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
• Uranium has three isotopes in its natural state, U-234, U-235 and U-
238.
• Other isotopes that are not found in natural uranium are U-232, U-233,
U-236, and U-237.

Solar Energy Corporation of India gets 'Miniratna Category-I' status
• Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) has been accorded
the status of Miniratna Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise
(CPSE) on10th April, 2023.
• Its formal announcement has been issued by the Ministry of New and
Renewable Energy, Government of India.
• SECI has achieved this feat in a short span of time due to its consistent
performance, mobility and flexibility in operations.
• It is making steady progress towards achieving the Prime Minister's
'Panchamrit' goals and achieving 500 GW non-fossil fuel based non-
fossil fuel based capacity by 2030.

• It is a Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the
administrative control of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy
(MNRE), set up on 20th Sept, 2011.

Sanjeevani Project launched by the Government of Himachal Pradesh
• To support small dairy farmers and cattle rearers, the state
government launched a project called Sanjeevani on April 9 to
enhance their livelihood.
• The Sanjeevani project uses telemedicine and technology to provide
convenient and high-quality livestock care services to farmers'
doorsteps, potentially preventing outbreaks and reducing turnaround
time for services.
• The Animal Husbandry Department of Himachal Pradesh collaborated
with Bharat Financial Inclusion Limited (BFIL) for the National Animal
Disease Control Programme-Mobile Veterinary Van (NADCP-AHD-
MVU) project.

International Day of Human Space Flight: 12 April
• The International Day of Human Space Flight is observed every year
on 12 April.
• The United Nations General Assembly designated 12 April as the
International Day of Human Space Flight through a resolution passed
on 7 April 2011.
• The day is celebrated in honour of Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut,
the first human to orbit the Earth on April 12, 1961.
• On June 16, 1963, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to
orbit the Earth aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft.
• On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human to step on
the surface of the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission.

Justice Apresh Kumar Singh appointed as new Chief Justice of Tripura
High Court
• On 11th April 2023, Justice Apresh Kumar Singh was appointed as the
new Chief Justice of Tripura High Court by the Central Government.
• Apresh Kumar replaced Justice T Amarnath Goud, who was serving as
the Acting Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court from November 2022.
• The Tripura High Court was established on 23 March 2013 following an
amendment to the Constitution of India and the North-Eastern Areas
Act of 1971.

What are the rules for a national party?
• A party is granted the status of a national party based on fulfilling at least
one of the three criteria.
• First: The party must have secured at least 6% of the total votes in four or
more states.
• Second: The party must have won at least 2% of the total seats in the Lok
Sabha (meaning 11 seats) from at least three states. The seats won should
be from different states.
• Third: The party must have been recognized as a state party in at least four
states.

According to the latest tiger census data in 2022, the number of
tigers in India has increased to 3,167
• According to the latest tiger census data released by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi, the number of tigers in India is set to
reach 3,167 in 2022.
• This figure shows a significant increase from the previous census
figures of 1,411 in 2006, 1,706 in 2010, 2,226 in 2014 and 2,967 in
2018.
• The Prime Minister launched the 'International Big Cat Alliance' to
mark the completion of 50 years of 'Project Tiger'.
• The Prime Minister also released a booklet titled 'Amrit Kaal Ka Tiger
Vision', which outlines the vision for tiger conservation over the next
25 years.

• Project Tiger was started in 1973 by the Union Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
• The initial reserves covered under Project Tiger were Jim Corbett,
Manas, Ranthambore, Simlipal, Bandipur, Palamu, Sundarbans,
Melghata and Kanha National Parks.
The top states with the highest population of tigers in India are:

World Homeopathy Day: 10 April
• World Homeopathy Day is observed every year on 10th April to
mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel
Hahnemann, the founder of Homeopathy.
• The Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH) under
the Ministry of AYUSH organized a scientific conference on the
occasion in New Delhi.
• The conference was inaugurated by Vice President Jagdeep
Dhankhar and its theme is 'Homoe Parivar - Universal Health,
One Health, One Family'.

• Samuel Hahnemann was born in Paris on 10 April 1755 and was a
renowned physician and scholar.
• AYUSH is the abbreviation of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani,
Siddha and Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Society and aims to promote
education and research of the above.

Amit Shah launches Vibrant Village program at Kibithu border village
in Arunachal Pradesh
• Union Home Minister and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on 10 April
launched the 'Vibrant Villages Programme' at Kibithu, a border village
in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh.
• 'Vibrant Village Programme' approved by the government with a
central component of Rs 4800 crore including Rs 2500 crore specifically
for road connectivity for the financial years 2022-23 to 2025-26.
• Under the programme, 2967 villages in 46 blocks of 19 districts along
the northern border in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim,
Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of
Ladakh were identified for comprehensive development.

'Subby' Subramaniam appointed Warrant Officer of UK's Royal Air
Force (RAF)
• Indian-origin man Subby Subramaniam has been commissioned as a
Warrant Officer in the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom in April
2023.
• Subramaniam will take over from Warrant Officer Jake Alpert, who
previously held the role.

specialises in aerial warfare and space operations.
• It was established on April 1, 1918, at the end of World War I. At that

National Safe Motherhood Day: 11 April
• National Safe Motherhood Day is observed every year on 11 April. Its
main objective is to raise awareness about maternal health, the need
for proper medical care during pregnancy and postpartum.
• In 2003, the Government of India declared 11 April as the National
Safe Motherhood Day through the efforts of the White Ribbon
Alliance India (WRAI) and the day was chosen to coincide with
the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, a renowned social reformer.
