Automated Systems
What is an Automated System? An Automated System removes the need for people involvement in every step of machine operation. Computer technology controls the process by continually sending instructions to the monitors and switches in the equipment to operate it correctly An automated system is any system where an input is provided and a machine or computer carries out a process that produces an output.

The Automated System in Commerce ?
Video Clip on Automated Systems Title: Automated Systems Duration: 10 min Description: Automated Systems at a variety of different companies and organisations such as Aberdeen Traffic Control Systems, Department of Informatics at Edinburgh University, Glasgow Science Centre, Linn Systems and Torness Nuclear Power Station Keywords: robots, sensor, speed, hazardous environment Video Automated System
Advantages of Automated Systems Speed Repetition Accuracy Safety Efficiency Adaptability

Introduction of Robotics as an Automated System Stationary Robots These are usually "robot arms" that are fixed in one place. The different joints of a robot arm can all move. A computer sends signals to motors placed in the robot arm that make the different parts move. Stationary robots are used in factories to weld, move, paint or lift parts. Usually the tool on the end of the robot arm can be changed so that it can be used for different tasks.
Stationary Robots Wrist Elbow Tool Shoulder Waist
Stationary Robot (Video clip ) Title: Stationary Robot Duration: 1 min Description: Stationary Robot (Kuka Robot arms, the most widely used in factories in the world. Building furniture) Keywords: elbow, wrist, gripper Video Stationary Robot
Mobile Robots Robots that move around (usually on wheels, tracks or on legs) are mobile. In factories these can be used to move components to different parts of the factory. To move around a factory or other building special guidance systems can be used Mobile robots are often used in dangerous places. There are mobile robots that have been sent to planets where humans could not survive, underwater, into the Antarctica and into areas contaminated by nuclear radiation.

  1. For example, you may have used a vending machine. You will have put money in and entered a code for the item you wish to buy. These are the inputs. The computer carries out a process of taking the code, working out what the user wants to buy, checking you have put in enough money and then making the parts move that make the item release. Your output is the item you have bought and your change
  2. washing machines Microwave ovenmobile phones camera
  3. Car factory Control traffic lightGuiding aircraft
  4. Speed - They can process information much more quickly than humans. This means they are good for controlling machinery that might ned to be adjusted instantly.Repetition - Automated systems can do the same task over and over again without getting bored, needing breaks or making mistakes.Accuracy - They can do very detailed work and follow precise instructions without error.Safety - Automated systems can work in places where it would be unsafe to put a human, for example, in a nuclear power plant, under water or in space.Efficiency - They get more done than humans but cost less to operate. This is because the do need breaks, wages, holidays, canteens, heating and lighting. The quality of the work done is always of the same standard being materials are not wasted due to human error.Adaptability - Automated systems can be reprogrammed to do different tasks. For example, a robot that was used to make one type of car could be reprogrammed to work with a new model or be used to spray paint a car instead of being used to weld parts together
  5. The introduction of automated systems have had a huge effect on the world we live in over the last 30 years. Many jobs that your grandparents would have done are now done by automated systems. When a company introduce an automated system what happens to the existing workers? Many workers will lose thier jobs. An automated system can work non-stop producing high quality work with no errors. Therefore workers are not required. Some workers will be given training to do new jobs operating and maintaining automated systems. At home automated systems have meant that people have much more leisure time. Can you imagine how long it took your great grandmother to wash and dry clothes by hand? Now you just load clothes in the washing machine or dryer and go and do something else
