- Hallo, ontzettend bedankt voor de mogelijkheid om jullie iets te mogen vertellen over Iconclass – het allerbeste classificatiesysteem voor onderwerpen van kunstwerken en afbeeldingen uit de westerse cultuur van voor 1800! Gelukkig ben ik niet bij een etnografisch museum beland, want dan hadden we weinig om over te praten. Kennen jullie Iconclass al trouwens? Ik ben hier om jullie de achtergrond -en werking van dit systeem uit te leggen. Ik heb al een aantal jaar aan de AAT gewerkt voordat ik ook iconclass onder mijn hoede kreeg. Door mijn ervaring met meerdere terminologieën kan ik gemakkelijker het onderscheid benoemen en uitleggen welke waar het meeste nut heeft. Wie kent AAT? Iconclass is een systeem dat nog niet zo gemakkelijk te doorgronden is. Maar dat is ook niet gek, het gaat over het duiden van onderwerpen en elementen in de kunst die misschien honderden jaren geleden gemeengoed waren maar heden ten dage toch een stuk minder. Daarbij is het gemaakt vanuit een kunsthistorische traditie van beeldbeschrijving die we niet allemaal kennen. Ik kan dit beamen omdat ik niet als kunsthistoricus ben opgeleid. Ook mijn bijbelvastheid en parate kennis van de klassieke oudheid is eigenlijk niet heel groot. Maar ik heb wel geleerd om goed te zoeken en dat helpt al heel wat! Om een schilderij - vooral van vóór 1800 - optimaal te kunnen waarderen, is een begrip van het afgebeelde vaak even belangrijk als een kennis van de stijl, vooral ook omdat vele afbeeldingen ook een symbolische betekenis hebben. De iconografische beeldbeschrijving houdt zich hiermee bezig. Feit blijft dat er geen ander systeem is waarmee deze specifieke kunsthistorische iconografie gestructureerd beschreven kan worden. Daarbij verwijst een Iconclass code ook naar veel meer dan alleen het aangeduide onderwerp. Ik ga mijn best doen om jullie zo goed mogelijk in te wijden. En het nut van iconclass annotatie voor jullie collectie ontsluiting te bewijzen. Daartoe gaan we ook een aantal werken uit de Twenthe collectie onder de loep nemen. - De workshop vanmiddag zal bestaan uit… Vragen mogen te allen tijden worden gesteld, alleen wil ik wel proberen niet te ver uit te wijden, om zo de voortgang er wat in te houden.
- Iconclass is hosted and maintained by RKD, the Netherlands Institute for Art History. We have the largest collection of documentation on Dutch art from the Middle Ages till now. It’s collections consist of documentation comprising millions of images, an extensive library, and archives from artists, designers and historians. We have very little original art work. The RKD works together with national and international partners in research and development considering Art History in particular the Dutch Art and it’s impact. We are housed in the building of the Royal Library, but we will be moving out to a new building in 2018 because of renovations.
- The art documentation is an important collection of the RKD, Estimates are that there are up to 5 million images stored in the green boxes. The RKD is planning to digitise this collection including metadata and continue working on it in a digital environment. The RKD’s 7 databases/digital repositories that are made accessible through our relatively new website RKDexplore that was launched in 2014. Our vocabularies are RKDartists, Iconclass and Dutch AAT. Image collection (not digital) indexed with iconclass. Holds the image collections of University of Leiden en VU University Amsterdam. Iconography book collection indexed with Iconclass. We want to digitise our entire image documentation including metadata, 5 million images! Perhaps trough use of a scanning street. Digital collection and catalogue: RKDexplore Images: 40.000 artwork records with iconclass notations. At the moment we use Iconclass only for subjects from Mythology and Biblical scenes. Using ‘only’ 6000 different codes (of the 28.000 available)
- Voor kunstbeherende instellingen onmisbare standaarden, al zeg ik zelf. Daarbij is het RKD een natuurlijke samenwerkingspartner voor musea op het gebied van kunsthistische onderzoek en documenteren. These are our controlled vocabularies. RKDartists& is a ‘name authority file’ with biographic details about Dutch and foreign artists (in the broadest sense of the word) from around 1200 to the present. documentation. The AAT-Ned or Dutch AAT is a controlled vocabulary, a thesaurus, with terminology about material culture, so the scope is broader than just Art and Architecture subjects. It is a translation and in an way extended version of the Getty AAT. Extended in the sense that AAT-Ned also hosts several thousand Dutch candidate concepts that are used in the hertitage field. It’s been in the RKD’s portfolio from 1994 onwards. It’s a widely used standard in the Dutch Museum Sector. And we have Iconclass the multilingual classification system designed for art and iconography. 28000 onderwerpen. En oneindig veel variaties daarop te maken. - De AAT is belangrijke internationale standaard thesaurus op het gebied van de materiele cultuur. Van oorsprong gericht op het beschrijven van een afbeeldingen in een bibliotheek (daarom is het meervoud hier de voorkeursterm, maar je kan als gebruiker ook enkelvoud, of zelf een andere equivalent kiezen), toen lange tijd gericht op het beschrijven van objecten in museale collecties, nu steeds breder en internationaler georiënteerde inhoud. Generiek betekent kort gezegd ‘karakteriseerbaar uniek concept’ maar geen eigennamen van unieke, dus slechts eenmaal voorkomende objecten, gebeurtenissen en personen. Daarom is Iconclass ook een onontbeerlijke toevoeging aan de standaarden nodig voor de beschrijving. Iconclass heeft inhoud die niet in de AAT staat en vice versa. Ze zijn complementair bij het beschrijven van kunstwerken.

- Voorbeeld van AAT concepten bij objectbeschrijving. De termen om formele elementen van een kunstwerkrecord te benoemen kun je in de AAT vinden. Het onderwerp, diepere betekenis kun je benoemen met iconclass. Er is overigens wel overlap tussen de inhoud van de twee sytemen maar Iconclass kun je niet als standaard termenlijst gebruiken in een regulier collectiemanagement systeem. Daar is het op dat gebied ook niet precies en uitgebreid genoeg voor. Voor het beschrijven van elementen die je op een voorstelling kunt zien echter, is het erg geschikt. Dus onderwerpstrefwoorden.
- Here we see a simplified cloud representation of the RKD vocabularies. The red ones are delivering collection data to Europeana (but maybe more). Now, considering connecting knowledge, the hope on the horizon lies with the promise of LOD. It provides a method for connecting concepts between knowledge systems. The only problem is that this cannot be achieved automatically. We, the domain experts and data experts, have to make the connections ourselves first. It might be impossible to connect everything to everything. But there is already a lot to be gained if parts of the terminologies between datasets are mapped. So We have to start somewhere.

Hij schildert niet alleen gezellig schaatsende paartjes, maar ook ongelukken, vechtpartijen en dronkenschap, zoals in de herberg rechts. Maar achter de amusante en ogenschijnlijk oppervlakkige taferelen gaat een subtiele verwijzing naar de vergankelijkheid schuil. De spartelende man in het wak is een veelgebruikt motief om de kijker te herinneren aan de tijdelijkheid van het bestaan. Hoewel hulp nabij is - er komt een man met een tak aangesneld - is het niet zeker of de drenkeling zal overleven.
- What is Iconclass? The Iconclass system is one of the largest classification system for cultural content and possibly the largest for visual arts content. Described by Wikipedia as: ‘a highly complex way of classifying the content of images’, unfortunately, the system is often perceived this way. More on this later. Iconclass was developed by Henri van de Waal (1910-1972), Professor of Art History at the University of Leiden (photo). In 1950, the RKD began its collaboration with Henri van de Waal on the development of Iconclass, with the publication of mounted and annotated photographs of Dutch works of art, known as DIAL (Decimal Index of the Art of the Low Countries). Published 1973 and 1985 in book form by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), of which Van de Waal was a member. The publication was followed by the development of several computerized editions of Iconclass by the University of Utrecht in the years 1990 to 2001. Published online in 2004 and updated in 2009 in partnership with RKD. RKD took over the role as maintaining institute from the Academy of Arts and Sciences.
- But first a few words about the branches of art history it adresses. Iconography is the study of symbols depicted in a work of art. Traditionally, these symbols derive from a readily recognizable, common currency of cultural or religious experience. For instance, in Western culture, a cross is a familiar shorthand symbol for Christianity and an obelisk is a generally understood emblem of dominance. Iconology is the study of the meaning contained within the symbols in a particular work of art. Not everyone makes the distinction between these two term anymore. Melencolia I is a famous 1514 engraving by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer. It is an allegorical composition which has been the subject of many interpretations. The work has been the subject of more modern interpretation than almost any other print. I won’t go into all of them here. But a few of them are: The tools of geometry and architecture surround the figure, unused tools, The 4 × 4 magic square, with the two middle cells of the bottom row giving the date of the engraving: The hourglass showing time running out The empty scale (balance) The winged figure of genius. The list goes on. An autobiographical interpretation of Melencolia I has been suggested by several historians. Erwin Panofsky was probably correct in considering this fantastic image the spiritual self-portrait of Dürer. When describing and cataloging this type of work as an Art Historian, you need a very specific list of keywords and phrases, preferably from a controlled list. This is where Iconclass comes in.
- Iconclass is a multilingual classification system for cultural content. It is a hierarchically ordered collection of definitions of objects, people, events and abstract ideas that serve as the subject of an image. Art historians, researchers and curators use it to describe, classify and examine the subject of images represented in various media such as paintings, drawings and photographs. To sum up a the key elements. Classification system for Iconographical topics of 28,000 hierarchically ordered definitions. It’s consists of Alfa-numerical codes with text correlates in several languages. It’s hierarchically ordered so it works like a thesaurus. It has 14.000 keywords linked to the subjects, that can help guide the user to the subject he is looking for. It’s multi-lingual, now available in five languages and Portuegese, Spanish Polish and Chinese being worked on. These translations have mostly been conducted by projects in other countries and not funded by a Dutch Institute. It shows the intrinsic value of the system. It has been published as LOD in RDF and Json and the concepts can be found online though URI’s like http://iconclass.org/52D1. You can query using the API or download the full set of raw data.
- The Iconclass browser lets you do simple and sophisticated keyword searches, and browse the Iconclass schedules, It starts out pretty straight foward. Like the Dewey Decimal Classification system, it has 10 main "divisions" or points of entry. 28,000 hierarchically ordered definitions. Each definition consists of an alphanumeric classification code (notation) and the description of the iconographic subject (textual correlate).
- Within each division of Iconclass, definitions are organized according to a logic of increasing specificity. A main division is divided further into a maximum of nine subdivisions by adding a second digit to the right of the first one. Division 2 Nature, for example, is subdivided in the following way.
- The third level of specificity is attained by adding a letter in upper case. Take a look, for example, at the subdivisions of 25 earth, world as a celestial body:25I is a typical Art historical classification.
- From the letter(s) onward, all subsequent descents in the hierarchy take place by extending the notation to the right with more digits. The following example shows the first subdivision of 25F animals: the biologists will certainly not agree to this division, but in art history it makes sense.

- So :a standard entry in the Iconclass system consists of a notation and its textual correlate. The Iconclass system offers the user additional features to increase the accuracy of meaning of a notation in a more or less systematic way. Warning: This might be the point where the iconclass system becomes ‘Highly complex’. Take a look at the following image and its Iconclass notations.
- Other typical (or a-typical) subjects in iconclass.
- Cesare Ripa was a 16th-century Italian aesthetician and author of the Iconologia, an influential emblem book. The picture shows the title page of a Dutch translation which was published in 1644 in Amsterdam. The notion that painting and literature are closely related - a concept already well established in the Renaissance - played an instrumental role in the arts. This idea is neatly demonstrated in the present title page, where Painting and Poetry in person flank a cartouche containing and extensive title, which is placed beneath the higher spheres where the art-loving gods Minerva, Apollo, and Mercury are seated. The Iconologia based on Egyptian, Greek and Roman emblematical representations. The book was used to give substance to qualities such as virtues, vices, passions, arts and sciences. The concepts were arranged in alphabetical order, after the fashion of the Renaissance. For each there was a verbal description of the allegorical figure proposed by Ripa to embody the concept, giving the type and color of its clothing and its varied symbolic paraphernalias, along with the reasons why these were chosen, reasons often supported by references to literature (largely classical) Dit boek, voluit geheten Iconologia overo Descrittione Dell’imagini Universali cavate dall’Antichità et da altri luoghi, uit 1603 was een zeer invloedrijk emblemataboek gebaseerd op Egyptische, Griekse en Romeinse emblemata. - The multilingual Iconclass Browser serves as a search tool that helps an indexer to find the concepts to tag an image. It can be used to establish the correct meaning of a notation. It used to connect images from RKD in the search, but this feature stopped working after we launced RKDexplore. The RKD is planning to integrate the browser as a system into the RKD explore environment in the near future. You can make lists of often used notations, and copy-paste them as a whole. When logged in as a user, you can add comments on notations and the idea is that these comments will be processed by editors of iconclass.

Door de talloze verwijzingen zijn er voor iedere voorstelling meer ingangen. Mede hierdoor is het zeer praktisch in het gebruik. Een onmisbaar boek bij het bekijken van kunst en bovendien zeer onderhoudend en informatief. Met hier en daar een tekeningetje ter verduidelijking.
