2. UNIVERSAL DESIGN
Universal Design in Learning emerges from Universal Design in
Architecture
The goal of Universal Design is to “is to maximise the learning of
students with a wide range of characteristics by applying UD
principles to all aspects of instruction” (Burgstahler)
In the past, American schools have had fixed curriculum;
Universal Design was created to address this problem.
3. UNIVERSAL DESIGN CONTINUED
Education should be designed for all students not just some; this
includes students with disabilities
If we change our curriculum less students will be labeled as
“disabled” and more will be considered successful
Instructional strategies should take into consideration “varying
background knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in
learning and interests; and to react responsively” (Hall)
Key word in Universal Design is Options
4. PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL
DESIGN
Multiple means of Representation

2. Provide options for Language and Symbols
3. Provide options for Comprehension
6. GUIDELINES FOR MULTIPLE MEANS OF
ACTION AND EXPRESSION
1. Provide options for Physical Action
2. Provide options for expressive Skill and Fluency
3. Provide options for Executive Functions
- Need options for students to express what they know
7. GUIDELINES FOR MULTIPLE MEANS OF
ENGAGEMENT
1. Provide options for Recruiting Interest
-Something that is interesting for one student can often be distracting for another
student
2. Provide options for Sustaining Effort and Persistence
- Deep learning requires sustaining effort
