On Friday 9 September, some of the NWU-Pukke netball players
dedicated their time to play with and walk the dogs of the Potch
Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). This was an exciting afternoon for
both the dogs and the players. Like Marna Claassens, player of the
Pukke team said, they should have brought their training sneakers
with.
The players jogged with the dogs and gave them not only food but
lots of love. Claassens wanted to take her black furry friend with
her to the court, insisting that the dog could represent the Pukke
as their team mascot.
“He looked like he would fit in perfectly with the squad,” said
Claassens. “He is such a sharp, happy and fluffy dog.” It was a
rewarding experience for the players as they saw how much the
dogs appreciated their attention and love. “We enjoyed playing
and giving attention to the dogs at PAWS and to see how much
they needed it,” said Chanté Bester, captain of the Pukke team.

2. Giving back to the community plays a big role in the Pukke netball
culture. “We feel that the community is behind us and that the
little deeds like giving food and attention to the animals are our
way to say thank you,” added Bester.
The staff at PAWS were kind-hearted and friendly towards the
visitors and also participated in the fun activities outside in the
open field. “It’s a huge honour to have hosted the NWU-Puk netball
team at PAWS today. They are seen as role models in the
community of Potchefstroom and it is a privilege to be associated
with them,” said Etienne Jansen van Vuuren, manager of the PAWS
kennels.
So while University Potchefstroom mascot, Pukki, is not in any
danger of being replaced by an adorable pup; Pukke’s opponents
should be wary. A team with this much spirit and togetherness off
the court, is usually just as cohesive and determined on it.
