RE:
INTERNSHIP
OF
RACHEL
EATHERLY,
UNIVERSITY
OF
TENNESSEE
KNOXVILLE
Rachel
Eatherly
has
worked
with
us
for
four
weeks
as
an
internship
via
the
University
of
Tennessee
Knoxville
and
Massey
University
Palmerston
North.
In
her
time
with
us,
Rachel
has
engaged
in
a
project
to
investigate
the
implications
of
environmental
regulations
recently
introduced
in
one
catchment
being
applied
to
neighbouring
catchments
where
intensive
cropping
is
practiced.
This
required
her
to
develop
understanding
of
New
Zealand
resource
management
law,
the
National
Environmental
Policy
Statement
for
Freshwater
Management,
Regional
Council
environmental
planning
and
rules,
different
farm
systems
and
the
findings
of
a
Board
of
Inquiry.
We
posed
the
question,
“If
Plan
Change
6
is
applied
to
the
Heretaunga
Plains,
what
are
the
implications
for
farmers?
Are
they
aware,
are
they
able
to
cope,
and
what
could
a
small
NGO
such
as
LandWISE
do
to
help?”
Through
reading
and
research
and
face
to
face
interviews
with
farmers,
regulators,
fertiliser
representatives
and
green
NGO
representatives,
Rachel
and
a
fellow
intern
rapidly
developed
a
clear
understanding
of
the
legislation,
key
issues
and
likely
implications
for
farmers
given
certain
likely
scenarios.
Their
report
will
be
of
considerable
value
to
our
community
as
it
seeks
to
grow
its
rural
economy
and
protect
and
enhance
its
environment.
Rachel
has
been
diligent
and
professional
throughout
her
internship
and
shows
a
high
level
of
competence.
We
are
delighted
to
have
had
the
opportunity
to
work
with
her
and
would
welcome
her
back.
We
wish
her
well
with
the
remainder
of
her
studies
and
will
be
keen
to
follow
her
career
progress.
