Seed is defined as a fertilized mature ovule that contains an embryonic plant, stored food material, and a protective coat. Seed quality refers to seeds that are produced scientifically and contain varietal purity, freedom from weed seeds and other crop seeds, and have high germination and vigor as well as a safe moisture content. High quality seeds are the basic input for crop production as they improve productivity, are carriers of new technology, cut down on seed requirements, and produce high quality crops. There are different classes of quality seeds including nucleus, breeder, foundation, certified, and improved seeds which are defined by their source and intended uses.
