In 1917, a 23 year old X was hired as a French Professor at Eton College. One of his
pupils was ____ _____, who later adopts his more famous pen name. When
____ _____ wrote his famous novel some thirty years later, he sent a copy to his
teacher. Though X praises the novel, he also provided critique. Here is parts of
the letter X wrote back to ____ _____.
“I need not tell you, yet once more, how fine and how profoundly important the
book is … Within the next generation I believe that the world's rulers will
discover that infant conditioning and narco-hypnosis are more efficient, as
instruments of government, than clubs and prisons, and that the lust for power
can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their
servitude as by flogging and kicking them into obedience. In other words, I feel
that the nightmare of Y is destined to modulate into the nightmare of a world
having more resemblance to that which I imagined in Z.”
Here Y is ____ _____’s novel and Z is X’s novel. In essence, X says his novel is
better and will be true. ID all variables.

Malayalam filmmaker Salim Ahamed, made a movie X, about a poor perfume
seller whose only remaining wish in life is the Hajj pilgrimage, which he strives
hard to fulfill. This movie had been sent as India's official entry to the Academy
Awards in 2011. Salim later made a film about his experience at the Academy
Awards titled Y. Y detailed the trials and tribulations of an Indian filmmaker who
struggles to get his film noticed at the Oscars.
Based on Salim's own experiences, the film shows the protagonist, played by
Tovino Thomas, even starving because he has little money to promote his film
for the awards. The film reveals that it's not just the quality of a movie that can
ensure its performance at the awards – it's also about smart marketing and
networking, both of which require money. Y was also reported to be one of the
contenders before Gully Boy was chosen to be India’s 2019 entry for the Best
International Feature Film category in the Academy Awards.

appreciate the fine arts and wine and also breaks into song every now and then.
Several of Bob’s and Cecil’s interactions are peppered with references to

A Clockwork Orange is a dystopian black comedy novel written by English writer
Anthony Burgess. The original novel has 21 chapters in all publications, except
the US. The 21st chapter was omitted from the editions published in the United
States prior to 1986.
Burgess explained that when he first brought the book to an American
publisher, he was told that U.S. audiences would never go for the final chapter.
At the publisher's insistence, Burgess omitted the 21st chapter and ended the
book at the 20th, an ending which the publisher insisted would be more realistic
and appealing to a US audience. Even Stanley Kubrick, who adapted the novel to
a film, called chapter 21 an extra chapter and has never considered using it. In
his opinion the final chapter was unconvincing and inconsistent with the book.
What could the final chapter in the book have been about?

A custom of the sea is a custom that is said to be practiced by the officers and
crew of ships and boats in the open sea, different from maritime laws. Among
these customs is the practice of cannibalism among shipwrecked survivors, by
the drawing of lots to see who is to be killed and eaten so that the others might
survive.
R vs Dudley and Stephens case was a landmark case in 1884, when 4 people,
three of whom were Dudley, Stephens and a young cabin boy. After a few days,
due to lack of food, they killed the cabin boy, since he fell sick, and then
consumed him. This case set the precedent that necessity is not a defence to a
charge of murder, and gradually the practice was stopped.
So this case was the inspiration for a very popular movie. A story similar to this
case is told by the narrator of the movie as an ‘alternate version’ for his
journeys.

This Round has a description of the training
or body transformation that actors have
undergone, in order to portray sportspersons
in cinema. ID the actor and sportsperson
1.
X trained five days a week, four hours a day to fill the shoes of Y, but just sport
specific training was not enough for X to get into shape. In an interview, X
mentioned that they spent a lot time in the gym trying to build muscle mass. X
initially focused specifically on strengthening their legs in order to be able to
execute the different types of jumps and spins, but quickly realized that this
was not working. X further mentioned that after talking to Y about their
progress, Y told X to forget about legs and focus on core training instead, as it
would provide stability. This advice undoubtedly paid off as seen by X’s
remarkable performance on screen.
ID X and Y.
2.
X had to get into serious shape to play Y, a world champion in his time. X was
obsessed with idea of playing Y and even convinced the director to film the
movie. In order to play Y, X was required to make a monumental physical
transformation twice. To get the full experience, X actually trained alongside Y
in the ring and they fought over 1000 practice rounds. In order to prepare
himself further to take the mantle of Y on-screen, X entered in three genuine
boxing matches and won two of them.
The second part of his transformation was the weight X had to gain to
accurately portray Y. X ate his way through Italy and gained 60 pounds in a
span of 4 months.
ID X and Y
3.
When X got the role of Y, he said “I’m hoping to become his shadow. I will
follow him wherever he goes and try to pick as much as possible from him. I
hope to get some tips on _______ and _______ from the man himself. I
trained for four hours everyday. I focus on my _______ and do a lot of physio.
I’m doing better in _______ because from my childhood, I’ve had a natural
ability for it."
X did indeed learn from Y, at a long bootcamp organized in Dharmshala where
he internalized Y’s style of playing. Apart from sport specific training, X went
to the place where Y led his team to victory and even stayed with Y for a span
of 10 days in order to understand the nuances of his character.
ID X and Y.
4.
The first step for actor X to play the role of Y was to lose weight. In Y’s
profession, the lighter you are the more likely it is that you would win. X
underwent extensive physical training to transform his body for the part,
which included 16 workouts a week and dropping from 160 to 137 pounds. He
also bought an equicizer, a contraption used to simulate the real deal and
trained on that several times a week.
X said in an interview - "I did not realize what kind of athletes _______ are. I
mean, they are just warriors these guys - it's unbelievable The first time I
actually got up and tried on the actual thing, I couldn't believe it. After a
couple of minutes, my legs were noodles; I could barely stand up. It's just
unbelievable and these guys are doing it seven days a week, 52 weeks a year."
ID X and Y
5.
In order to do justice to the role of Y, X refrained from his leisurely life with
respect to food, drinks and lifestyle for over a year. X was on a strict diet in
order to gain lean muscle mass, and did both athletic training as well as
functional and resistance training.
The objective of the athletic training was twofold - to teach X how a
professional in the sport does it, and to incorporate Y’s personal quirks. This
routine including 3 major components of the sport – upper leg motion, knee
lift and push off.
This was followed by functional training aimed at strengthening the core as
well as enhancing flexibility which is of importance for the sport. This was
followed by resistance training where the focus was on both aesthetics and
well as strengthening the musculature, especially around the legs.
ID X and Y.
6.
X, for the role of Y underwent multiple phases of training and preparation for
the role. Y’s story was as much of mental strength as physical strength.
Besides going through video footages and analyzing, he began to study the art
under Angelo Dundee, who for 21 years trained Z.
For authenticity, he rarely trained with weights and did most of cardio since
these sportspersons in the 1930s did not have access to sophisticated
methods. They designed a regimen that included kayaking, swimming,
running, biking, hiking mountains, skipping rope and working a bag – all
designed to build a naturally strong (but not overly muscular) body built for
power and endurance. This enabled him to emulate Y’s physique, that was
considered to be too light for his profession. Angelo Dundee was particularly
very important since he was one of the very few to have witnessed Y in
person.

D’s song ‘Shadows and Tall Trees’ is inspired by William E’s famous book

In the novel’s initial version, Xs were a tribe of 3,000 amiable black pygmies who have been imported
from ‘the very deepest and darkest part of the African jungle where no white man had been before.’, and
have now replaced the sacked white workers. They used to lived on green caterpillars, beetles,
eucalyptus leaves, ‘and the bark of the bong-bong tree. When the book first appeared in the United
States in 1964 it was regarded with only acclaim and enthusiasm.
It wasn’t until 1972, nearly a decade later, that a wide-ranging attack on the book was published by
American writer Eleanor Cameron and the political agenda of the story finally began to be debated, due
to the racist connotations. After heavy backlash the author released a revised version of the novel,
where Xs appeared as dwarfish hippies with long ‘golden-brown hair’ and ‘rosy-white’ skin.” The movies
though, didn’t stick with this exact description, but came up with their own depiction.

Q4 This characteristic of pop songs is a widely contested one, with one side claiming
that pop music gets boring because of it, and the other asserting that this
characteristic is what makes pop music such an easy choice to listen to.
In 2017, a computer scientist named Colin Morris created a tool to prove this
characteristic of songs by taking songs from the “Billboard Hot 100” song chart
from each year since 1958, up until 2017, which amounted to about 15,000 songs
(graph on next slide). His findings revealed that most songs by famous artists like
Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Imagine Dragons, etc. have this characteristic,
whereas other artists like Eminem, Guns n’ Roses, Dolly Parton, etc. mostly have
songs which have the exact opposite of this feature.
This was also recognized by another computer scientist, Donald Knuth, who
published a journal paper called “The Complexity of Songs” in 1977, where he uses
notation frequently used in complexity theory to showcase this aspect of songs.

  • 3. Q1 In 1917, a 23 year old X was hired as a French Professor at Eton College. One of his pupils was ____ _____, who later adopts his more famous pen name. When ____ _____ wrote his famous novel some thirty years later, he sent a copy to his teacher. Though X praises the novel, he also provided critique. Here is parts of the letter X wrote back to ____ _____. “I need not tell you, yet once more, how fine and how profoundly important the book is … Within the next generation I believe that the world's rulers will discover that infant conditioning and narco-hypnosis are more efficient, as instruments of government, than clubs and prisons, and that the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging and kicking them into obedience. In other words, I feel that the nightmare of Y is destined to modulate into the nightmare of a world having more resemblance to that which I imagined in Z.” Here Y is ____ _____’s novel and Z is X’s novel. In essence, X says his novel is better and will be true. ID all variables.
  • 5. ANSWER X - Aldous Huxley Z - Brave new world. Y - 1984 Eric Blair (Blank) adopted the nickname ‘George Orwell’
  • 6. Q2 Malayalam filmmaker Salim Ahamed, made a movie X, about a poor perfume seller whose only remaining wish in life is the Hajj pilgrimage, which he strives hard to fulfill. This movie had been sent as India's official entry to the Academy Awards in 2011. Salim later made a film about his experience at the Academy Awards titled Y. Y detailed the trials and tribulations of an Indian filmmaker who struggles to get his film noticed at the Oscars. Based on Salim's own experiences, the film shows the protagonist, played by Tovino Thomas, even starving because he has little money to promote his film for the awards. The film reveals that it's not just the quality of a movie that can ensure its performance at the awards – it's also about smart marketing and networking, both of which require money. Y was also reported to be one of the contenders before Gully Boy was chosen to be India’s 2019 entry for the Best International Feature Film category in the Academy Awards. ID the films X and Y.
  • 8. ANSWER X- Adaminte Makan Abu Y- And the Oscar Goes To
  • 9. Q3 Shown in the clip are Robert and Cecil Terwilliger, played by Kelsey Grammer and X. These characters are recurring antagonists on the simpsons and the brothers seem to have an uneasy, but cordial relationship, which later turns sour. Though he is often portrayed as a murderous psychopath, Bob is shown to appreciate the fine arts and wine and also breaks into song every now and then. Several of Bob’s and Cecil’s interactions are peppered with references to Grammer’s and X’s characters in a popular 90’s sitcom, Y, where Grammer plays the titular character, a psychiatrist who hosts a radio talk show, and X his brother. ID X and Y
  • 11. ANSWER X- Adaminte Makan Abu Y- And the Oscar Goes To
  • 12. Q4 A Clockwork Orange is a dystopian black comedy novel written by English writer Anthony Burgess. The original novel has 21 chapters in all publications, except the US. The 21st chapter was omitted from the editions published in the United States prior to 1986. Burgess explained that when he first brought the book to an American publisher, he was told that U.S. audiences would never go for the final chapter. At the publisher's insistence, Burgess omitted the 21st chapter and ended the book at the 20th, an ending which the publisher insisted would be more realistic and appealing to a US audience. Even Stanley Kubrick, who adapted the novel to a film, called chapter 21 an extra chapter and has never considered using it. In his opinion the final chapter was unconvincing and inconsistent with the book. What could the final chapter in the book have been about?
  • 14. ANSWER The protag Alex sees the error of his ways and finds less pleasure in violence
  • 15. Q5 A custom of the sea is a custom that is said to be practiced by the officers and crew of ships and boats in the open sea, different from maritime laws. Among these customs is the practice of cannibalism among shipwrecked survivors, by the drawing of lots to see who is to be killed and eaten so that the others might survive. R vs Dudley and Stephens case was a landmark case in 1884, when 4 people, three of whom were Dudley, Stephens and a young cabin boy. After a few days, due to lack of food, they killed the cabin boy, since he fell sick, and then consumed him. This case set the precedent that necessity is not a defence to a charge of murder, and gradually the practice was stopped. So this case was the inspiration for a very popular movie. A story similar to this case is told by the narrator of the movie as an ‘alternate version’ for his journeys. Which movie is this? What was the cabin boy’s name?

Doug Cockle, praised X's deep voice saying, "What else are you going to do with him? You can't give him a squeaky New York accent or something like that. He's gotta have that gruff voice." • 28. Rules 1. Written round, 6 questions 2. +10/0 for each question
  • 29. Rules This Round has a description of the training or body transformation that actors have undergone, in order to portray sportspersons in cinema. ID the actor and sportsperson
  • 30. 1. X trained five days a week, four hours a day to fill the shoes of Y, but just sport specific training was not enough for X to get into shape. In an interview, X mentioned that they spent a lot time in the gym trying to build muscle mass. X initially focused specifically on strengthening their legs in order to be able to execute the different types of jumps and spins, but quickly realized that this was not working. X further mentioned that after talking to Y about their progress, Y told X to forget about legs and focus on core training instead, as it would provide stability. This advice undoubtedly paid off as seen by X’s remarkable performance on screen. ID X and Y.
  • 31. 2. X had to get into serious shape to play Y, a world champion in his time. X was obsessed with idea of playing Y and even convinced the director to film the movie. In order to play Y, X was required to make a monumental physical transformation twice. To get the full experience, X actually trained alongside Y in the ring and they fought over 1000 practice rounds. In order to prepare himself further to take the mantle of Y on-screen, X entered in three genuine boxing matches and won two of them. The second part of his transformation was the weight X had to gain to accurately portray Y. X ate his way through Italy and gained 60 pounds in a span of 4 months. ID X and Y
  • 32. 3. When X got the role of Y, he said “I’m hoping to become his shadow. I will follow him wherever he goes and try to pick as much as possible from him. I hope to get some tips on _______ and _______ from the man himself. I trained for four hours everyday. I focus on my _______ and do a lot of physio. I’m doing better in _______ because from my childhood, I’ve had a natural ability for it." X did indeed learn from Y, at a long bootcamp organized in Dharmshala where he internalized Y’s style of playing. Apart from sport specific training, X went to the place where Y led his team to victory and even stayed with Y for a span of 10 days in order to understand the nuances of his character. ID X and Y.
  • 33. 4. The first step for actor X to play the role of Y was to lose weight. In Y’s profession, the lighter you are the more likely it is that you would win. X underwent extensive physical training to transform his body for the part, which included 16 workouts a week and dropping from 160 to 137 pounds. He also bought an equicizer, a contraption used to simulate the real deal and trained on that several times a week. X said in an interview - "I did not realize what kind of athletes _______ are. I mean, they are just warriors these guys - it's unbelievable The first time I actually got up and tried on the actual thing, I couldn't believe it. After a couple of minutes, my legs were noodles; I could barely stand up. It's just unbelievable and these guys are doing it seven days a week, 52 weeks a year." ID X and Y
  • 34. 5. In order to do justice to the role of Y, X refrained from his leisurely life with respect to food, drinks and lifestyle for over a year. X was on a strict diet in order to gain lean muscle mass, and did both athletic training as well as functional and resistance training. The objective of the athletic training was twofold - to teach X how a professional in the sport does it, and to incorporate Y’s personal quirks. • 35. 6. X, for the role of Y underwent multiple phases of training and preparation for the role. Y’s story was as much of mental strength as physical strength. Besides going through video footages and analyzing, he began to study the art under Angelo Dundee, who for 21 years trained Z. For authenticity, he rarely trained with weights and did most of cardio since these sportspersons in the 1930s did not have access to sophisticated methods. They designed a regimen that included kayaking, swimming, running, biking, hiking mountains, skipping rope and working a bag – all designed to build a naturally strong (but not overly muscular) body built for power and endurance. This enabled him to emulate Y’s physique, that was considered to be too light for his profession. Q4 This characteristic of pop songs is a widely contested one, with one side claiming that pop music gets boring because of it, and the other asserting that this characteristic is what makes pop music such an easy choice to listen to. In 2017, a computer scientist named Colin Morris created a tool to prove this characteristic of songs by taking songs from the “Billboard Hot 100” song chart from each year since 1958, up until 2017, which amounted to about 15,000 songs (graph on next slide). His findings revealed that most songs by famous artists like Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Imagine Dragons, etc. have this characteristic, whereas other artists like Eminem, Guns n’ Roses, Dolly Parton, etc. mostly have songs which have the exact opposite of this feature. This was also recognized by another computer scientist, Donald Knuth, who published a journal paper called “The Complexity of Songs” in 1977, where he uses notation frequently used in complexity theory to showcase this aspect of songs.
