1. MANGO ENGINEERING L.L.C.Newsletter January 1, 2010 Topic of the Month: ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT There is no more vital topic in todays economy than the subject of Engineering Management. The title suggests a hybrid discipline and indeed it is just that. It is a cross discipline; a synthesis of the scientific method, engineering, and philosophy. The mix is very much akin to the Sorcerers Pot. Maybe it is Alchemy: A pseudoscientific predecessor of chemistry; a pseudoscience altogether. Much has been made of the need for astute management practices. All organizations need it. Success and failure are by-products of it. Management requires Managers, individuals who know how to get things done correctly and efficiently. By definition, a Manager is one who manages an organization group of staff, a person in-charge of a business. It is a prerequisite that such individuals know how to manage people, activities, and circumstances. Engineering on the other hand is an applied science based upon scientific principles and method. Engineers are creative individuals who require mathematical exactitude and possess critical minds. They are naturally analytical and inherently economically minded individuals. They are hard to control and usually very driven to accomplish their goals. Much like an artist, they are passionate about their work. Mix the engineering mind with the managerial discipline and you get a winning combination of talents. Much like the alchemist, such an individual can conjure the mixture with metaphysical genius. He mixes the two disciplines in his Sorcerers Pot by toiling and boiling the mixture to a distilled product that is like none other. His Sorcerers Pot is his mind, borne of sharp discipline and critical learning. There is no single source of education that can accomplish the creation of such skills. The world today is a highly technological environment. Economies need and depend upon technical knowledge but need managers who fully understand the commercial industrial environment. Individuals who can lead their organizations and resources toward successful ends are vital to success. Who can succeed by profitable use of all resources available under challenging and changing conditions? That is the goal!
