Overview
What is Internet of
Things(IoT)?
Where is IoT?
How IoT works?
Applications of IoT.
How Big is IoT?
Internet of Things (IoT)
 Friendly Technology.
 IoT is the network of physical objects
devices, vehicles, buildings and other items
embedded with electronics, software, sensors.,
And network connectivity that enables these
objects to collect and exchange data.
 "The Ultimate Goal of IOT is to Automate
Human Life."
Contd…
 This new wave of connectivity is going beyond
laptops and smart phones,
 It’s going towards connected cars, smart homes,
connected wearable's, smart cities and
connected healthcare.
 Internet of Objects refers to a wireless network
between objects.
Contd…
 Sensors act as primary devices to collect data
from the environment.
 Next generation devices-that can sense aspects of
the real world like temperature, lighting, the
presence or absence of people or objects etc., and
report that real world data (or) act on it.
 IoT allows objects to be sensed and controlled
remotely across existing network infrastructure.
How IoT works?
Cloud
Why You Need an IoT Gateway
 First, sensors usually have very limited
capabilities in terms of networking connectivity.
 Sending all the information collected by sensors to
a data center would be highly ineffective in terms
of performance and network utilization.
Contd…
 The sensors/devices can be connected to the cloud
through IoT gateway as central point where we
will getting real world information from the
sensors as an input to this gateway.
 An IoT gateway is needed to perform the pre-
processing of information, before they’re sent to
the data center.
 such as device connectivity, protocol translation,
data filtering and processing, security, updating,
management and more.
Where is IoT?
Contd…
Wearable Tech
Healthcare
Smart
Appliances
Real World Applications of IoT
1. Smart Home
if you could switch
on air conditioning
before reaching
home
• or unlock the doors to friends for
temporary access even when you
are not at home.
• To make your life simpler and
convenient.
or switch off lights
even after you
have left home.
2. Wearable's
 Wearable devices are installed with sensors and
software's which collect data and information
about the users.
 These devices broadly cover fitness, health and
entertainment requirements.
 Highly energy efficient or ultra-low power and
small sized.
Internet of Things(IOT)_Seminar_Dr.G.Rajeshkumar
3. Connected Cars
 Most large auto makers as well as some brave
startups are working on connected car solutions.
 Major brands like Tesla, BMW, Apple,
Google are working on bringing the next
revolution in automobiles.
4. Industrial IoT
 Smart machines are more accurate and consistent
than humans in communicating through data.
 Applications:
a. Tracking goods,
b. Real time information exchange about inventory
among suppliers and retailers and
c. Automated delivery will increase the supply
chain efficiency.
5. Smart Cities
 Powerful application of IoT.
 Smart surveillance, automated transportation,
smarter energy management systems, water
distribution, urban security and environmental
monitoring.
 IoT will solve major problems faced by the
people living in cities like pollution, traffic
congestion and shortage of energy supplies etc.
Internet of Things(IOT)_Seminar_Dr.G.Rajeshkumar
6. IoT in agriculture(Smart farming )
 With the continuous increase in world’s
population, demand for food supply is extremely
raised.
 Governments are helping farmers to
use advanced techniques and research to increase
food production.
 Sensing for soil moisture and nutrients,
controlling water usage for plant growth and
determining custom fertilizer are some simple
uses of IoT.
Internet of Things(IOT)_Seminar_Dr.G.Rajeshkumar
How Big is IoT?
(IoT Market)
 As of 2013, 9.1 billion IoT units
 According to Gartner report, by 2020 connected
devices across all technologies will reach to 20.6
billion. That’s a huge number.
 Revenue growth from $1.9 trillion in 2013 to $7.1
trillion in 2020
Internet of Things(IOT)_Seminar_Dr.G.Rajeshkumar
Internet of Things(IOT)_Seminar_Dr.G.Rajeshkumar
Plan for IoT growth:
 Increased network traffic: will your firewall / IDS /
IPS be compatible and keep up?
 Increased demand for IP addresses both IPv4 and
IPv6
 Increased network complexity – should these
devices be isolated or segmented?
Threat vs. Opportunity
 What happened when 50B machines become
connected?
 If misunderstood and misconfigured, IoT creates
risk to our data, privacy, and safety
 If understood and secured, IoT will enhance
communications, lifestyle, and delivery of
services
Thank you…
