It depicts Isaac Newton sitting under a
tree, an apple dangling precipitously
above his head. The phrase on the
outside border reads, “Newton… A

graphic designer Rob Janoff to come
up with something a little bit more

8. X was created by Eustace Fernandes, the
art director of DaCunha Communications
in 1966, the same year the simple yet
catchy phrase “Y_Z” was coined by
Sylvester DaCunha’s wife, Nisha DaCunha.
In 1966, DaCunha and Fernandes designed
the mascot’s first public appearance on
billboards. The cute image of X kneeling in
prayer, with one eye closed got an
immediate positive response from the
public.

12. There have been rumors that the logo of Apple inc.
was a tribute to X, a computer scientist who
committed suicide in 1954 by cyanide poisoning,
and had been found with a half-eaten apple next to
his bed. But it turned out that the bite in the Apple
logo is there for scale, so the apple would not be
confused with a cherry.
