We’re delighted to meet with you today on this exciting topic – Journey to the Cloud. There are fundamental new ways to build, operate, and consume IT that offer huge opportunities for organizations today.New ways for IT to cope with the explosive growth of information and rising expectations for IT – and the ability to raise the bar for what’s possible in IT To make greater gains in reducing capital costs, operational costs, and to increase business agility. …. I think this is an exciting – even transformative -- time for IT.Let’s begin
IT is at a breaking point, it is becoming too complex – too inefficient – too inflexible – and too costly. The proof point of that is that 73% of the budgets for IT are spent maintaining existing infrastructure and applications. While only 27% is doing something truly new to help propel the business – to create better cross points with their customers or more differentiation in the marketplace. Which creates angst in the business.
Once we’ve identified a service provider that can deliver the services we can’t, or simple deliver the services better, we shift to these provider resources. We can, and probably should, continue to be the interface to the business – their needs are likely to change, and that may mean that we’ll move back to our private cloud or to a different provider. So the relationship between IT and the business remains the same as it was with the new private cloud model, but now IT has many more resources and options to deliver services to the business. IT’s takes on the role of optimizing this large set of choices in resources. In the past IT might have optimized resources by deciding to host an application on the mainframe or the Unix platform, now doing the same thing with these new choices – optimizing the choice of hosting an application in their private cloud or with a compatible service provider.Just as in the mainframe or Unix days, IT retains the responsibility for delivering against the expectations and requirements of the business.
Some are beginning to believe that if combining compatible service provider resources with private cloud resources is so easy for IT, and so transparent to the business, then perhaps these decisions won’t necessarily need to be so permanent. Perhaps resources for an application can be federated together (two or more things joined so as to operate as one) so that greater resources are available during unusually high peak load periods. This is a very appealing concept, however conventional technology of the past has made this difficult to achieve from a technical standpoint. So let’s take a deeper look at what makes this a viable option…
What you get from this server plus storage federation are … cooperating pools of storage and server resources … the ability to move applications and data dynamically … and a key technology for enabling IT as a service.Put another way … It delivers completely new computing and data center models that provide the foundation to fully enable the Private Cloud, allowing the ability to:Move thousands of VM’s over thousands miles,Batch process in low-cost energy locations,Enable boundary-less workload balancing and relocation,Aggregate big data centers from separate ones, and deliver “24 x forever” – and run or recover applications without restart. Ever!
So, to wrap up:Cloud computing is everywhere and is coming your way – and faster than you may realize. With the cloud … IT will be built differently, operated differently and consumed differently. It offers profound and lasting benefits to your business. Our strategy with the private cloud is to meet you where you are today and enable you to capture the benefits of cloud without losing control of your IT and without increasing your risk.We have thousands of our customers and partners on this journey to the private cloud with us.We are all learning from each other. And EMC is investing heavily to develop all of the knowledge we can about how to make this journey safe and fulfilling for our customers.I encourage you to get started on this journey. And to turn to EMC to move you along the path.We have a lot to offer you.
