Abstract
Today, there is a growing number of drug addicts in the
world; however, few devices are provided for drug
addicts even if they are released from prison.
Therefore, our product, PeaceWatch offers drug
addicts a similar function to priests during their
rehabilitation period, such as broadcasts, including
personal questions, and voice memos. These functions
can enhance their sense of security and also sense of
unity. Last but not least, we expect that through
PeaceWatch, drug addicts can stay on track and
re-integrate into society more easily after being
released from prison.

Introduction
Nowadays, there are more and more drug addicts in
the world, and crime in Taiwan often results from drug
addiction and drug trading. In our investigations, our
team found that most people have a preconception of
drug addicts who have been released from prison; that
is, even if a drug addict wants to turn over a new leaf,
this society may have difficulty accepting him or her.
Furthermore, we found that lots of drug addicts would
like to ask priests for help during their rehabilitation
period.
Figure 1: Affinity diagram got by
semi-structured interviews in
public place
Thereby, our team decided to focus on drug addicts
released from prison and their connection with a priest.
We want to help priests to keep an eye on drug
addicts; we want to design a product which can act as
an assistant for the priest by monitoring and taking
care of those drug addicts to prevent their abuse of
drugs when priests are not beside them.
In the short-term, we hope that this product will help
drug addicts to feel more secure by maintaining their
contact with a priest following release from prison. In
the long-term, we are looking forward to helping drug
addicts to re-integrate into society more easily after
being released from prison via this product.
Related Work
Smartwatches are prevalent products now in 2015.
Several technology corporations launched
smartwatches and related products, including Apple
Watch[1], Pebble Steel[2], MOTO 360[3], Sony
SmatWatch[4], Samsung Gear Live[5] and so on. All
these products have the basic function of smartphones
like notification and viewing messages. Some
smartwatches act as smartphone with SIM cards and
tiny touchscreens, while others try to put fitness bands
and smartwatches into one device or try to establish
smartwatches own platform.[6]
Now the lanched smartphones in market are very
much the first generation products and need time to
grow. But the technique is adequate to develop the
functions that PeaceWatch needs, including
broadcasting, recording, voice memos, sending
messages and GPS for the tracking function.
Design Process
To analyse and foresee how society is likely to think of
drug addicts, we adopt a User-centered design model
to understand our problem space and frame our design
opportunity. Our goal is finding the opportunity of
promoting communications between drug addicts and
the society. As a result, we focus on two problems:
1. what’s the truly needs of drug addicts
2. how can make the society accept them
On drug addicts side, we contacted some after-care
association and church for getting the chance to
approach those problematic people; On society side,
we design a questionnaire for contexture inquiry,
including the following questions:
1. If one of your friends/family members, A, is a
drug addicts, does he need to confess this truth
to you?
2. If your subordinate/colleague, A, is a drug
addicts, does he need to confess this truth to
you?
3. If A tells you the truth that he is addicted with
drugs, and he resolves to restart a new life, what
comes to your mind?
4. If you accidentally find A is addicted with drugs
and he conceals the truth, what comes to your
mind?
User Research and Insights
At first, we planned to visit the Taiwan After-Care
Association to interview drug addicts or the volunteers
who might helped drug drug addict before. But the
Taiwan After-Care Association asked for formal
documents for visitation. So we decide to conduct our
user research in other field. We decided to figure out
Figure 2: Questionnaire for
contexture inquiry
how society think about the drug addict by conducting
qualitative questionnaire.We conducted questionnaire
answering by 15 people in the Taipei Chien Kuo
Holiday Flower Market on Sunday. Also, we
interviewed Minister Peng, the minister of the
Xin-Wang-Ai Church, who had been in touch with drug
addicts. Our goal was to discover how people with drug
addiction think and how would they act when they get
past the immediate effects of the drug overdose.
Through the research, we gained four valuable insights
of the communication gap between people with drug
addiction and the society.
INSIGHT 1
People with drug addiction have sentimental emotion,
and comparatively cannot accept criticism.
INSIGHT 2
Once having drug habit, it would be hard to get rid of it.
Once the recurrence of drug addiction, the drug
addicts would feel painful and would seek for other
things to distract from the pain and the sufferings. But
the sufferings could be temporarily ended by external
factors like religious ritual, yelling from others, for
examples.
INSIGHT 3
Many drug addicts are the socially disadvantaged.
They grew up in vulnerable environment or a
dysfunctional family. In the other case, they made
friends who have the problems of drug addiction. Even
though they went to drug rehabilitation center, they
couldnt break away from poverty, dysfunctional family
or their circle of friends.
INSIGHT 4
People with drug addiction generally dont like to talk
about themselves, or the experience about drug
rehabilitation center. They tend to hide the fact of drug
addiction when faced with other people or new friends.
In some cases, when people knew the fact of their
addiction to drug, drug addicts broke all the contacts.
But the society wants to learn more about drug addicts,
including their past and even their criminal record,
before the society get familiar with them. This claim
from the society is even more stronger when the drug
addict seek for jobs.
Using the insights gained from the user research, we
defined Drug addicts emancipator as someone who
matches one of the following assumptions:
1. supporting system for people with drug addiction
2. a way that let the society know much better about
the drug addict and the difficulties they have
faced
3. enhancer of the drug addicts self-control.
We then link the priests role for the drug addict to the
above-mentioned assumption and our insights.
Through our interview and user research, we know that
the church and the accompany of priests are great
supporting systems that can improve the self-control of
drug addicts. But the drug addicts usually lack the
sense of security. Especially during the time without
the supporting system, they might be vulnerable to
others and getting more emotional. Since that, we want
Figure 3: System diagram for
PeaceWatch
to create a supporting system acting like the priests
assistant which can enhance the sense of security of
the drug addicts. And this assistant can help a priest to
care for more people at the same time, even when the
priest are not at their side. Simple functions like
broadcasting and voice memo can solve these
problem, because these function make the users feel
the care from the priest anytime and anywhere. So we
developed the priests assistant, PeaceWatch, which
can keep the sense of security of the drug addicts by
broadcasting and voice memo.
System
PeaceWatch is an outstanding product designed to
assist in the rehabilitation of drug addicts by providing
services in place of a priest such as broadcasts,
including personal questions, and voice memos.
Addicts can wear this watch and easily connect with
the priest assigned to them.
Whilst still in prison, priests can take note of the
situation of each drug addict they take care of and
effectively support their fragile mindsets. However,
there are not enough priests to serve such a large
number of drug addicts after release. Drug addicts are
often out of control after leaving priests monitoring and
may be more likely to commit crimes. Thats why we
made PeaceWatch!
Through broadcasting, drug addicts can sense the
presence of the priest around them. There is a topic in
each time session: a short motivational story is
broadcast each morning, and each hour stories are
told by famous priests, and drug addicts who
successfully stopped using drugs are invited to share
their experiences. As these shows will be broadcast to
a large community of addicts, this will provide each
addict with a sense of unity, encouraging them to stay
on track.
More importantly, we provide a service which asks
simple questions between broadcasts concerning the
addicts life, such as how are you today, tell me
something good that has happened today. The addict
can record an answer, and our service enables the
priest assigned to that addict to provide a personal
response. The addict will directly receive the priests
message, and the familiar voice will help to make them
feel personally cared for, giving them a sense of
security.
Taxonomy of emotion and mind situation
low self-control desired of drugs
accidental violation
frustrated work without accomplish
shame for past
cannot be accept by the society
angry being annoyed by trivial things
lonely no friends
weak connection in family
bored nothing to do
no passion for the life
Table 1: we classified voice memos into these categories
which have various senarios for each
Additionally, voice memos recorded by priests are
classified into various emotions. Drug addicts can
choose to listen to these voice recordings depending
on whether they feel angry, bored, lonely or impatient.
Through this function, drug addicts can listen to a
strong, encouraging voice at any time and anywhere,
allowing it to function like an amulet. This can also
enhance their sense of security.
Evaluation
To evaluate our design, we gathered feedback from
some drug addicts at a priest’s church.
Broadcast
We learned that most users prefer to listen to
broadcasting programs before their work, after their
work, and also before they go to sleep. Other time
sessions are relatively unpreferred. Consequently, we
are looking forward to making more priests do the
broadcast and enhance the quality of programs in the
above time sessions.
Voice Memo
From insight1, we know that people with drug addiction
usually have sentimental emotions. By recording the
number of voice memos which they listened to each
day, we found that low self-control is the most common
situation for drug addicts. And the second common
one is loneliness. According to the result of
experimental, we decided to provide more voice
memos for these two categories.
Discussion
In the beginning, we tried to add GPS function for
tracking drug addicts. However, there are several
problems. First, using GPS to track their life cannot
thoroughly enhance the sense of sucurity of drug
addicts. Second, priests think of it as a useless function
for them. Third, we should build fundamental credibility
with drug addicts instead of directly monitoring them.
Therefore, the GPS function was removed.
Also, we assumed that drug addicts would frequently
encounter some emergency situations. A SOS function
would be convenient if it is installed in PeaceWatch.
Next we have done an experiment for 2 people: putting
a PeaceWatch and a telephone in front of each of
them, and then asking them to imagine an emergent
situation happening right that time. We found that both
of them would like to chooce the phone instead of
using PeaceWatch to generate a SOS signal. As a
result, we remove these two functions.
Conclusion
Observing the lack of existing social supporting system
for drug addicts after their release from rehabilitation
center, we decided to focus on building the bridge
between drug addicts and society. Furthermore,
through our iterative design process and user
research, we have digged out some insights into the
insecurity of drug addicts while they are facing some
difficulty when entering society, or loosing support from
other people, such as their family or priests.
Therefore, PeaceWatch, a wearable device which
could enhance the sense of security of drug addicts, is
created. Via broadcasting and voice memo,
PeaceWatch is expected to help drug addicts control
their emotions by making them feel surrounded with
the love given by priests, to provide them sense of
unity, and to build the crossing between priests and
drug addicts. Moreover, we hope that Preistwatch can
assist drug addicts in reconstructing their sense of
self-control and self-esteem, especially when they are
interacting with others. Thereby, they could have
chance to take control of themselves again and most
importantly, stay on track.
Future Work
PeaceWatch is mainly focused on drug addicts.
Nonetheless, for the future work, we should not only
consider needs of them but also of those people
besides them, such as their family or priests. After all,
what we expect is enhancing their sense of unity, and
providing them not only emotional support, but also
some practical help by their family, or even the
government.
