What is FDT/DTM?
FDT / DTM
FDT = Field Device Tool (frame application)
Follows a published standard specification
DTM = Device Type Manager (device driver)
Compatible with an FDT frame application
Open standardised technology
independent of device or system supplier
Independent of device type
sensor, actuator, remote I/O, drives, etc.
Full support of installed base
Independent of communication protocol
Ethernet, HART, PROFIBUS, Foundation Fieldbus, etc.
Vertical integration by nested communication

The start of Field Device Integration
Announcement at Hannover Fair 2007
March 6th 2007 - FDT Group and EDDL
Cooperation Team member organisations
agree to work on a unified solution – Field
Device Integration – FDI
FDT Group will join the ECT as a voting
member

Why start this cooperation?
Process Automation end users ask for a single solution
Current FDT and EDDL technologies have partial overlap causing a competitive situation
Current situation is confusing because of conflicting messages
Suppliers face expensive development
Most suppliers are members of both ECT Organization and FDT Group. They must invest in parallel
to support both technologies
