Introduction
A counselor must give accurate and usable
information about jobs . Different jobs require different
abilities, personalities and varied interest .
Consequently , a counselor must have considerable
information about occupations if he is to achieve
successful guidance of his pupil .
To choose a proper occupation is difficult of people
because they normally have lack of knowledge about
that occupation .
 For these kind of people occupational information is
provided .
 It includes facts concerning the importance of an
occupation , entrance requirements , opportunities for
promotion , health and accident hazards
compensations and other working conditions that are
usually found in specific occupations or related group
of occupations .
Occupational

By considering the meaning of
above two words , we can conclude that facts or
knowledge gained or given about the facts of job or
an occupation is known as OCCUPATIONAL
INFORMATION .

occupation trends , the supply & demand of labor &
training facilities .
Definitions of occupational
information
 Acc. To Shartle, “ Occupational Information is
the accurate and usable information about
jobs and occupations”.
 Hoppock says, “ Occupational Information
includes any and all kinds of information
,regarding any position , job or occupation
,providing only that the information is
potentially of a person who is choosing an
occupation.
Methods of collecting
occupational information
Survey methods :-
a)Personal survey method
b)Questionnaire survey method
c)Community survey method
d)Alumni follow up survey method
e)Want ad survey method
 PERSONAL SURVEY
METHOD
 This method requires
more leg work and time .
 This method is more
effective for collecting
information in compare to
other methods .
 In this a collector collects
information by asking to
the workers , technicians
, officers & investigators
of an occupation .
 WANT AD SURVEY
METHOD
 It is one of the cheapest &
easiest method of collecting
information .
 Such advertisements which
appear in newspapers over
a period of 6 months or a
year are collected &
information contained I
them is analyzed &
tabulated .
 This is a good method for
providing current
information about jobs.
Job analysis method
job analysis is the process of determining by observation
and study and repotting pertinent information related to the
nature of a specific job. If is the determination of the tasks
which comprise he job and of the sills. Knowledge abilities
and responsibilities required of the worker for successful
performance and which differentiate the job from all other .
It is an accurate study of the various components of the
jobs. It is concerned not only with the analysis of duties and
conditions of works, but also with the individual qualification
of the worker.
Job analysis means to
know the essential
features of a job to
provide the required
information of job
description
,specification and
classification.
Three major parts of the
analysis of job:-
• The job must be
accurately identified.
• The tasks of the job must
be accurately described.
• The requirements of the
job for its successful
performance must be
identified

Methods of disseminating
information
There are two chief methods of presenting occupational
information to students:-
1.Individual
methods
2.Group
methods
Group methods of presenting
occupational information
Under the present condition group method
of presenting occupational information is
most suitable . Besides, the group method
has the following advantages :-
• Orientation can be given to all students .
• Information of common interest and value can be
economically imparted
• Experiences of a number
Group method of presenting
occupational information
1. Through subject:- every subject teacher can show his
students the relationship between the subject matter
and occupation, as well as the vocational implications of
his subject matter.
 Career talk:- career talk is on special field of
occupations or training appropriate to group of particular
educational levels , emphasizing the importance of
vocational planning .these may be arranged for student
of particular faculties in a college . The subject matter
may range from how and why of career planning to
disseminating information about board and specific field
of opportunities . This is one of the best ways of giving
first hand information about the merits and limitations of
a particular occupation.
 Career conferences:- career conferences are series of
meetings in which various professional experts in different
occupations participate and make available their intimate
knowledge of the requirement and opportunities in their fields
of work . The programme of the conference should be well-
drawn up . The most suitable time for such conferences is the
beginning of the academic session when parents , too , can
be invited.
 Career groups :- they provide an occasion for imparting
occupational information . As the group is usually small,
problems regarding the different field of occupations can
be discussed informally.
Works sample projects:- the student may spend a day or two on
the job their choice . This will give them familiar with the working
conditions in particular industries not possible through reading.
Special card and catalogue:- the counselor should prepare special
card catalogue of the most useful occupational studies from books,
pamphlets and magazines for ready reference . these card should
contain not only the usual information of author , titles or publisher
, but also a careful analysis and evaluation of the study.
Films and films strips:- films and film strips also help to
arouse interest in the study of occupations.
Dramatization :- the writing and production of ane act play
about occupation by students can prove an interesting
way of disseminating occupational information. For
example , the idea of the right and wrong way to apply for
a job, or to appear for an interview can prove useful and
interesting . Certain dramatized radio and TV
programmers' can also prove useful.
 Career education:- the information can be given to the
student through the systematic teaching of occupations.
Through visit the places of work:- visits to places
of works , factories or business establishment
can also prove useful as the pupils can get first-
hand knowledge about the working conditions.
Career exhibition:- a career exhibition means to
organized display of material of occupational interest .
although it is usually not possible to give detailed
information through a display ,certain basis idea can
be presented simply and clearly and at the same time ,
it can also be useful in directed to student other
sources of information. Student can play an active role
in planning and organizing career exhibition.
Bulletin board announcement and other devices:- bulletin
board announcement ,display and other devices may be
used to call attention to the information available. Copies
of handouts received from DGE and UGC, different
ministries and social agencies/university employment
information and guidance bureau can also be displayed
with advantage. A special notice board or bulletin board
bearing the name ‘vocational guidance’ is described .
Through library:- a rich body of reference material, easily
available , can help in informing the students about
occupations and their requirements. A separate section in
the library should be organized . Prospectuses of various
institutes may also be included in it with advantages.
Occupation information as a
regular subject
Through college day programme
Through students club and council
Through special subjects teacher
Through posters and advertisements cuttings
Through vocational conferences
Through group therapy
Through display charts, graphs and published material
Through co-curricular activities
Through audio-visual aids
By inviting specialist
Individual method of presenting
occupational information
 The better medium is asking questions to the
counselee by the counselor .according to Bera &
Royber , during Interview following questions should be
asked :-
1) In what circumstances occupational information is
provided in counseling interview ?
2) How much help is done by counselor to the
counselee in utilizing occupational information ?
3) Which occupational information is proper for the
counsel , how does a counselor determine it ?
4) How does the counselor evaluate the utility of
occupational information , provided in counseling
interview ?
Through individual contacts:-students can seek the counselors
help in the planning career , choosing a course of study ,
training or apprenticeship . The individual techniques is the
best for disseminating information ,but due to the paucity of
guidance personnel and the large number of students to be
guided, it may not be possible to arranged such interview for
every students. These may be restricted to student who can
not be helped much through group techniques
Conclusion :-
 A large amount of accurate ,
up to date information
regarding educational and
vocational institutions , jobs &
industries , occupational
patterns , occupational fields ,
training facilities , educational ,
professional and technical
courses , newly emerging
occupation , job specifications
, wage structure , change in
required skills , employment
trends , patterns etc is vital to
success of any guidance and
counseling program .
