2. INTRODUCTION
âą Extractives are the natural chemical products of biomass
that are capable of being extracted by some solvents.
âą It comes under physical parameter of the drug evaluation.
âą It helps to indicate the nature of chemical constituents
present in the drug.

4. Water soluble extractives
âą Is applied for the drugs which contain water soluble constituents such as tannins,
sugars, plant acids and mucilage.
Alcohol soluble extractives
âą For drugs which contain alcohol soluble constituents such as tannins, resins, and
alkaloids.
Ether soluble extractives
âą For extraction of volatile oil, fixed oils and resins.
âą volatile ether soluble extractive
âą non volatile ether soluble extractive.

5. DETERMINATION
WATER SOLUBLE EXTRACTIVE VALUE
1) Macerate about 5gm of the accurately weighed coarse powder(air dried drug) with 100ml of
water in a 100ml volumetric flask for 24hrs.
2) Shake frequently for first 6 hrs.
3) Filter rapidly, through filter paper and evaporate 25ml of water extract (water bath) to dryness
in a tared flat bottomed shallow dish.
4) Dry the residue at 105 (muffle furnace) and weigh. Keep it in a desiccator.
5) Dry the extract to constant weight, finally calculate the % of W/W of water soluble extractive
value with reference to the air dried drug.

ALCOHOL SOLUBLE EXTRACTIVE VALUE
1) Macerate about 5gm of the accurately weighed coarse powder(air dried drug) with
100ml of 90% alcohol in a 100ml volumetric flask for 24hrs
2) Shake frequently for first 6 hrs.
3) Filter rapidly, through filter paper and evaporate 25ml of alcohol extract (steam bath)
to dryness in a tared flat bottomed shallow dish.
4) Dry the residue at 105 (muffle furnace) and weigh. Keep it in a desiccator.
5) Dry the extract to constant weight, finally calculate the % of W/W of alcohol soluble
extractive value with reference to the air dried drug.

13. SIGNIFICANCE
Extractive values are primarily useful for the determination of exhausted or adulterated drugs.
Helps to indicate the nature of chemical constituents present in the drug.
The extractive value of crude drug determines the quality as well as purity of the drug.
Useful in evaluation when the constituents of the drugs can not be readily estimated by any other means.
