The Dräger Pulsar 7700/7900 is a stationary open-path gas detector that can detect potentially explosive hydrocarbons like methane and propane from up to 200 meters away within two seconds. It has a robust stainless steel design and fast-responding sensor that make it reliable for use in the oil, gas, and chemical industries. The system includes a transmitter that emits a signal, a receiver that detects the signal, and accessories like a weather guard and handheld terminal for alignment and diagnostics. It provides reliable detection even in adverse weather and can continuously self-test for safety.

Detection of flammable gases and vapour
The Dräger Pulsar 7700/7900 is a stationary open-path gas detector for
detecting potentially explosive hydrocarbons in gases and vapours. Its
robust design and the extremely short response time of its sensor make
the Dräger Pulsar 7700/7900 a reliable solution for challenges in the oil
and gas and chemicals industries.

2. Benefits
02 | Dräger Pulsar 7700/7900
Reliable and fast measurement
The Pulsar 7700/7900 detects a wide range of gaseous hydrocarbons, including methane, propane and also
ethylene. An accumulation of these gases in critical concentrations can be measured at a distance of up to
200 metres within two seconds. This is achieved by the flashing frequency, which increases in strong mode.
Status LEDs in the transmitter and receiver indicate even over a larger distance that the device is ready to
operate. The Pulsar 7700/7900 also runs continual self-tests for additional safety and reliability. If the signal
strength is insufficient, the transmitter sends out a freely configurable pre-warning signal. The system continues
to detect gases whilst sending additional warning signal indicating that maintenance is required, for example
because a lens has become dirty. This makes it possible to plan maintenance in advance and avoid unexpected
downtimes. The Pulsar 7700/7900 is suitable for safety-related technical applications up to SIL 2.
Reliable even in adverse weather conditions
Reliability is not just ensured in ideal weather conditions. The Pulsar 7700/7900 uses strong mode to
compensate for increased absorption of the signal intensity by fog, mist, heavy rain or snow. Lens heating also
prevents the accumulation of snow and condensation on the lens.
Easy alignment, configuration and commissioning
It takes just one person to align the transmitter and receiver and then commission the system – the process is
simple and does not require additional telescopic or alignment mirrors. Once the transmitter and receiver are
roughly lined up by sight, a handheld terminal is used to achieve precise alignment. The terminal displays the
alignment either in a coordinate system with crosshairs or as numerical coordinates. The integrated calibration
function of the Pulsar 7700/7900 does not require manual adjustment or standard test gas. After the alignment
procedure is finished a self-zeroing sequence is started to complete the commissioning of the system. The
alignment and signal strength parameters are saved and then used later to detect any misalignments or
accumulation on the lenses.
On-site diagnostics
The handheld terminal can be used for preventative maintenance and any fault diagnostics on site. In addition
to support alignment and zeroing, the handheld terminal also has configuration and diagnostic functions. More
comprehensive diagnostics are possible with the Dräger PolySoft PC software.
Documented safety – integrated data logger and log report
An integrated data logger saves the most recent errors, warnings and events. These include events such
as beam blocks, gas alarms, warning signals and alignment and supply voltage problems. Alongside the
data logger, there is also a summary log report that provides the values measured within an hour. The report
contains important information, such as the measured gas value, signal strength and temperature.
This data is available for the last ten weeks of operation. Information is also provided as a weekly summary from
the last ten years of operation.

PIA – Pulsar interface adapter
The Dräger Pulsar interface adapter (PIA) is robust, weatherproof
and certified for hazard zones. The PIA provides two interfaces for
communication with the Pulsar 7700/7900 through its intrinsically safe
connection. Combined with a HART® handheld terminal or PC with
PolySoft, it acts as a protocol converter via the IR interface to align and
calibrate Pulsar transmitters and receivers. It also has configuration/
diagnostic options.
ST-977-2001
Handheld terminal
The handheld terminal from Dräger is a robust, weatherproof device
approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The terminal is
used to align and zero the Dräger Pulsar transmitter and receiver. It also
offers basic configuration and diagnostic functions.
ST-3531-2003
AI 500 and adapter cable
The digital AI 500 interface is used to provide extensive diagnostic data
when connected with the Dräger Polytron PC software and a PC in
the non-potentially explosive zone. Up to four Pulsar systems can be
connected via this interface.
