INFORMATION OVERLOAD
BANE OF THE MODERN
WORLD
INFORMATION OVERLOAD
 Information overlord is a common phenomenon seen in the
modern world. Too much of information presented before a
person make it difficult for him to find out which is relevant
and which is irrelevant. The stress and burden caused by
too many data is called information overlord.
 Information Overload is when you are trying to deal with
more information than you are able to process to make
sensible decisions. The result is either that you either delay
making decisions, or that you make the wrong decisions.
 Information overlord is also known as infoxication,
information anxiety, information explosion.
 The term was first coined by American social scientist B M
Gross in 1964,but popularized by famous futurologists Aivin
Toffler through his book future shock
CAUSES OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD
 Too much information
 Multiple sources of information
 Failure in distinguish between relevant and
irrelevant information
 Lack of time to understand information
overload
EFFECT OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD
 Distraction: The attention
span of students is
decreasing every single day.
Teachers are also affected . If
students cannot focus, then
studying will be a huge
problem. Most students can’t
put their phones down for a
few minutes. The urge to
respond to other peoples’
solicitations is stronger like
never before.
 Indecisiveness : If
you are overwhelmed
by anything, your brain
freezes. You cannot
make the most
important decisions
that truly matter. What
you end up doing is
postponing making
decisions all the time.
And this becomes a
habit that’s difficult to
stop.
 Too much irrelevant information :
When you are using the internet, you will definitely come
across irrelevant information. Most of them are usually
attractive and fun to read in the moment but useless in the
long run. Such information wastes a lot of time and energy.
SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM
 Help your students : Students need to be guided
on how to use the internet effectively. Teachers
should always be there for their students. When
students understand how to use the internet
effectively, it’s not easy for them to fall into the traps
laid before them.
 Share information : Encourage students to share
the information they have with others. This activity
will help them reflect and look for information that
makes sense with regard to their field of study.
 Manage your information Be selective and
prioritize your work
 keep it simple Don't duplicate information
 Clear your mind Put your thoughts on put your
thoughts on paper
 Stay away from social media distraction
 Sit back and read a book in your free time
CONCLUSION
People all around the world are realizing information
overload as a threat and indulging themselves in
programs that help them to get rid of it. It’s important to
understand that our brains have certain limitations, we
cannot always let information flow in, of course, it's very
hard to avoid it in this digital era but we can always put
boundaries on the usage of data so that it does not
become ‘overloaded’ and starts affecting our mental
health.
Experts and researchers say that information is not the
problem. It’s our inability to cope with it that’s the
problem.
