5. • Social work began as profession since 19th century from
USA and Britain.
• After the end of feudalism the poor people appeared
as problem in the society.
• The state government an organized system to look
after them.
• The poor Law also play great role in Britain. It
categorized the poor people into healthy and able
poor, unable poor, lazy poor.
• When the Industrial Revolution of 19th century was
declared people in the west massively began to
migrate to city area which created the big problem in
society.
• The protestant church community sent out
missionaries to rural to solve poverty, prostitution,
disease treatment as well as other problems.
6. • The workers known as ‘Friendly guest/herbingers’
were financially supported by church and worked
through prayer, relief and evangelism. The clergy
men appointed to help the church mission in
Europe.
• Some relief organization were established to
make way out the women involved in prostitution
self-sufficient.
• So many mental hospitals established.
• New philosophy of ‘Scientific charity’ was born it
emphasized on welfare work must be secularism,
rational and empirical in the contrary of
communal and extremism.
7. • The another mission in 1880s was born to help
poor and weak through ‘Ghuchku formula 3Rs’
means research, reform and residence. It also
provided educational, legal health and other
services.
• This program also brought change in social policy.
The missionaries got to study people’s culture
and lifestyle.
• Social work gave birth to a question like: Is social
work a profession?
• This debate begun between ‘Management
Residence Campaign’ of Jane Adam and Mary
Richard’s ‘Charity Organization Society’ in 20th.
8. • This dispute made confusing between social
worker and client. And the question was just
hanging up without further discussion.
• Lots of social work schools and organizations
were opened although the development and
formulation of social work begun.
• Dr. Abraham Flexner spoke about theoretical and
rational knowledge against lack of especial
implementation of social work.
• And the national conference of Charities and
Corrections in 1915 A.D. gave birth to the
professionalism of social work.
• It emphasized case work and scientific method.
