My career goal
WHAT IS MY
PASSION?I love seeing people live a better life and I am passionate about helping them
achieve happiness in their daily life. I believe and hope that everything I design
will be recognized and used by many people. I started to be a volunteer when
I was 14 years old. When I was in college, I was helping autistic children every
single month. I created social stories through pictures for the children, and
taught them drawing at that time. It was a valuable experience for me, but also
became an inspiration for my thesis.

I want to work for Fuseproject, IDEO or LEGO in the future, because they have
a very broad product line. They bring stories through design and create new
experiences to improve the quality of people’s lives.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
04.Project Overview
Problem Statement
Hypothesis
Goal The current situation is stress can cause major illnesses .
In the stress report from American Psychological Association “Consistently high
stress could become a chronic condition, which can result in serious health
problems including anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure and
a weakened immune system. Research shows that stress can even contribute
to the development of major illnesses, such as heart disease, depression and
obesity, or exacerbate existing illnesses.”
Stress became a serious problem and the research shows 110 million people
die annually due to stress and 7 People Die from Stress Every 2 Seconds
In my previous research, 76% of people feel stress on the job. Psychosocial
stressors affect our daily lives and our social interactions. Work has become a
major source of stress. 48% of people think they need help in learning how to
manage stress. Majority of people in the remaining 52% relieve stress in an
unhealthy way. There is an opportunity that if we can provide a new healthy
option to these people.

PROBLEM
STATEMENTThe pace of life is increasingly fast today. Employees feel the stress in daily work.
However, living a stressful life will cause disease. But in the future, the pressures of
life cannot be avoided.
HYPOTHESISIf employees can find help to identify their stress levels, they can lift
themselves out of the fatigue zone/exhaustion zone, and keep themselves in
the improving zone/creative calm zone, so they can work more productively,
feel less stressed and have a better quality of life.

THE GOAL
OF THIS
PROJECT
A positive work environment allows employees to have a good working per-
formance, and this provides the motivation to sustain throughout the day. So
my goal is to design a product or a system of products, that can optimize stress
to enhance performance for the employees.

THE
RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN
STRESS LEVEL
AND PERFORMANCE
After observation, I discovered a diagram that emphasizes that stress is a pro-
cess of accumulation. It is also important to note that people have different
capacity to endure stress. When people reach their limit, they begin to real-
ize stress. After people realize stress, human performance begins to decline.
Therefore, in a healthy circulation, the human performance is constantly rotat-
ing between the improving zone and the fatigue zone. But if the stress is not
expressed in a timely way, it will cause health problems.

times she has to deal with the bad-tempered customers. The other thing is
she can’t have a good short time rest in the open plan office, so sometimes
she feels fatigue and no work efficiency. Her work environment is static,
no privacy and messy. She doesn’t get enough sleep when she works on

ABOUT
DESIGN
INTENTION
All of the existing products are working on the zone between the most stress-
ful point and exhaustion. My intention is working on the zone before people
already realize the stress, which means I want to keep them in the improving
zone/creative calm zone. In other words, I would like to design a product that
can measure and timely change the stressor by reducing the stress intake.

WHY
THIS INTENTION
IS ACHIEVABLE
The concept of “eustress”
According to my research, there is a thing called “eustress” which is a “good
stress”.
The definition from Wikipedia is “Eustress was originally explored in a stress
model by Richard Lazarus, it is the positive cognitive response to stress that
is healthy, or gives one a feeling of fulfilment or other positive feelings. Selye
created the term as a subgroup of stress to differentiate the wide variety of
stressors and manifestations of stress.”
From the above definition, eustress motivates you to continue working. It
means people are pushed, but don’t feel overwhelmed, and the same time
people have fun in the challenge.

ABOUT ME
Biography
Portfolio
“Imagination can change the world.” It is what I stick
to, and also what I am seeking. When I was in high school,
my parents gave me a mobile phone as a gift, which moti-
vated my interest in design. The personalized phone let me
realize that design can bring “a new life’ to a product. Upon
joining college, I chose industrial design as my undergrad-
uate major without hesitation.
Now I am an MFA student, studying at the Acade-
my of Art University. AAU provides us opportunities and
equipment to let us familiarize with the real working at-
mosphere for industrial design. I do believe that my edu-
cational experience and extracurricular activities have fully
prepared me to step into the future.
Because I am interested in electronic product de-
sign, I would like to work for a great company like Fusepro-
ject or IDEO. They are innovative and stylish. I am confident
that one day I can become an outstanding industrial de-
signer and create different kinds of unique products.

  • 4. 32 My passion My career goal WHAT IS MY PASSION?I love seeing people live a better life and I am passionate about helping them achieve happiness in their daily life. I believe and hope that everything I design will be recognized and used by many people. I started to be a volunteer when I was 14 years old. When I was in college, I was helping autistic children every single month. I created social stories through pictures for the children, and taught them drawing at that time. It was a valuable experience for me, but also became an inspiration for my thesis. My passion My career goal WHERE I WANT TO WORK? Fuseproject IDEO LEGO I want to work for Fuseproject, IDEO or LEGO in the future, because they have a very broad product line. They bring stories through design and create new experiences to improve the quality of people’s lives.
  • 5. 5 ABOUT THE PROJECT 04.Project Overview Problem Statement Hypothesis Goal The current situation is stress can cause major illnesses . In the stress report from American Psychological Association “Consistently high stress could become a chronic condition, which can result in serious health problems including anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system. Research shows that stress can even contribute to the development of major illnesses, such as heart disease, depression and obesity, or exacerbate existing illnesses.” Stress became a serious problem and the research shows 110 million people die annually due to stress and 7 People Die from Stress Every 2 Seconds In my previous research, 76% of people feel stress on the job. Psychosocial stressors affect our daily lives and our social interactions. Work has become a major source of stress. 48% of people think they need help in learning how to manage stress. Majority of people in the remaining 52% relieve stress in an unhealthy way. There is an opportunity that if we can provide a new healthy option to these people. PROJECT OVERVIEW Project Overview Problem Statement Hypothesis Goal
  • 6. 76 PROBLEM STATEMENTThe pace of life is increasingly fast today. Employees feel the stress in daily work. However, living a stressful life will cause disease. But in the future, the pressures of life cannot be avoided. HYPOTHESISIf employees can find help to identify their stress levels, they can lift themselves out of the fatigue zone/exhaustion zone, and keep themselves in the improving zone/creative calm zone, so they can work more productively, feel less stressed and have a better quality of life. Project Overview Problem Statement Hypothesis Goal THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT A positive work environment allows employees to have a good working per- formance, and this provides the motivation to sustain throughout the day. So my goal is to design a product or a system of products, that can optimize stress to enhance performance for the employees. Project Overview Problem Statement Hypothesis Goal

  • 10. 1514 Most stressful point Realize stress point THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRESS LEVEL AND PERFORMANCE After observation, I discovered a diagram that emphasizes that stress is a pro- cess of accumulation. It is also important to note that people have different capacity to endure stress. When people reach their limit, they begin to real- ize stress. After people realize stress, human performance begins to decline. Therefore, in a healthy circulation, the human performance is constantly rotat- ing between the improving zone and the fatigue zone. But if the stress is not expressed in a timely way, it will cause health problems. In other words, I would like to design a product that can measure and timely change the stressor by reducing the stress intake. Competitive Analysis User Environment Stakeholders Design Opportunity
  • 32. 5958 WHY THIS INTENTION IS ACHIEVABLE The concept of “eustress” According to my research, there is a thing called “eustress” which is a “good stress”. The definition from Wikipedia is “Eustress was originally explored in a stress model by Richard Lazarus, it is the positive cognitive response to stress that is healthy, or gives one a feeling of fulfilment or other positive feelings. Selye created the term as a subgroup of stress to differentiate the wide variety of stressors and manifestations of stress.” From the above definition, eustress motivates you to continue working. It means people are pushed, but don’t feel overwhelmed, and the same time people have fun in the challenge. • 90. ABOUT ME Biography Portfolio “Imagination can change the world.” It is what I stick to, and also what I am seeking. When I was in high school, my parents gave me a mobile phone as a gift, which moti- vated my interest in design. The personalized phone let me realize that design can bring “a new life’ to a product. Upon joining college, I chose industrial design as my undergrad- uate major without hesitation. Now I am an MFA student, studying at the Acade- my of Art University. AAU provides us opportunities and equipment to let us familiarize with the real working at- mosphere for industrial design. I do believe that my edu- cational experience and extracurricular activities have fully prepared me to step into the future. Because I am interested in electronic product de- sign, I would like to work for a great company like Fusepro- ject or IDEO. They are innovative and stylish. I am confident that one day I can become an outstanding industrial de- signer and create different kinds of unique products.
