Home Improvement Agency
“Helping to make people feel
warmer, safer and more secure in
their own home”
What is a
Home Improvement Agency?
• We help, advise and support people:
– who are over 60, or
– are disabled, or
– are on a low income
– who own their own home or live in privately
rented accommodation
• We help with home repairs, improvements
or adaptations.
What does the Agency do?
• We visit people and discuss any problems
they have with their home.
• We draw up a list of things that we can do
to help
• We help to arrange the money for any
work, e.g. grants or loans
• We arrange for builders or contractors to
carry out the work
How safe is your home?
• Let’s find out!
• It’s time to play…………

Editor's Notes

  1. For the Family Fortunes slides to look authentic you will need to install the “Repetition Scrolling” font. Go to control panel and select ‘Fonts’. From the File menu, choose ‘Install New Fonts’ and navigate to your family fortunes folder.
  2. Theme tune plays
  3. Highlights were people are most likely to fall. The most likely place of all is on the stairs
  4. Many people fall at the last step thinking they are already at the bottom of the stairs. This is sometimes due to poor lighting or impaired eyesight Accidents happen in other people’s houses (for example when visiting children) where surroundings are unfamiliar Carrying something often contributes, particularly on stairs Slippers are often loose and lead to a trip or stumble and then a fall Alcohol may contribute to many more falls where it is not mentioned People trip over all sorts of things including children and pets Other reasons include rushing to the toilet, not turning on the light at night and poor eyesight.
  5. Avoid reaching for things that are high up Or things that are low down Look out for things that can make you trip, like edges of carpets Trailing cables, or Loose mats and rugs Make sure you have handrails where you need them And that you were appropriate footwear Fit a letter cage so that you don’t have to bend down to pick up the post
  6. British Crime Survey statistics. Always fit locks with a British Standard kite mark – it may invalidate your insurance if you don’t Double glazing is much harder to break Never leave doors unlocked, or leave windows open when you got out Always ask for ID, and check if you’re unsure Never leave a key under a doormat Always use the security chain
  7. Figures are the percentage decrease in your chance of being burgled for each security measure that you have fitted. Make your house less appealing to a burglar. Timer lights make it look like your in, even if you’re out!
  8. Based on Home office figures for the sources of ignition of accidental dwelling fires Emphasise the need for smoke alarms – can be fitted free of charge
  9. The percentage of heat lost through each element of a typical house. Note that double glazing would not make that much of a contribution compared to other measures
  10. Based on £5 for a new low energy light bulb Based on £20 for a new hot water jacket Based on £300 for cavity wall insulation Based on £25 for a radiator panel – alternatively stick aluminium foil on corrugated cardboard Based on £250 for loft insulation Based on £100 for draught proofing – but will also increase comfort levels
  11. For the Family Fortunes slides to look authentic you will need to install the “Repetition Scrolling” font. Go to control panel and select ‘Fonts’. From the File menu, choose ‘Install New Fonts’ and navigate to your family fortunes folder.
