CORE LABORATORY ACTIVITIES
Knowledge from benches reading and culture for bacterial identification in particular
 SFC- Surface site cultures for bacterial and fungal investigation of swabs from superficial and
nonsurgical sites, for the diagnosis of infection.
 MRSA-Screening test is carried out to identify colonisation with Methicillin Resistant
Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in patients. Swabs taken from nose and other body surfaces
are screened for MRSA using selective and enrichment media.
 Urines-Urinary tract infections, bacterial identification from BD CHROMagar Orientation
medium.
 Faeces-Investigation of samples, mainly stools, for the detection and identification of a range
of ova, cysts, parasites, cells and abnormalities from enteric pathogens.
 PMC- Pus: Microscopy, Culture Bench for bacteriological investigation of tissue, fluid and
swabs from abscesses, deep seated sites and normally sterile fluids, to diagnose infection.
 STER- Bacteriological investigation of tissue, bone and joint fluid samples from prosthetic
and native joints for the diagnosis of infection. Specimens processed include
kidney/pancreatic perfusion fluids, donor bone graft samples and corneal donor grafts.
 GENC- Genital cultures for bacteriological, fungal and parasitic investigation of male and
female genital specimens for the diagnosis of genital and sexually transmitted infection.
 Mycology: Dermatophytes for isolation and identification of dermatophytes in human
epidermal tissue, usually skin, nail or hair.
CULTURES, MANUAL TESTS
Processing the vast majority of the clinical specimen received in microbiology department including
category 3 microorganisms such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella typhi (one year of
experience in containment level 3 laboratories). Perform all manual test within the microbiology and
serology such as ASOT, Binax NOW Legionella Urinary Antigen rapid test, Brucelloslide test,
Cryptococcal Ag test, Binax NOW RSV rapid test for Respiratory Syncytial Virus, API’s, Group Testing
Kits, and Staph Latex Kits.
MICROSCOPIES
 Acridine orange: Pus cells, Yeasts, Clue cells, and Trichomonas identification.
 Gram stain: Pus Cells, Yeasts, and bacterial identification depending on their Gram
morphology.
