Ferhad and Shirin
King of Persia Khosro married a beautiful Princess Shirin. Farhad was an eminent
sculptor, whose passionate love for the same maiden gave the monarch vexation. To remove him
from his court, King required him to hew a channel for a river through the lofty mountain,
Bisotoun, and to decorate it with sculpture. He promised also that if Farhad would accomplish
this stupendous task, he would receive as his bride the object of his love. The enamored artist
accepted the work on his condition. It is related that as he struck the rock, he constantly invoked
the name of Shirin.

6. Celtic Legend
King Arthur
Arthur was the first born son of King Uther Pendragon and heir to the throne. However these
were very troubled times and Merlin, a wise magician, advised that the baby Arthur should be raised
in a secret place and that none should know his true identity.
As Merlin feared conflict over who should be the next king. Merlin used his magic to set a sword
names Excalibur in a stone. Written on the sword, in letters of gold, were these words: "Who so ever
pulls out this sword of this stone is the right wise born king of all England." Of course all the
contenders for the throne took their turn at trying to draw the sword, but none could succeed. Arthur
withdrew the sword for another to use in a tournament. Following this he became King.

7. African Tale
Kirikou and the Sorceress
In a little village somewhere in Africa, a boy named Kirikou is born in a spectacular
way. But he can speak and walk immediately after being born. His mother tells him that
Karaba the sorceress has dried up their spring and devoured all the males of the village
except for one. The tiny Kirikou decides to accompany the last warrior to visit the
sorceress. Kirikou tricks Karaba and saves his uncle. Then, he bursts the monster
who was drinking all the village's water. Then kirikou went to his grandfather who tells
him that the sorceress is evil because she suffers: bad men put a poisoned thorn in her
back. Kirikou manages to trick the sorceress and removes the thorn. The sorceress is
cured. She kisses Kirikou and he becomes an adult. Love reigns.

Hansel and Gretel
Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor wood cutter. Fearing starvation, the
children's step-mother convinces the father to lead the children into the forest, and
abandon them there. Lost in the forest, the children find a house made of bread, with
sugar windows, which they begin to eat. But the house belonged to a witch. She caged
Hansel, and makes Gretel her servant. While she prepares to cook Hansel, she tells
Gretel to climb into an oven to be sure it is ready to bake; but Gretel guesses that the
witch intends to bake her, and tricks the witch into climbing into the oven, closing it
behind her and they escaped with all the witch treasure.

The snake Prince
A poor woman found a poisonous snake in her pot. When she opened the pot, she found a
rich necklace. She sold it to the king, but when he opened it, he found a baby boy. He and the
queen raised it as their son and he became Prince. Then the young prince got married with a
Princess who refused to speak until he told her about his origin secret. When he told her the
story, that he was prince from far off who had been turned into a snake, he became a snake
again. The snake came to her and said “if you put bowls of milk and sugar in the four corners
of the room, snakes would come, led by the Queen of the Snakes and if you stand in her way,
you could ask for me, but if you are frightened and did not, you could not have me back”. The
princess did as he said, and won back her husband.
