with Grammar Cube

Hi, my name is Nick and I am English language teacher, inventor of 2D and 3D
organizers for English verbal grammar and developer of “English in 3D” ESL
teaching technology
Today I will tell you how you can use my resources to achieve more on your
grammar lessons by actually doing less.
1 band = ~ 150-200 hours
IELTS 1.0 →IELTS 5.0 = 500-800 hours
When students come to me and tell “Our goal is speaking good English”, my first
question is - define “good speaking”
IELTS 1.0 →IELTS 5.0 = 80-120 hours
Language learning is all about memory.
Any computer engineer knows that memory is like money.
No matter how much you have - it is never enough
Rule #1 - range your input and focus on the most important
Verb is a power-core of any language and its most complex and important part.
English has numerous verbal forms and tenses
GRAMMAR PUZZLE
Tenses are pieces of a big grammar puzzle.
What MAY look like a nice picture of studying, in fact
is a helpless effort of a desperate student trying to
sort out a mess while being totally blind in a complete
darkness.

My first Grammar Organizer (GO) was 2D.

Soon I understood that having only tenses is not enough and I need more. So,
I added infinitives, modals and built a separate interactive table for the verb TO
BE

Following is an example of using GO for teaching grammar
1. Tom lives in a small town.
2. He doesn't like to go to school.
3. He likes to play and to have fun.
4. One day he was playing in a backyard
5. He found a shiny pearl there.
6. He could have shown it to his parents but he didn′t.
7. He gave it to his little sister.
8. He knew that she could be trusted with any secret.
This is a sample text. Using it I will show what I do on my
lessons to help my students.

I give my students a task to color verbal parts of sentences. It adds an
“augmented reality” layer to the text and shows what students actually see.
Quite often it is very different from you might expect as a teacher.

Next level - building questions to yellow and blue parts. Each mistake should
be corrected by using interactive tables of the Grammar Organizer. Better if
students do it themselves.

Where does he live?
When students navigate tables - they learn much faster. Switching focus from
teacher’s personality to interactive tables decreases teaching burden and
increases learning efficiency

In general, an idea with interactive tables was a success. However,
some students complained about “TOO MANY TABLES”.

WHY STUDENTS HATE GRAMMAR
One the main reasons why students hate
grammar is because it is being taught already
killed, dissected and dead.
Imagine that you have never seen a dog. You
come to school and you have to learn it by
studying its dead pieces (muscles, nerves,
bones etc.).
But you never have a chance to see the dog as a
whole and alive!
Would you enjoy it?

The cube works as a projector of
student's thinking. Student reads a text
and shows grammar structures on the
cube. It boosts high-precision grammar
speaking and understanding.

  • 2. Hi, my name is Nick and I am English language teacher, inventor of 2D and 3D organizers for English verbal grammar and developer of “English in 3D” ESL teaching technology Today I will tell you how you can use my resources to achieve more on your grammar lessons by actually doing less.
  • 3. 1 band = ~ 150-200 hours IELTS 1.0 →IELTS 5.0 = 500-800 hours When students come to me and tell “Our goal is speaking good English”, my first question is - define “good speaking”
  • 4. IELTS 1.0 →IELTS 5.0 = 80-120 hours
  • 5. Language learning is all about memory. Any computer engineer knows that memory is like money. No matter how much you have - it is never enough
  • 6. Rule #1 - range your input and focus on the most important Verb is a power-core of any language and its most complex and important part. English has numerous verbal forms and tenses
  • 7. GRAMMAR PUZZLE Tenses are pieces of a big grammar puzzle. What MAY look like a nice picture of studying, in fact is a helpless effort of a desperate student trying to sort out a mess while being totally blind in a complete darkness.

He could have shown it to his parents but he didn′t. 7. He gave it to his little sister. 8. He knew that she could be trusted with any secret. This is a sample text. Using it I will show what I do on my lessons to help my students. COLOR-CODING ACTIVITY

Tenses Infinitives Modals I give my students a task to color verbal parts of sentences. It adds an “augmented reality” layer to the text and shows what students actually see. Quite often it is very different from you might expect as a teacher. COLOR-CODING ACTIVITY

Tenses Infinitives Modals Next level - building questions to yellow and blue parts. Each mistake should be corrected by using interactive tables of the Grammar Organizer. Better if students do it themselves. COLOR-CODING ACTIVITY Where does he live?
  • 15. When students navigate tables - they learn much faster. Switching focus from teacher’s personality to interactive tables decreases teaching burden and increases learning efficiency COLOR-CODING ACTIVITY
  • 16. In general, an idea with interactive tables was a success. However, some students complained about “TOO MANY TABLES”.

  • 23. WHY STUDENTS HATE GRAMMAR One the main reasons why students hate grammar is because it is being taught already killed, dissected and dead. Imagine that you have never seen a dog. You come to school and you have to learn it by studying its dead pieces (muscles, nerves, bones etc.). But you never have a chance to see the dog as a whole and alive! Would you enjoy it?

  • 25. The cube works as a projector of student's thinking. Student reads a text and shows grammar structures on the cube.
