An Argumentative Essay

An Argumentative Essay has the following structure:

   1. Introductory paragraph;

   2. Developmental paragraphs;

   3. Concluding paragraph.

The essay begins with an introductory paragraph which tells the reader what the essay is about.
The body of an essay is made up of paragraphs that support the introduction, and the concluding
paragraph completes the essay.

An Introductory paragraph would include:

   a. The first sentence is a topic sentence which introduces the general topic of the essay.

   b. The second sentence narrows the topic to certain details or characteristics.

   c. The third sentence restates the topic in simpler words.

   d. The fourth sentence is the thesis statement. It gives the controlling idea of the essay.

The topic sentence indicates what is being discussed or described. The sentence with the
controlling idea tells us how the topic is approached.

The supporting paragraphs back up the controlling idea of problems identified in the
introduction. They all begin with a topic sentence and discuss various aspects of the given
problem in turn, state the author’s opinion and/ or add details for each aspect of the problem.

The structure of a developmental paragraph is:

   1. The topic sentence;

   2. Sentences developing the topic sentence of the paragraph;

   3. Concluding sentence.

To make a more fully developed paragraph, one needs to add details to his/her supporting ideas.
The details can be in the form of: facts, examples, personal experiences, or descriptions.

The body of an essay should consist of at least two developmental paragraphs. Each
developmental paragraph should have a topic sentence that supports the controlling idea
mentioned in the thesis statement of the introduction. All the ideas in each paragraph should
support their topic sentence.

The sentences in the concluding paragraph will:

   1. Restate the thesis statement;

   2. Restate the topic sentences from the developmental paragraphs;

   3. State the author’s opinion or preferences, make a prediction, or give a solution;
4. Conclude with a statement that sums up the essay.

The first sentence is a topic sentence which introduces the general topic of the essay. b. The second sentence narrows the topic to certain details or characteristics. c. The third sentence restates the topic in simpler words. d. The fourth sentence is the thesis statement. It gives the controlling idea of the essay. The topic sentence indicates what is being discussed or described. The sentence with the controlling idea tells us how the topic is approached. The supporting paragraphs back up the controlling idea of problems identified in the introduction. They all begin with a topic sentence and discuss various aspects of the given problem in turn, state the author’s opinion and/ or add details for each aspect of the problem. The structure of a developmental paragraph is: 1. The topic sentence; 2. Sentences developing the topic sentence of the paragraph; 3. Concluding sentence. To make a more fully developed paragraph, one needs to add details to his/her supporting ideas. The details can be in the form of: facts, examples, personal experiences, or descriptions. The body of an essay should consist of at least two developmental paragraphs. Each developmental paragraph should have a topic sentence that supports the controlling idea mentioned in the thesis statement of the introduction. All the ideas in each paragraph should support their topic sentence. The sentences in the concluding paragraph will: 1. Restate the thesis statement; 2. Restate the topic sentences from the developmental paragraphs; 3. State the author’s opinion or preferences, make a prediction, or give a solution;
