AS A MATERIAL FOR FOOD PACKAGING

3. GENERAL FUNCTIONS OF PACKAGING
MATERIALS
• Every packaging material has several basic
functions, although they contain similar
structure.
• Fundamentally these functions are
containment, protection, preservation,
convenience and information.(Food
Packaging theseus(Helsinki Metropolia
University of Applied Science))
• Paper as a packaging material serves all
these purpose.
4. WHAT IS A PAPER?
• Paper is a thin material
produced by pressing
together moist fibres of
cellulose pulp derived from
wood,rags or grasses and
drying them into flexible
sheets (wikipedia.org)
5. GENERAL USAGE :
• For writting in schools
• Printing books and documents
• For packaging (food,cloths,etc)
• Cleaning
• Making books
(wikipedia.org)
6. HISTORY OF THE INVENTION OF PAPER:
• The invention and usage of paper dates back to the 2nd century BCE in
China.
• It is known that by the 13th century it had spread to the western
world.
• From 17th century, due to industrialization, the cost of producing
paper in large mass had reduced; these paved way for it being used
for food packaging.
• Thanks to industrialization,it was possible to modify it into different
types for food production and packaging; it was possible to make
corrugated boxes,wrapping paper,bags and sacks,folding cartons and
etc for food packaging.( wikipedia.org)
7. TYPES OF PAPER:
There are many types of paper products for food packaging:
1. Kraft Paper
2. Sulfite Paper
3. Greaseproof paper
4. Glassine
5. Parchment paper
8. KRAFT PAPER
• Kraft paper is produced from chemical pulp like sulfite.
• It is used for packaging flour, dried fruits, vegetables
etc.
• It is very strong than all other papers.
9. SULFITE PAPER :
• Lighter than kraft paper.
• It is made from pulp.
• Used for making wrappers for biscuits and
small bags for carrying groceries.
10. GREASEPROOF PAPER:
• It is impermeable to oil and grease, making it suitable for
food packaging.
• It is made by refining the paper to create a sheet with very
low porosity.
• It is used to package snack foods, cookies, candies and oily
foods
11. GLASSINE:
• Glassine is very smooth and glossy paper that is
air,water,and grease resistance.
• It is very tough .
• It does not allow air to pass through easily.
• It have translucent appearance .
• It is used in packaging meat, meat products, oily plant
products,baked food and fatty product.
12. PARCHMENT PAPER:
• Made of cellulose and sulfite acid.
• It is heat resistant.
• It is used mostly for bakery and fats products like butter.
13. SUITABILITY FOR FOOD PACKAGING:
Paper have high suitabilty for food packaging due to the following properties:
• It can easily be printed on.
• Cheap to produce for packaging food.
• It is biodegrable.
• It can be recycled.
• Can be moulded into different shapes and sizes.
• It can be coated .
• It is lightweight.
• It can offer protection for crops that needs a little airspace
• This properties makes it very suitable for packaging various kinds of food
products such as fruits ,vegetables and ground grains.
14. THE BAD SIDE:
Despite it having abilty to prevent air flow, it also has some
disadvantages we want to look at. They are:
• Paper have very poor water resistant ;unless well treated.
• It can easily get damaged.
• Easy to burn/ It is highly flammable.
• It has weak sealing.
• It releases water vapour in the package(transpiration)
• It is sensitive to moisture
• Has weak mechanical resistance (susceptible to mechanical
injury)
15. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS:
• The need for more paper production has increased
deforestation.
• It have negative contribution to the ozone layer depletion by
depositing certain chemicals used in its manucturing such
as Chlorinated dioxins in the ozone layer and also on human
health through food that have been packaged with these
paper products.(Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic
Pollutants).
• Also one overlooked problem is waste that it creates after
consumers have finished the product inside the package.
