OpenStreetMap is a community-driven project to create a free and editable map of the world. It relies on local volunteers to gather mapping data through surveys of their areas, which captures details that change frequently. Mappers add this new information as well as import data from other open databases, though quality issues must sometimes be addressed, and licenses verified. While there is still work to be done, the collaborative process has proven effective at continuously improving and expanding the map.
