What technology to use in this case?
There is a multitude of asset tracking technologies that you can consider
and combine to fit this use case, each with its own benefits and
weaknesses. For example:
- GPS: great for tracking over long distances; very expensive if you
need to have GPS in every single vehicle; lacks precision, so it would
not help a worker too much in the large parking lot.
- Passive RFID: very cheap asset tags (commonly used in RFID access
cards); very expensive reader infrastructure; the driver would need to
manually scan the tag on a reader to update the vehicle location when
parking it, so that someone else can find it later.
- Active RFID: no need for manual location update and thus better than
passive RFID in our case; your reader infrastructure would still be
expensive, your asset tags even more.
- Barcodes: very cheap & widely used asset tags; need manual location
update and dedicated reader infrastructure.

How about Bluetooth beacons?
Precise locating
With beacons you can get to 5m accuracy both indoor and outdoor
(depending on your budget and environment). GPS typical accuracy is
15m outdoor and much worse indoors.
Cost-effective
With prices of $25-30, beacons cost as much as active RFID tags, but
need no expensive readers.
No dedicated readers
By installing an mobile app on the phone of the worker, you turn it into a
reader and save $1,000-8,000/reader that you’d normally need to spend if
you go with active RFID.

Unlike passive RFID and barcodes, your workers don’t need to scan
manually a tag to update an asset’s location. Their mobile devices do this
automatically when they get in the proximity beacons attached to the

Automatic scan & position update
Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), asset location is crowdsourced from
your team’s mobile devices as they move around. No manual inputs &
scanning.
Offline & real-time mode
You get real-time updates out of the box. However, if you have no internet
connection, asset location data your device collected is updated as soon
as you have internet.

How it works: the hardware
1. Asset beacons
Each asset you want to track needs a beacon to signal its
location to nearby devices. You can choose between two
beacon sizes & stick, stitch or screw it on the surface of the
asset or place it in its container.
2. Zone beacons
To detect your assets, you also need a grid of zone
beacons (same device, different purpose). Those are
placed on walls & ceilings of your premises, powered by
power plug or battery. For high precision RTLS, you will
need a dense grid and for a point-of-interest based system,
several beacons can be installed at key locations.

How it works: the software

Search for the asset you need and immediately see its
location on your floor plan. As you and your staff move
within your premises (or assets pass by a mobile device
at a key location), the app automatically detects all the
beacons around and reports their locations to the cloud.
