4. The plans: progress to date
•on-site testing in a local authority area was positive- these
inspections have the potential to really add value
•a full pilot inspection is planned for November/December
•consultation responses generally positive but strong
interest in having other ‘deep dive areas’ and concerns
about burden of inspection
•launch in January. Likely to complete up to three
inspections before the end of the financial year
•inspectorates potentially resourced for a maximum of one
joint inspection per month alongside their own inspection

• first six inspections looking at child sexual exploitation
and missing from home, care and education
• flexible inspection model
• potential to have a rolling programme of ‘deep dives’ in
areas where we can add value through shared scrutiny,
e.g.
 those receiving early help
 those living with domestic abuse
 older children at risk
 children at risk of intra-familial sexual abuse
 child neglect
 girls at risk of female genital mutilation

reporting

•aggregated thematic report about the ‘deep dive’ aspect
•the ‘deep dive’ can reflect the interests of the sector,
government, the public and the inspectorates- where we
want to share learning and disseminate good practice.

resource widely and wisely
•all the inspectorates are challenged by spending review
targets
•embedding the welfare and protection of children and
young people across all of our single inspection remits is a
priority for each of us
•each of us has priorities relating to children and young
people that are not captured by a joint inspection
programme
